===================================
Leo
• It wasn’t that Leo thought you didn’t like him as he was. He was just trying to relate to you since you had so many human friends.
• When you two were hanging out, you’d often get a message on your phone from one of your friends asking if you can hang out. More often than not, you would leave the lair to meet them, leaving Leo to think about solutions to make you more comfortable.
• Okay, maybe he was a little insecure about being a mutant rather than a human.
• When you saw him in the cloaking brooch, your first reaction was to laugh out loud.
• “Aw, Lee…!” You said in between laughs. “You look so weird.”
• Leo felt a pang of annoyance as he jumped through hoops to get a cloaking brooch and may have the Hidden City police after him.
• “C’mon, don’t this rugged good looks translate well in my human form?”
• You giggled as you neared him and gently took the brooch off of his chest, Leo turning back to the lovable turtle he was.
• “I like you just the way you are, babe. Green skin, bald head and all.”
• Leo scoffed but hugged you tightly, lifting you off your feet and twirling around.
~~~~~~~~~~
Raph
• We all know that the red clad turtle is big. Like, really big. And spiky.
• You’d cut yourself on his spikes before and he always profusely apologized even though you were never mad at him.
• So one day, he thought to try out a cloaking brooch to see if he could reduce his spikes and size.
• It definitely reduced his spikes, but not his size.
• When you saw him, you loved it before he told you why he’d done it.
• “Raph, you don’t have to do that.”
• “But I keep hurting you and—”
• You grabbed his face and pulled him down to your own visage, taking the cloaking brooch off.
• “I love every part of you. Spikes and all.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mikey
• When Mikey put on the cloaking brooch, you loved the way his human form looked. Like, you’d obsessively ask him if he could put it on.
• After a while, Mikey grew to assume that you only liked him with the brooch on.
• He started to wear it more and more before you would even ask him.
• Eventually, you grew suspicious. It seemed like he would rush to get the brooch whenever you’d come into the lair.
• “Mike, you know you don’t have to wear the brooch every time I’m here, right?”
• Mikey was slightly embarrassed. “I know…! I just thought you liked it more than… my other form.”
• “No, Mikey,” you took the brooch off of his chest, turning him back into a mutant, “I love your human form. But I love your mutant form even more.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Donnie
• Donnie was always insecure about your relationship. When he’d first met you, he had a cloaking brooch on, so he appeared human.
• It was only after the first date he revealed that he was a mutant.
• You didn’t care about his appearance and he was still hot anyways, but he would often put the brooch on when you two would hang out.
• One day, you thought it was a good idea to remind him again. When you arrived in his lab, he was working on another great invention. When he saw you, he quickly reached for the brooch, but you approached even faster.
• You placed a hand on the brooch and gazed up at him. “Y’know you don’t need to wear that, right?”
• He somewhat avoided your stare. “I know. I just…”
• “Donnie,” your hand went up from his hand to his bicep and you gave it a gentle squeeze, “I’ve told you already that I love you just as much as I love your human form.”
• “I know, but… you’re human. You’re used to humans. So why not look like one to make you more comfortable?”
• You sighed as you cupped his cheek. “You already make me feel comfortable, Dee.”
This sounds so funny lol
I’m going to assume you wanted fem pronouns bc of how you refer to the reader
No Take-Backs
Rise!Leo X Fem!Reader
Prompt: Leo tries to propose to you, but you couldn’t be more oblivious.
Pronouns: Feminine (she/her)
Timeline: Post!Movie (18)
Warnings ⚠️: Underaged drinking, slight angst, mild language
===================================
Leo took a deep shaky breath as he stared down at the small velvet box he’d uncovered in the top drawer of his nightstand.
He was gonna do it.
He was going to finally propose to you like he’d promised all those years ago. Well, it wasn’t actually that long ago. More like four years ago when you and him were both fourteen.
It was more of a joke at first: Leo would flirt with you incessantly, occasionally quipping some pun about the inevitability of receiving your hand in marriage. You’d teased him one time saying that you two would tie the knot at age eighteen. Little did you know how seriously he took it.
Leo remembered the chills that ran down his spine when you’d said that. Chills mixed with the loud thump of his own heart pounding in his ears:
“If it keeps you quiet, we’ll get married when we’re eighteen. Okay?”
She hadn’t said it in the traditional sense, and maybe (Y/N) was just joking with him—hence the beginning of the sentence—but he’d rather ask for forgiveness than permission… if that’s the right analogy.
No matter how many times Leo told himself to take a deep breath and relax, the turtle couldn’t stop thinking about the worst possible outcomes of this particular scenario. Now he was sure that you two loved each other and he wanted to finally let you know how serious he was about you, but what if you were actually just joking?
You were it for him, he knew that. For the blue clad turtle, there wasn’t anything or anybody else he’d want to spend the rest of his life with besides you. It wasn’t like he could just find somebody else unless there’s some sort of mutant dating app. And who can guarantee that they’ll look as beautiful as him? This wasn’t to say that you were as good as he could get. In fact, he never failed to admirably address your visage whether you’d just gotten ready to go out or rolled out of bed at 1PM. Leo always called you beautiful and he always meant it.
Not just your looks, but you always made him laugh. And—it’s kinda shallow but he can’t help his feelings—fed his ego through your relentless compliments whenever he did something to better himself, or maybe just when you’re feeling especially grateful for him. God, did had he hoped his ego would’ve somewhat left him once he became an adult. But alas, he still couldn’t resist hearing a “you’re my champion” breeze past your soft, upturned lips once in a while.
You calling his name caused Leo to fumble the velvet box before hurriedly stuffing it into the corner of the drawer and shutting it as quietly as possible. “Y-yeah, babe?” He stuttered out.
“Come here, I need your help.”
For the last few hours, you and Leo had been moving into your own apartment away from his cockblocking brothers and Splinter. He was proud of himself: being the first in the family to move out at a reasonable age and have a long term girlfriend? This was something you only saw in movies.
The blue turtle—who’d actually forgone his bandanna today. He totally didn’t lose it in the move already—slowly made his way into the kitchen where (Y/N)‘s voice was coming from. You’d been placing sets of dishes into the cupboard, but you and him were both minimalists so you only had two of everything. Two plates, two forks, two spoons, two knives. The only thing you didn’t have two of were the napkins, but that was obvious enough.
You held a plate up to your face and feigned thoughtfulness. “Did you want yours in the left cabinet… or the right one?”
Leo chuckled, gently taking the plate from your hand. “Now that we’re moving in, everything is ours. Our house. Our plates. Our toothbrushes.”
With an eye roll, you stepped aside, urging him to pick his side. The turtle scratched his chin feigning contemplation before claiming the right cabinet. He took a step back, resting his hands on his hips contently.
You giggled as you turned to him and wrapped your arms around his neck. “I can’t wait to start living with you. It feels like we were just dating a few days ago and now we have an apartment together.”
The time did seem to fly for Leo as well. You and him started dating when you were both about fourteen and have been inseparable since.
Now he was going to marry you.
He placed his hands on your waist, gently swaying the both of you with an iconic sly smile on his face. “Oh, yeah. You knew you’d be in this forever, right? No take-backs.”
With an enamored sigh, you gently pressed your lips against his snout. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”
• • •
A month passed and Leo still hadn’t worked up the courage to propose. There’d been a constant whining voice in the back of his head telling him that this wasn’t a good idea.
Your words a month prior had him thinking that you weren’t ready to get married yet. If you felt like you two had just started dating, would you really want to get married so soon after moving in together?
But everything else told him to marry you. He wanted to have you as his forever. The memory of the two of you meeting, going on your first date, and having your first kiss played on repeat in his mind. All those moments meant so much to him. If he ever had children, he would recite them to them all the time; every chance he got.
One night, though, he thought was as good as any to try his luck.
You and him were sitting on the rooftop of your apartment building eating Chinese and drinking out of Coke bottles that may or may not be filled about half way with liquor. Leo quickly realized that alcohol mixed with emotions wouldn’t be ideal when proposing, but maybe it would boost his confidence if anything.
You’d been talking about your college courses and how tiring it’s been.
“I feel like a zombie sometimes: just doing things on autopilot. Everything’s more of an instinct than something I wanna do, y’know?” You took a swig of the spiked drink, sighing deeply afterwards. “Like, I go to school to be something more than what I am now but… I duwanna be a mindless slave to the economy. Y’know?”
The turtle in fact didn’t know what you meant. He’d never had to worry about school or college or the economy besides the rent for the apartment.
Leo shrugged. “Yeah, I can see that. I’m glad I don’t have to worry that much about school and stuff like that. Sounds stressful.”
You slowly nodded, the alcohol suppressing your reaction time. “Yeah, it is. But it’ll be worth it, I think.”
They sat in silence for a couple seconds, car horns blaring from down below. The chilly night breeze toyed with your hair, and Leo couldn’t help but admire you tucking the strands behind your ear before taking a bite of your orange chicken.
A question soon entered Leo’s mind and he thought it would be harmless to ask. “So, like… do you think we could… be more?”
That came out awful. He didn’t mean to stutter so much.
You cocked an eyebrow at him, chuckling. “Be more? What more could we be?”
Leo laughed awkwardly. “I dunno, like… what comes after two people move in together? We just exist together like an old couple?”
“Well, old couples are usually married so…” your words trailed off as you began to connect the dots. With a smirk, you slid closer to your boyfriend. “Ohh, you wanna marry me?”
The lump in Leo’s throat only grew in size, causing him to clear it out. “I mean—well—yeah, but eventually! Not like, now or super soon or anything.”
How smooth.
With an obnoxious laugh, you pressed your head against his shoulder. “You’re so cute. But I don’t think you want to marry me.”
This was something that the blue clad turtle didn’t really understand. How could he not want to marry someone as amazing as you? You always make him laugh, you’re fun to talk to; to have around, you understood him in a way he felt no one else could. Who wouldn’t want to be with you?
“Why’s that?” He asked.
You hummed in thought. “I dunno. I just feel like I’m not someone anyone would want to marry. I’m the girl people have fun with for a few months or years and then never see the rest of your life. My existence in people’s lives is very temporary.”
If you only knew how much that both hurt and concerned him. “No way. Not for me.” Leo unhurriedly reached for the ring in his pocket, the velvet texture of the box soothing his anxiety. “We’re locked down, remember? No take-backs.”
Somewhat of a tension filled the air the second he finished his sentence. You seemed upset—no, conflicted at what he’d said. The turtle began to say something else, but you quickly hopped to your feet with the Coke bottle in your hand. You pressed it to your lips, chugging it down until it was empty. Returning your vision to your boyfriend, you held out your hand to him and forced a smile.
“Dance with me?”
• • •
The next day, you were sort of hungover. Leo was the first to get out of bed to get you a glass of water and make breakfast for the both of you.
Your behavior last night almost diminished his hopes on proposing to you. Maybe it was best to wait a few years before even attempting if you already felt like you wouldn’t be a good partner in marriage. But the voice and the memories kept playing in his mind over and over again. It was as if it was his destiny to make you his. And soon. Very soon.
He tried again a week or so after the first time. You two were sitting on the fire escape talking and he felt like it was the time, but when he was down on his knee, you through your arms around him laughing and snorting in your drunken state. College had been kicking your ass and you hadn’t smiled often since his first attempt, so as to not ruin the moment, he bailed.
The next time, Leo had his brothers help him. But that was fruitless as well when you had to finish an essay, so you both turned in early into the night.
It became a battle to get you one, alone and away from your laptop, and two, to catch you in a good enough mood. Two months passed and Leo still hadn’t proposed, but you had just finished your midterms and were off for the next few weeks. He thought it was the perfect time to test his luck.
Friday night, he coerced his older brother to help him out. Snow had settled on the ground the day prior and he knew you loved the winter more than anything.
Later that night, your boyfriend basically yanked you to the frigid outdoors to the park. The two of you walked down the trail for a few minutes before you grew bored.
“Leo, where are we going?” You somewhat whined. “I love the cold but I’m freezing my ass off here.”
The turtle scoffed as to feign offense. “I’m taking you all this way and you’re complaining? I’m hurt, (Y/N).”
You chuckled lightly as you leaned against him. “It better be good or else you’ll find all your stuff in boxes when we get back.”
After a few more minutes, Leo demanded you to close your eyes and he would guide you the rest of the way. His heart thumped in his chest the closer they came to his surprise. You had to say yes. You just had to. The time and effort he put into this paired with his undying love for you had to be enough.
Soon, the two of you reached your destination.
“Okay, you can open your eyes now.” Leo said as he ran in front of you and threw his hands into the air once you complied.
Before you was a white archway littered with blue faux flowers. There was a badly painted off-white picnic table to the side of it with a candle that seemed to be once lit in the center of it. The spread was rookie and maybe not the best setting for the winter but sentimental nonetheless.
“Surprise!” Your boyfriend exclaimed with a laugh.
“Aw, Leo, you’re so sweet.” He grabbed your hand and led you to the picnic table. “Did you do this all yourself?”
He chuckled nervously. “Well, Raph did help me a bit. But it was my idea.”
You playfully rolled your eyes at him as he sat across from you. The look in his eyes was different than usual. His eyes constantly darted around as if he was waiting for something. When he would make eye contact with you, you could tell that he was anxious.
“Are you alright, babe?” You placed your hand on his. “You seem... nervous.”
The blue clad turtle waved his hand as to nullify your concerns. “No, no, I’m fine. Just great, but, uhm… I have something to ask you—er, tell you...? Ask and tell, I guess.”
You raised an eyebrow waiting for him to continue. Ever so slowly, he took your hand in his and led you to the arch. Underneath, he held your other hand and took a deep breath.
“For, like, the last few months, I’ve been trying to do this but… anyways, I just wanted to tell you how much I care about you. From the time we first met to now, I’ve always loved you.”
You cooed. “Aw, Lee. I love you too.”
He chuckled before he continued. “I love your personality and your laugh and the fact that you still organize our two plates the same way.”
“Well how else am I supposed to put them? Yours is right, mine is left.” You chimed in.
Leo gazed into your eyes, a small smile appearing on his face. “You complete me, babe. You’re the only person I’ve met that truly understands me. You’re someone I can always go to with anything, and I want you to be in my life forever.”
The turtle slowly got down on one knee and retrieved the velvet box from his pocket. Your hands shot up to you mouth as you realized what he was about to do. He held the box out in front of him and opened it to reveal a ring with morganite crystals within it.
“So, uh,” he mentally slapped himself for stuttering again, “So… I just wanted to ask… will you marry me, (Y/N)?”
Tears pricked your eyes as you began to sniffle from the cold and from the heartfelt proposal. “Is this why you asked me about it? Being more?”
Leo nodded. “Just like we’d promised.”
It took you a moment to understand what he’d meant until you remembered the memory he was talking about. “Oh my god, Leo, you still remember that? God, you’re so cute. But… are you sure? Like, really sure? You want to get… married to me?”
“I’ve never wanted anything more.” Leo said simply, an almost stern look on his face.
You couldn’t believe what was happening. When you had talked to him about no one wanting to marry you, you’d assumed that your relationship was temporary and Leo saying you two were “locked in” was only to make you feel better about the inevitable end. He wanted you. Forever.
“I… yes, Leo, I will marry you!” You exclaimed as you threw yourself at him, knocking both of you onto the snow.
For the first time in months, Leo took a deep breath and exhaled into your hair. He’d done it. He’d finally done it. His lover, his best friend, was finally his.
“No take-backs?” You piped up as you glanced up at him, an amused smirk on your face.
Your boyfriend laughed out loud before kissing the top of your head and nodding.
Hey! Can I request a rise!Donnie or rise!Raph x fem!reader with a reader who is usually very loud and optimistic but has gotten depressed recently due to a boarder-line traumatizing ex attempting to make contact with them at their workplace?
All In Your Head
Rise!Donnie X Fem!Reader
Prompt: Your ex shows up to your job, putting you on edge for the rest of the night.
Pronouns: Feminine (she/her)
Relationship: Dating (not official)
Timeline: Post!Movie
Warnings ⚠️: Angst, mentions of abuse, mentions of mental illness
===================================
You were never good at dating. In fact, you only had one boyfriend in your life, and that only lasted for a few months. But, god, was it one of the worst experiences of your life.
During your time together, your ex-partner was a complete control freak. They never put a hand on you, but the mental manipulation and serial cheating they put you through almost pushed you to the edge.
Often, they made you feel crazy like you couldn’t trust your own self. Your ex had no ability to take responsibility for their actions, so everything was your fault. Obviously you hid their keys when they were in a rush. You obviously wanted to break up when you were hanging out with your friends; you were excluding them.
They would constantly have you thinking you’re the worst girlfriend ever as if you did all those things your ex accused you of.
Eventually, they confessed to you that they were no longer in love with you. They had found someone else and wanted to be with them, not you.
The breakup caused you to slip into a month long depression. You didn’t go out with your friends anymore. You didn’t talk to your parents or siblings. All you did was lie in your bed watching overrated TLC shows.
Gradually, you became your normal boisterous self. Your worried loved ones finally felt some relief as you started hanging out with them regularly, talking, laughing, and extroverted as usual.
You’d also met someone else. Donnie.
Unlike your ex, Donnie cared about you. He always wanted you to be safe, especially since him and his brothers had several enemies and you weren’t equipped to fight any of them off. Sure he could come off as a bit aloof, but you knew he never had the intention to hurt your feelings. He just had trouble understanding certain emotions.
That was better than anything your ex put you through.
•••
You tap away at your phone, texting Donnie that you’d be at your apartment soon. Your boss had basically forced you to take the night shift at the dumpling restaurant even though you had school in the morning. Whatever. Fuck it. You’re graduating soon anyways.
The scientist soon FaceTimed you, which he often did and demanded for you to stay on it until you locked the doors.
“You’re lucky my manager doesn’t care if we’re on our phones or not.” You giggled as soon as Donnie’s face popped up on the screen.
The purple clad turtle shrugged lazily, leaning back in the rolling chair he was sat in. “They’ll have to deal with it either way. Making sure you get home safe is a priority for me.”
Your heart nearly leaped out of your throat when he’d said that so nonchalantly. “Aw, my knight in shining armor.”
“Hardly.” Donnie spoke firmly with a deadpan expression. “I like to think of myself as the literary Bad Boy archetype: a social outcast going against the grain in the name of science.”
With a shrug, you placed the phone on the counter, propping the device up on your bag. “Eh, I’d say you’re more of The Outlaw.”
His drawn-on eyebrows furrowed. “You think I’m ‘potentially criminal’?”
“You remember talking to me about that weird crystal you stole from Draxum?” You smirked at him as you picked the phone back up and ambled over to the front doors to lock them.
Donnie hummed to himself before raising an eyebrow. “Touché.”
After locking the doors, you turned around to gather your belongings. You angle the phone up, facing you at eye level.
“Okay, I’m almost done. Just gotta…” your words trail off as Donnie had leaned closer towards the screen, a concerned yet curious expression adorning his features. “What…?”
“Who’s that behind you? At the door.”
A cold sweat soon overtook your body. Donnie would never mess around with you like that.
Instead of turning around, you gazed at your reflection in the phone. What you saw made you drop the device and press your hands against your lips.
It was your ex.
“(Y/N)? (Y/N), what happened? (Y/N)!” Donnie’s voice was laced with worry.
Without replying to him, you scooped your phone off the floor and ran into the back where your manager, Collin, was counting drawer.
When he saw you shivering with your back pressed against the door, he instantly stood up. “(Y/N), what happened? Are you all right?”
“I-I—” you stuttered heavily. “Someone’s… someone’s at the door…”
Collin cocked an eyebrow as he gently pushed you aside and opened the door. He’s silent for a few seconds before shutting the door, shrugging while doing so. “I don’t see anybody. Do you want me to walk you home anyways?”
You immediately nodded, grabbing your stuff as you waited for Collin to finish counting drawer.
• • •
At your apartment, you remain on FaceTime with Donnie. He had been interrogating you for like fifteen minutes: “who was that?”, “why did Collin have to walk you back?”, “Was it a supervillain?”. On and on.
“Donnie, please just relax.” Your voice shook slightly. “It wasn’t anybody you know.”
Right after that statement, there’s a loud pounding at your bedroom window. You dart your eyes over to it, but your fears are instantly nullified.
You sighed deeply as you slid the glass open to allowed the purple clad turtle to enter your room. “God, you scared the shit outta me.”
He shut the window behind him before surveying your empty Red Bull can littered room, the fixing his gaze onto you. “What did you mean by ‘it’s not anybody I know’?”
You felt your stomach drop as he reminded you of work’s events. “Donnie, I duwanna talk about it right now. Just know that that person is awful.”
The turtle’s eyebrows furrowed. You didn’t normally talk like this. If anything, you would say some sort of quip or reference to American Literature. Something his younger twin would say. But now you just seemed shaky and afraid of something he didn’t understand. And that bothered him. But nonetheless, he didn’t like seeing you upset.
Donnie exhaled. “Okay, fine.”
The two of you sat in a comfortable silence—both you and Donnie tapping away on your phones—for several minutes before you made a proposition.
“Can you… do you think you could maybe… stay over?” I’d been a few months since he stayed over the whole night. Often, the scientist would say that he had projects to work on or a mission to go on or something like that.
He shrugged lazily with a slight smile on his face. “I suppose so if that’ll make you feel better.”
Your sigh of relief causes Donnie to question your behavior. “It’s just… you usually have something to do instead.”
The purple clad turtle hummed to himself. “Well, I can tell you’re afraid of that person at your job, and now you’re afraid to be by yourself. And I think you’re a little more important to me than a project that isn’t even half way off the ground.”
You weren’t sure if Donnie fully understood how much that meant to you: to put off a project just because your ex decided to show up to your job out of nowhere and fuck up your entire night. All you knew is that he was definitely 10x better than your ex.
===============================
Leo
• You were helping him carry groceries into the kitchen to prepare for Christmas dinner when he began using Christmas themed pick-up lines on you while you both stood in the doorway of the kitchen.
• Soon, Mikey gasped, pointing between the both of you.
• “You guys gotta kiss now!”
• Shocked at his exclamation, you both gazed up at where Mikey was pointing to see a mistletoe hanging down in the middle of the doorway.
• Leo sputtered while you avoided eye contact. You guys didn’t kiss that often, so it was always awkward at first.
• “Well, rules are rules.” The blue turtle chuckled with a shrug in an attempt to ease the tension.
• Without much thought, you stood on your tippy toes and quickly peck his lips.
• Leo stood astonished at your sudden authority, a dark green gracing his cheeks.
• He then grabbed your face and kissed you softly. When you two parted, he laughed.
• “This better be your best Christmas present to date.”
Raph
• You and Raph were putting up Christmas decorations. (You two were the ones who put all the mistletoes up in the first place.)
• When you were trying to reach a doorway, Raph quickly offered to help.
• Your hands made contact at the top of the doorway and your heart nearly jumped into your throat.
• Raph had the same feeling as he glanced down at you.
• “I think we screwed ourselves.” You laughed.
• The snapping turtle snickered before cupping your cheek and pecking your lips.
Mikey
• “Hey, (Y/N), look!” Mikey drew your attention.
• When you turned to look at him, you instantly cringed.
• In his hand was a mistletoe and he was headed straight towards you.
• “Mikey, no, it has to be in a doorway!” You stood to your feet.
• He ignored you and chased you around the lair with the mistletoe in hand.
• Eventually, you ran out of breath and he held the plastic leaves and red berries between the both of you.
• “Don’t be a sore loser, (Y/N).”
• You grumbled and ended up kissing him on the cheek.
Donnie
• Donnie was a special case because he didn’t believe in traditional holiday festivities.
• “C’mon, Dee,” you tried to convince him, “they can be fun!”
• “I refuse to partake in the glorification of a large man coming down the chimney to rob me of my cookies and milk but then leave me and my whole household gifts that he somehow knew we all wanted.”
• You weren’t exactly sure what he meant, but you shrugged and strutted over to him.
• “Fine. Then I guess you don’t wanna kiss me then.”
• Donnie furrowed his eyebrows. “What?”
• “You can only kiss me under the mistletoe.” You pointed across the lab towards the entrance where a mistletoe hung in the doorway.
• The turtle hummed to himself before a robotic arm extended from his Battle Shell. It reached across the room and grabbed the mistletoe off the doorframe.
• When it drew back, it hung the plant above the both of them.
• Without a word, Donnie leaned forward and pecked you gently.
• “I—you—you can’t…” you stuttered. “You have to be… under the doorway.”
• He smirked and then returned to his stoic expression so quick you weren’t sure if you’d even seen it.
Anger—no, malice suddenly consumed Leo as he stared daggers into the back of Donnie’s head. Who the fuck did he think he was? “They were mine before they were yours”. (Y/N) had always been his. And why did he feel the need to bring it up at this moment in time? What was his point in saying that?
Malice soon took control of his body as he flew past the glass doors, charging at his older twin.
•••
Before Donnie could turn around, Leo struck the back of his head, his goggles flying off. Glass cascaded as the lenses shattered against the concrete floor.
The purple clad turtle spun around, pushing Leo away before charging at him. In his mind, this fight was a long time awaiting. He had always somewhat hated his brother for taking away his friend the way he did. In the back of his mind, though, he knew this fight was stupid and wouldn’t get them anywhere. But he also knew that Leo wasn’t going to back down.
At this point, Leo didn’t care if the fight was stupid or not. There was one thing keeping him from his partner, and that was Donnie. And to claim ownership over them—whether it was a current feeling or not—pissed him off beyond belief.
The twins scuffled for a bit until Donnie eventually landed a blow, punching his brother across the face. Leo exclaimed as he forced the scientist onto his back, straddling him and raising his fist up. Donnie had never seen that look on his brother’s face: the look of genuine hate. He wanted to hurt him.
Leo huffed in an attempt to catch his breath as he stared down at his brother. The only way he could describe his face was pure contempt. Neither of the twins had acted like this before, especially over a person. This wasn’t normal.
The blue clad turtle’s expression softened, slowly lowering his fist. He opened his mouth to say something, but pounding footsteps quickly neared the two.
“Leo, what the hell are you doing?!” Their oldest brother shoved the younger twin to the side before lifting Donnie to his feet. He was worse off: blood trickled down from his nose and his face was swollen, sure to form into bruises in the morning. Leo only had a swollen cheek from the punch and a small cut on his forehead from Donnie’s claws.
Raph boomed over to Leo and grabbed the top of his shell just above his shoulder, hauling him to his feet. “Are you fucking brain dead? I’m seriously asking because you think we’re all against you when everybody here has been trying to help you and (Y/N)! You’ve been stressing me out, Donnie, and Mikey with your melodrama, and now you’re fighting your own family?! You’re way outta line, Leo!”
Avoiding his stern gaze, Leo groaned, but didn’t say anything back. What could he say? Like Raph had said, he lost control and taken out his frustrations on his family. He just made their future interactions extremely awkward and tense.
~~~
Another week passed.
Leo stopped sleeping at the Med Bay entrance. He hadn’t talked to any of his brothers either.
He was ashamed of the way he acted; of the way he completely disrespected his entire family over a person he only met two years ago. Once again, Leo was blaming himself for everybody’s woes, but Raph had validated them:
“You’ve been stressing me out, Donnie, and Mikey with your melodrama, and now you’re fighting your own family?! You’re way outta line, Leo!”
The words weighed him down like drenched clothes. His heart crawl into his stomach. Deep down, the turtle had realized that his attitude was hurting the team. But he didn’t care at the time. (Y/N) was the only thing on his mind.
Suddenly, Leo’s self-deprecation was interrupted by the oldest of the four clearing his throat. The blue clad turtle glanced up at him for a split second, then returning his to the floor.
Raphael sighed at his little brother’s demeanor. He sat next to him on the edge of his bed, grumbling at the mass amount of empty soda cans and food wrappers scattered about the room. The two sat in silence for several minutes. Usually, Raph would know what to say when he and his brothers were feuding, but this was different.
None of his brothers had ever drawn blood. Maybe the occasional bruise or light scratch, but nothing more. Before the oldest had thrown Leo against the wall, his expression was something out of a horror movie. For a moment, he was scared. Scared of his own brother.
Back at the lab, Donnie retold the story of how it all began. The red clad turtle didn’t completely understand Donnie, Leo, and (Y/N)’s dynamic, but he understood where both twins were coming from. Sort of.
Strangely, though, the scientist didn’t seem angry at Leo. He was more angry with himself for engaging in something as childish as a physical fight with his brother. And the reasoning? Even more childish.
Finally, Raph gazed in Leo’s direction. “We’re not mad at you, little brother.”
Leo sucked his teeth, not responding.
“I’m serious.” Raph said quickly as he laid a hand on his shoulder. “We never were. We just… didn’t understand. I didn’t understand. What you did wasn’t right but—”
“You don’t think I know that?” Leo scoffed.
The red clad turtle waited a few seconds before continuing. “—but… we know you’re worried about (Y/N). So… you can come see them now. We think they’re stable enough.”
Leo’s eyes lit up as he turned to make eye contact with Raph. “Wait—really?”
When the oldest nodded, the twin wasted no time scrambling to his feet and making his way towards the Med Bay.
~~~
Inside the wing, S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. directed Leo to the door of (Y/N)’s room. As he lifted his hand to the door handle, hushed voices from the interior.
“You don’t have to keep checking up on me, Don.” (Y/N) assured him. “I feel a lot better now.”
“I do. You just woke up. I have to look for abnormalities.”
“Yeah, but…” they sighed and dropped the subject. “I wanna see Leo.”
Donnie copied their sigh. “He should be here in a bit. I sent Raph to go talk to him.”
There’s a brief silence before (Y/N) said, “did something happen with you guys while I was asleep?”
Leo chose then to enter the room. He already didn’t want to tell them about the fight, much less Donnie’s perspective.
(Y/N)’s head swiveled towards the entrance of the room. The bandage across their nose and the ones wrapped around their head didn’t deter the smile forming on their face.
With a quickly glance at the two love birds, Donnie quickly exited the room.
Now alone, Leo walked over to (Y/N)‘s side and gently laid a hand on theirs. It took everything in him to not jump on top of them and hug them tightly, wailing about how much he missed them and thought they were going to die.
He instead lifted his partner’s hand to his lips, pressing a kiss against it. “I missed you, babe.”
“I missed you, too.” (Y/N) shifted in the gurney to sit up taller. They then laughed a bit. “You look awful.”
Leo chuckled, tears threatening to spill. “Not as awful as you. I’m not the one in the hospital bed.”
(Y/N) giggled before going into a coughing fit. “Ugh, and it sucks. It’s so boring. You should sneak me out.”
“And have Donnie and Raph on my ass again? No way.” Leo pressed their hand to his face, smirking down at his partner.
A slight frown adorned (Y/N)’s visage. “What happened with you guys? You’ve all been acting weird. And where’s Mikey?”
Again, Leo didn’t want to tell them what had happened. (Y/N) was probably one of the most selfless people he’d ever met, so he knew they would be upset if they knew that the brothers were fighting over them.
“We were just worried about you.” The turtle didn’t exactly answer their question. “And I’m not sure where he’s at, but he’ll visit you when he gets the chance.”
(Y/N) didn’t like that response, but they had other things to say.
“I’m sorry, Leo. For not listening to you.”
The blue turtle’s eyes widen. “What…?”
They avoided his gaze and exhaled, their eyes becoming glossy. “I should’ve stayed underground. I wouldn’t be like this if I just listened.”
Exactly, Leo thought, you wouldn’t. But that wouldn’t be productive nor helpful to them in this moment. “Hey, don’t think like that. You’re okay now, and that’s all that matters.”
(Y/N) grinned at their boyfriend before he pressed a kiss against their lips.
~~~
After leaving (Y/N) to rest, Leo sets out to find Donnie. He hated the tension between him and his twin and had to put an end to it. Donnie had kept his promise. (Y/N) isn’t dead. In fact, they’re alive and well. And it’s all thanks to him. He soon finds him in his lab working on another invention.
“Donnie.” Leo called out to him.
With a long sigh, Donnie turned his head to face his brother. His expression was the same as usual with a hint of annoyance. The older twin didn’t say anything.
Leo slowly made his way to his brother’s side. “Dee… I’m sorry. For everything. I wasn’t thinking clearly and I took out my anger on you. That was just… it was fucked up.”
The purple turtle unhurriedly glanced at his younger brother. “Yeah, it was.”
The few seconds felt like hours to Leo, so he somewhat repeated himself. “Donnie, you’re my family. My brother. My twin. I should’ve trusted you. I mean, look at them now. They’re fine and that’s because of you.”
“Yes,” the scientist eventually turned his body towards his twin, “it is. But I get it. I was worried about them, too. And I shouldn’t have said that about them to you: the whole ‘mine vs yours’ situation. I just…” he sighed shakily, “I just miss them.”
Leo nodded with a hum. “Yeah. I know how you feel now, but I never wanted to keep them away from you—or anybody for that matter. I was… I was being selfish. And I’m sorry, Dee. I’m really sorry.”
As if on cue, tears began to fall from Donnie’s eyes. That was all he needed: an apology. His tears triggered Leo’s and he pulled his older brother into a firm hug.
The twins then silently pledged to each other that they would never let anyone or anything come between them ever again.

“C’mon, (Y/N),” Leo urged them as he carried them towards the Med Bay within the lair, “stay with me!”
Their eyelids flickered, staring up at the turtle. “Leo… I wanna… I wanna sleep..”
“No!” Leo somewhat shouted at them. “Don’t go to sleep! Just keep looking at me, baby. We’re gonna get you fixed up. Just keep your eyes on me.”
But little could be done. Their boyfriend focused and unfocused in and out of their vision. “Leo… am I gonna die…?”
He stared down at them, a look of anguish defining his features. In all honesty, he didn’t know. When Raph threw the debris off of your still form, all he saw was blood. Blood and ash from the crumbling building. Adrenaline stopped him from standing and staring too long as he instantly scooped her up and headed to the lair with the rest of his brothers.
Leo couldn’t lie to them. “Just keep looking at me. Don’t close your eyes.”
Right from the very beginning of the invasion, he had told (Y/N) to stay behind in the lair. They were as stubborn as always and followed Splinter and April to the surface, and he only knew of this when he heard them on the mics they all had on them. He’d told them to go back to safety, but they were determined to help him and his brothers defeat the Kraang. The last thing Leo had heard from them was a scream and then their mic cut out.
When Leo entered the Med Bay, he shouted for Donnie as he gently laid (Y/N)—who’d passed out by now—down on a vacant gurney.
The purple clad turtle rushed into the room with a box containing Saline solution. He hooked it onto the IV pole and attempted to find a vein within (Y/N)’s arm before Leo piped up.
“They don’t need that!” The turtle exclaimed as he grabbed Donnie’s shoulder. “You have to stop the bleeding! They’re bleeding from somewhere!”
Shrugging his hand off and sneering, Donnie finally pushed the needle into their arm. “It doesn’t work like that, Leo. They need fluids before I can do anything.”
Just then, the blue clad turtle realized he’d been shaking the entire time. Shaking with both anxiety and anger. “Donnie, they’re gonna fucking die! Don’t you realize that?! (Y/N)’s gonna—”
“Dammit, Leo!” The older twin bottled his fist, striking the floor in protest. “I’m trying my best! You’re distracting me so you need to leave!”
Everything seemed to go in slow motion after his brother’s demand. Leave? Leave them? After all they’d been through, he was just going to leave them alone? Leo went to say something, but then gazed down at his blood ridden hands and plastron. Thoughts rushed through his mind as the turtle began to breathe heavily.
This was his fault, he thought. If he had just let Raph get the key, the Kraang wouldn’t have been unleashed from the Prison Dimension. Casey wouldn’t have been raised in a post apocalyptic world. Everyone and everything would be normal. He should’ve been more deliberate in telling (Y/N) to go back underground rather. He was the cause of their pain and potential death.
He then suddenly felt a hand caressed his wrist, breaking him out of his pity party. “Leo, I need you to get a grip. (Y/N) will be fine if you let me help them. So, please. You have to go.”
“I…” is all Leo could utter before Donnie returned to (Y/N) to tend to their wounds.
Despite the harshness of his words, they stuck in the blue turtle’s mind. His partner was dying and harassing their only help wasn’t useful. There didn’t need to be anymore blood on his hands. He’d fucked up enough already, he thought.
~~~
For the next few days, Leo slept at the entrance of the Med Bay. Donnie didn’t allow him to see them until they were stabilized. The brothers had argued the first and second time, the younger twin claiming he had every right to see his partner no matter their condition. Donnie argued that (Y/N) still needed to be moderated and didn’t need Leo to stress them out.
(Y/N) had developed seizures that lasted longer the more they occurred, forcing the scientist to put them in a medically induced coma. His twin wasn’t happy about that either on the grounds of the improbability of them ever waking up.
“Leo, this isn’t a debate.” Donnie groaned as he stood behind the glass at Med Bay entrance with another IV bag in his hand. “(Y/N) needs time to heal and coming in to profusely ask them if they’re okay isn’t helpful.”
A fist formed at Leo’s side, glaring at his brother. “All I’m asking for is to see them.”
Donatello shook his head with a sigh. “You don’t want to see them right now. Trust me.”
“Then—” but again, his brother ambled further into the Med Bay, blatantly ignoring him.
It made him angry that he wasn’t being heard. Earlier that day the first argument ensued, Leo had witnessed Raph enter the Med Bay as he was returning from breakfast with his youngest brother. The twin pounded on the door demanding to be let in, but he wasn’t sure if they had even heard him or his older brothers were ignoring his pleas.
The idea of what (Y/N) was going through provoked instant nausea, leading Leo to stay in the bathroom by the toilet for hours. Nothing stayed down and it was as if he made himself physically sick from worry.
Eventually, Mikey grew concerned when he’d heard dry heaving and entered the bathroom only to be turned away.
“I’m alright, Mikey.” Leo reassured him. “Please just leave.”
The youngest brother didn’t know exactly what to say. This was Raph’s area of expertise. He would’ve said something motivational or profound, but all the orange clad turtle could do was crouch down next to him and place his hand against Leo’s shell as he expelled into the toilet once more.
In a way, Mikey had been left in the dark with (Y/N)’s condition, too. He assumed Donnie thought he’d tell Leo what was going on with him. But looking at his lethargic brother now, he felt like he owed him some kind of update.
So later that day, Mikey took it upon himself to call his brother and plead with him to let him or Leo know how (Y/N) was doing.
“Don, Leo’s losing it. He was literally throwing up just a few hours ago. Why can’t you just tell me what’s happening with them. Just to keep him from—”
“Mikey,” Donnie cut him off, “did he put you up to this?”
The orange turtle furrowed his eyebrows. “Wha—no! I said I—”
Through the phone, Mikey heard loud pounding footsteps grow louder until they paused and he heard the voice of his oldest brother. “Listen, Mikey. I know you and Leo are worried about them, but you have to understand that we don’t even fully know their condition. We will let you know when (Y/N) is better.”
The youngest turtle attempted to say something else, but the call dropped right after Raph had finished his sentence.
~~~
A week passed. (Y/N) was still in the coma and Leo was still sleeping at the Med Bay entrance. In fact, he’d gone from sleeping there to basically moving his entire room into the narrow space.
One night on his way out of the wing, Donnie almost tripped over the younger twin and the spread of comic books and blankets scattered across the floor. The scientist grumbled in frustration, gazing down at the mess.
He squatted down to his brother’s side and shook him slightly. “Leo, wake up. You can’t sleep here anymore if you’re gonna leave all this here.”
Leo glanced at him before snatching his shoulder away, turning the opposite way. “I can sleep wherever I want.”
“Sure—but not where people can trip over you.” He began collecting the comics, placing them into neat stacks.
The blue turtle sized Donnie up as he organized his comics before sighing. “Do you even care? You’re seriously more concerned about everybody else tripping over someone—your own brother—that’s been sleeping on the floor for over a week?”
Donnie grumbled as he set the final comics down on the stack. “I do care, Leo. My problem is you don’t trust me. You know I know what I’m doing. Just trust that I will tell you when (Y/N) is better.”
“But I don’t!” He swiped his hand through the middle on the comic pile, swiftly knocking it over. Leo leapt to his feet, Donnie copying his action. “I don’t fucking trust you. It’s been a week and I don’t even know if (Y/N) is alive! Them ending up like this is my fault so I should be allowed to have a part in this. I’ve literally been sick to my fucking stomach for days and you just don’t give a fuck. So no, I don’t trust you. Not with this, Donnie.”
The scientist’s expression remained stoic, which only pissed off Leo more.
Realistically, Donnie did care to an extent. He cared that his brother was getting physically sick from worry. He cared that his brother was sleeping at the entrance of the Med Bay. But he knew all Leo’s worries would be resolved if (Y/N) was awake and stable. If Leo saw how they looked right now, he’d surely break down and act the way he did when he first brought them to the lair.
Right now, (Y/N) was covered in needles leading to IV bags full of various fluids as well as an oxygen and feeding tube. Before they and Leo started dating, (Y/N) would hang out in Donnie’s lab. Most of the time, they would talk his ear off about subjectively meaningless topics. Other times, they’d help him out. The two grew closer until Leo swooped in and ruined everything. They didn’t talk to Donnie as often, mostly going out somewhere with their boyfriend.
To Donnie, his brother’s current demeanor was unjustified. For years, Leo had (Y/N) all to himself. Would it kill him to be without them for a few weeks? He’d stolen his friend, and while what the older twin was doing wasn’t intentionally vindictive, he didn’t feel all that bad for Leo.
The older twin pinched the bridge of his nose and exhaled. “Listen… I’m doing my best to get (Y/N) stable enough for you to see them. I’m not a miracle worker—I’m not even a doctor. Do you think I’m not stressed out, too? Like I’m just okay with my friend being in a coma? Did you think I liked doing that?” Donnie fought off tears as he continued. “You have no reason not to trust me. They were mine before they were yours, so don’t pretend that I don’t care! Don’t insinuate that I’d lie about their condition! And stop throwing the same goddamn pity party for yourself. Nobody is pressing you except yourself. I am the only one that’s been getting harped on, so shut the fuck up!” He then stomped passed the glass doors into the Med Bay.
Anger—no, malice suddenly consumed Leo as he stared daggers into the back of Donnie’s head. Who the fuck did he think he was? “They were mine before they were yours”. (Y/N) had always been his. And why did he feel the need to bring it up at this moment in time? What was his point in saying that?
Malice soon took control of his body as he flew past the glass doors, charging at his older twin.

================================
I waited quietly on the rooftop, staring down at my phone with Leo’s messages open. He’d last texted me thirty minutes ago that he was on his way, but the location we’d picked was about ten or fifteen minutes away from the both of us. Where was he?
The night was cold, the November air causing me to wrap my hoodie around body further. He better hurry or else I’ll be heading home. No one was even out. The streets were clear aside from the psychopaths walking their dogs or going out on night strolls. On top of this, Leo was your one and only escape from The Foot’s outlandish plans for world domination.
We met almost a year ago now. He and his brothers had been out patrolling and I was sent to scope out the area for paper stores. The brothers spotted me and gave chase for a few minutes before I eventually lost them… or at least thought I did.
As I was catching my breath, a brash voice piped up with an unbelievably cheesy quip. Of course I was hesitant in talking to him. I’d joined The Foot to save up for college—I honestly didn’t know what it was until my first mission. But hey, it paid $15 an hour—so I had nothing against any of the clan’s foes. Nor did I know that any of them were mutants.
We spent a few months sneaking to various spots around the city. One spot we frequented was a hole-in-the-wall Traditional Japanese restaurant with some of the best Yakisoba I’d ever had. Leo preferred the chicken Gyoza over the rest of the menu because it “has the perfect crunch and was better compared to the ones I make at home”. The turtle was adventurous but never went too far out his comfort zone, which I never complained about.
Ironically, spending time with him reminded me of the pleasure of life’s normalcies. Talking to him was easy because we could talk about the most random things and completely understand what the other is talking about.
Our conversations switched periodically from the differences in our lives to which one of his brothers would die first in a zombie apocalypse, to how The Lieutenant and The Brute have names and aren’t just “flame heads”. And, god, did that guy make me laugh. It wasn’t always because he was funny, but because he said his jokes with such poise.
After about 6 months, our conversations and actions became more suggestive. Like, he would say something that could be interpreted as a pickup-line and I would retort with something to solidify his judgement. Or we would be walking down the street and I’d brush up against him or vice-versa. Something of the sort happened for a couple more weeks until he told me how he felt.
It was so unconventional and makes me laugh every time I think about it. Leo and I had been talking about the way we’d want to die (getting shot or having a heart attack were considered lame. Getting evaporated by a laser beam? People would talk about that for generations) when I paused to take a bite of the gyoza we’d taken to-go.
“Do you have a boyfriend?” He had asked me. “Or—a girlfriend, maybe? I don’t judge.”
When I shook my head and asked him why, he said something along the lines of, “well, you should. You’re fun to be around.”
I teased him, asking if that was his way of confessing his undying love to me.
“Er—well… sorta.”
Things hit off pretty quickly from there.
“Boo!” A voice suddenly screeched from behind me.
With a scream, I lurched forward and spun around to face my alleged assailant only to frown at the blue clad turtle hugging his sides in laughter.
“There’s no way that got you!” He wiped tears from his eyes.
I crossed my arms against my chest. “Well, you’re late so I wasn’t immediately expecting you.”
Leo scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. “Relax, they didn’t let me off as easily as last time. ‘You’re always going out, Leo. What’re you up to?’ and whatnot. You know the deal.”
I did know the deal. There were a couple of times we couldn’t meet up because I had the same line of questioning from the other members of The Foot, especially when I’d try to sneak out of patrol.
“Yeah, I guess so.” I placed a hand against his plastron before pressing a kiss against his cheek. “So, do you have anything planned? Or just gyoza tonight?”
“Hm,” he hummed to himself, temporarily stunned by the peck, “dunno. How about takeout and a movie? It’s been getting colder out and might I remind you I’m cold-blooded.”
As if on cue, a gust of crisp air blew down my hood. We both shivered before mutually agreeing on the plan.
~~~~
While I searched for a movie, Leo chowed down talking about how glad he was that he found the Japanese restaurant. In reality, I had been the one looking for places to eat since—as stated before—Leo preferred to stick with what he knew and I told him previously that I refused to have pizza every time we hung out.
I squinted my eyes at him. “You found it? I think you may be remembering things wrong.”
He swallowed before cocking a would-be eyebrow at you, an arrogant smirk stretching across his face. “Eh, don’t think so. I remember you walking straight past it when we were looking for it on the GPS. I was the one who pointed it out.”
With an eye roll, I flicked the back of his head. “You wouldn’t have known that was the place if it wasn’t for me.”
The turtle shrugged before returning back to his meal. One of the things I enjoyed the most about Leo was the witty banter we’d often have. We would go on for several minutes snarling back and forth over the dumbest things to snark about, but it was always fun, especially when the banter became flirtatious.
Finally, we settled on a movie and cuddled up on the couch. I tried to immerse yourself as it was one of my favorites, but Leo often distracted you through any and all movies we watched together. Whether that was by pointing out a cringy couple saying, “that’s us!” or pulling me closer to him inch my inch. By the end of the movie, I would be in his lap or pressed against his plastron. If it was anybody else, I’d never let it slide.
In the midst of the film, my phone went off. Knowing what this meant, Leo snatched it off the coffee table and half-jokingly placed it behind his back before I could even think about raising my arm.
I groaned as I reached out toward him, urging him to return my phone. “I’m gonna have to go anyways, Leo. I can’t just ignore it.”
“Yeah, but you always have to go.” The turtle unhurriedly deposited the phone into my hand. “Skipping out one time won’t kill you, (Y/N).”
Shrugging, I stood up and ambled into my room to put my Foot gear on. When I return to the living room, Leo is still there. He looked me up and down before a grimace took over his features.
“Y’know, you don’t have to be a part of The Foot. I know it’s for college and whatnot but… they’re bad guys.” The blue clad turtle averted his gaze to the paused TV screen. “It’s just… I duwanna fight you if it comes down to it. And I want you to meet my family… I don’t like that we have to stay a secret.”
“Ah, Leo,” I stood in front of him and used my thumb and index finger to tilt his chin up towards my gaze, “aside from villains and heroes, we live in two different worlds. You don’t have to worry about things like money. I do. In a perfect world, we won’t have to be secret. But until I’m able to save enough, my hands are tied.”
Slowly, Leo followed you out the window and onto the rooftop. His home and The Foot Clan headquarters were in opposite directions. I could tell something was on his mind, but he opened and closed his mouth like the words simply couldn’t leave from between his lips. I tilted my head to the side in curiosity, and that seemed to get him to form words.
“(Y/N)—I just… I dunno, I just… I know college means a lot to you. And it means a lot to me that you’re passionate about something. But…” he looked off into the distance, a melancholy expression on his visage. “We can’t keep this up forever. One day, I’m gonna have to decide: you or my brothers. What’s gonna happen then?”
I stood frozen, conflicted by his statement. This was true. He and his brothers were enemies of The Foot Clan. And The Foot didn’t like them all that much either. Eventually, we were going to clash. Would we pretend to hate each other? Would we have to? I knew I couldn’t. I wouldn’t.
But as a villain, we had no standards. Betraying them would be easy, but I needed this money more than anything. And for Leo, he knew he was siding with the good guys. He would never turn on his own family for me, and I respected this.
With another shrug, I furrowed my eyebrows. “I don’t know. We’ll just have to see.”
I could tell that wasn’t the answer he was looking for by his disappointed expression, but it was the truth. Both of us held priorities above one another and wouldn’t give them up no matter what. Although, his was something you could respect undoubtedly. Mine was not.
Leo let out a sigh and offered you a half-smile. “I guess we will… but I hope not.” I’d thought he’d simply leave, but he walked towards me and pulled me close before pecking my lips. His sly smile afterwards melted into a look of admiration. It’s a look I’ll never forget.
With that, he disappeared into one of his brightly lit portals, leaving me in my lonesome atop my apartment in the chilly November night.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s been days—weeks—since you’d seen Leo. You knew he had responsibilities other than coming over to her house for a few hours to do nothing but talk and laugh with you, but fuck did you miss him.
You’d had feelings for him since he’d escaped from the Prison Dimension. He was extremely injured and had to stay on bed rest for a few weeks. You loved how he still tried to joke around with everybody after the traumatic event, and you often visited him to rewrap his injuries as well as exercise his fractured arm and hand.
During that time, Leo would soon start flirting with you saying things like “if I knew I’d have to have a near-death experience in order to get you as my in-home nurse, I’d do it more often”. Although the comment was mildly offensive to not just himself but every person who went through the Kraang ordeal, you couldn’t help but roll your eyes as heat quickly traveled to your face.
When he was healthy enough to walk around and could properly articulate his fractured bones, he would press his three-fingered hand against your stomach and lift you into the air. You questioned his behavior after the second time he’d done it, but he only looked up at you with a shit-eating grin adorning his face.
At home, you picked at your dinner prepared by your mother. She tried to make conversation with you, but all she received were “yeah”s and “uh-huh”s.
“Baby,” your mother furrowed her eyebrows in concern, “are you feeling alright?”
With a shrug, you met her eyes. “I mean… yeah, but no.”
She stood to her feet and walked over to the opposite side of the table where you were sat. Your mom gently caressed your shoulders and rested her chin atop your head. “Tell me what’s up.”
You leaned back against her chest. “I dunno… I have this friend and we haven’t hung out in a couple of weeks. He’s been busy.”
Your mother hums, sliding her hands from your shoulders to your forearms. “Is it Leo? You have that name in your contacts.”
“Uh, yeah.” You hoped she didn’t see any of the photos of him.
“Well,” she kissed the top of your head and lifted your plate off the table to throw it away before putting it in the dishwasher, “you two seem like good friends. I don’t think he would intentionally avoid you if that’s what you’re worried about.”
Her words reassured you, but it wasn’t that you thought he was avoiding you. Like she’d said, he would never do that. It’s the fact that you simply missed his presence. Leo was a joy to be around and every time he left, you’d feel a certain emptiness in the pit of your stomach. An emptiness only he could fill.
After your parents divorced, you cut yourself off from your friends and other family. The divorce came out of nowhere in your eyes. Your parents just sat you down one day and broke the devastating news. It felt like everybody moved on except for you, making you feel guilty for holding onto the past. You met Leo after a few months of isolation and the two of you have been inseparable since.
A beep from your mother’s watch goes off. She checks it and sighs. “My love, I have to go to work late tonight. Short-staffed.”
You nod before standing up to give your mom a hug, and then ambled over to your room. Shutting the door behind you, a foreign hand suddenly pressed itself against your mouth, stifling your yelp in fear.
“It’s okay, it’s me.” A familiar voice told you.
The light flicked on and there before you stood Leo, a bandaid on the underside of his chin.
Slapping his hand away and shutting off the light again, you glare at him. “Why’d you cover my mouth?”
“I knew you’d scream and your mom is here.” The turtle explained, a smirk growing on his face. “We wouldn’t want her barreling in here like she did the other day.”
It was true. Your mom had come into your room the last time Leo was here, but luckily the lights were off. She had asked if you’d seen her vibrator (which she often did because she always seemed to lose the damn thing). You wouldn’t have made a big deal of it if Leo wasn’t there, but you basically screamed that you hadn’t seen it and to get out of your room. She shrugged and continued her search the house.
You snickered at the memory. “Yeah, fair.”
Leo laughed along with you and sat on your bed, the springs squeaking underneath his weight. He scratched at his bandaid and groaned, “Totally ate shit skateboarding. I think I have an overbite from how hard I landed on my chin.” The turtle clenched his teeth, cringing at the memory.
His self-preservation had dropped significantly after the Kraang fight. After fully recovering, he started doing risky and reckless things and always came to you with a new injury you had to bandage up.
It worried you. You wanted to just swaddle him and keep him and keep him with you forever, never letting him out of your sight. But that was the best part about Leo: he was always unpredictable and sporadic. That’s what made him fun; what you were attracted to.
The blue clad turtle attempted to say something else, but you walked over to him and wrapped your arms around his neck in a hug. Leo was surprised. You weren’t a very touchy person in this way, but he returned your hug with a laugh.
“Aw, did someone miss me?” He teased. “Who am I kidding? Who wouldn’t?”
Suddenly, you began to tremble, a sob leaving your lips. Leo froze, unsure of what to do now. You’d never expressed your emotions to him, let alone cry in front of him.
The turtle pulled you out of the hug and held you by your shoulders, a sympathetic smile spreading across his lips. “Hey, hey, it’s okay! I’m here now, aren’t I? There’s nothing to be sad about, don’t cry.”
But his pleas only made you cry harder, tears collecting on your chin. Sure, he was here now, but when would he see you again? You couldn’t do another couple weeks not knowing if he was dead or alive. That empty feeling had taken over your mind and it was soon all you could think about.
He would never admit this to you, but your tears made him slightly uncomfortable. Not because he was some asshole who didn’t care about your feelings, but because he didn’t know how to get you to stop. Leo hated the sound of your sobs, especially over him. He was okay and so were they, so why was she so upset?
“(Y/N), please stop crying.” The three-fingered individual said somewhat coldly. “What’s wrong? Tell me.”
You tried to stifle your whimpers. “I just—I was so worried and… I didn’t know if you were okay—and… you weren’t texting me and—” you couldn’t continue coherently.
Leo had made out enough to know why you were upset: you were worried about him. You wanted to know if he was safe and unhurt. The Kraang events had you traumatized to the point where any disappearance from him had you antsy.
Pulling you into his lap, Leo hugged you tightly and stroked your hair, gently shushing you. “(Y/N), I’m okay. Nothing bad’s gonna happen to me. I’m sorry we haven’t seen or talked to each other in a bit but I promise I’ll be better about texting and visiting you more. I swear on it.”
You sniffled, your crying soon subsiding. “I’m sorry, Leo. I just… I really care about you. And if something bad happened to you, I’d feel like it was my fault.”
The blue clad turtle sighed before letting you go of you and gazed into your eyes, his heart breaking at the sight of your puffy eyes. “That’s not for you to take on, short stuff. What I do is my responsibility. Not yours. Don’t worry about me so much.”
That was it. That’s all he needed to say to get you to come clean.
“Leo, I can’t just do that. I like you. Like, really like you. When you were trapped in the Prison Dimension, I thought I’d never see you again. I thought that was it. I’d lost my best friend forever. Just like that.” You paused for a moment, staring into Leo’s wide eyes. “Leo… you have no idea how badly you scare me when you do reckless things. I love that you can be so unpredictable sometimes, but I hate when you hurt yourself doing it. I can’t—”
Whatever else you were going to say was muffled by Leo’s lips against yours. He wasn’t sure why he chose then to finally kiss you, but he couldn’t stand it at that point. He had feelings for you, too—way before the Kraang incident.
When he had first met you, he loved how joyful you were around him. He would come to your bedroom window to see you wrapped in your covers on your phone, a somber look on your face as you scrolled mindlessly. Once you saw him, all traces of sadness left your features as you threw open your window and welcomed him inside.
You would go on and on about your interests, which included crafting makeshift pillows out of your old clothes and cotton balls or feathers. You’d gifted him a royal blue pillow with his mask embroidered on the front of it. He slept on it every night even though the feathers within it would often prick the back of his neck. But it wasn’t about the comfortability for him. It was the fact that you’d made it for him.
Once the two parted, Leo stared up at you, his eyes glazed over as he gently rubbed his hand up and down your thigh.
“I’ve been waiting so long to do that.” The turtle admitted with a chuckle.
You go back in for another kiss, ignoring his comment. This was what you’d been waiting for. Him returning your feelings was all you could’ve asked of him.
* * *
The following morning, you groan as you stretch awake. Leo had left a few minutes after you’d kissed him again, winking at you before exiting through the window.
You lifted your hand to your lips, you fingertips grazing them as you remembered the night before. Nothing could top that moment, you thought.
Until you heard your phone go off.
Lifting it to your face, you realized Leo had texted you two minutes ago with a message that read:
