I’d say the real damage of “virtue-signaling” comes when people believe that voting in a presidential election genuinely determines their moral alignment.

rings of power has cured my impostor syndrome because how is ‘the most expensive show ever made’ written at a 4th grade reading level, directed by people who still think blood splattering the camera is le epic, and costumed by hallmark channel dropouts
there are few shows i’ve seen where i’m like wow this has literally nothing going for it- rings of power is one of them. it’s not for tolkien fans, as the lore is so rewritten that its unrecognizable. it’s not for high fantasy fans as all the fantasy elements and plotting are extremely stupid and badly done and the costumes are visibly from shein. it’s not even for the basic general audience as its boring as fuck with paper thin characters. who the hell was this made for 😭

I feel like if you are in the Tolkien fandom and make AI fanart to his works, especially Silmarillion, you are massively missing the point and should go back to the source text

I think something people get fundamentally wrong about the AI art issue is that they think artists hate AI art because they don't consider it art, when it was never really about this aspect as art is completely subjective. The problem with AI art is that it steals the hard work of artists. That it exists and is able to create something decent only because there are artists out there who share their work with pride, only for a bot to take pieces of what they make, simply rip off the visual effects and textures they spent years perfecting, and generate a random prompt for That Guy who thinks artists asking for money are bonkers. It doesn't matter if it's pretty or surreal in a cool way, it is stealing the labor of artists who struggle every day to earn the bare minimum to survive.

the thing about goncharov mania that gets me is that this used to be a common occurrence. I remember when I first got s tumblr almost a decade ago now and there was a new big meme every week and a half to 2 weeks. People used to do meme compilations at the end of the year for each month on a timeline and sometimes it seemed like ages ago other times it felt like only a day since you'd seen something last. I dunno what happened to it, that constant stupid fun, but I miss it. And goncharov has been the closest we've gotten to it in a while.

Tumblr is generating foot traffic for the first time in years (which is good and nice) but I am at a loss on what should I be posting. Back in the day I mostly did Tolkien and silmarillion content and since then I had to grow out of the fandom. Would anyone be interested in my little boring personal work?
