Ron Weasley
I can’t decide when Ron was worse as a friend; was it when he blamed Hermione for Scabbers’ disappearance in the third year, his jealousy of Harry in the fourth, or when he abandoned them both in the seventh?
Considering that in the first’s case, nobody knew that Scabbers was Peter Pettigrew and had faked his own death at that time and Hermione showed a distinct lack of caring or sensitivity when it’d looked like her cat -- her pet, and therefore her responsibility -- had killed her friend’s rat when that friend would clearly not be able to buy a pet to replace him and was understandably very upset...yeah, I’d say Hermione was the worse friend in that particular case. And even then, when Hermione understandably apologized first, Ron likewise apologized for how he’d behaved and -- after finding out Scabbers was really Pettigrew -- also made amends with Crookshanks. Ron also took all responsibility for preparing Hagrid’s appeal, both for Hagrid’s sake and Hermione’s, since she’d taken on so much of the burden by herself while still being swamped with her classes...and this is while he isn’t as natural of a scholar as Hermione is.
And considering that in the second’s case, Ron was NOT the only person who thought Harry had put his name in the Goblet by a long shot (the whole school thought he did, excluding Dumbledore and Hermione, and yet I don’t see anyone getting cross at Fred and George or Harry’s other yearmates for not believing him) and that Ron’s insecurity about being overshadowed by his brothers was already established and is honestly pretty damn justifiable...I would say that his jealousy was understandable, even if the way he expressed it wasn’t, and Ron more than made up for it after the fact. He clearly regretted how he’d behaved and missed Harry a lot, and both Harry and Ron would’ve likely made up a lot sooner were it not for their own stubborn pride. And one thing that’s easy to forget, if you haven’t read the original book in a while, is that Harry did fantasize about what it would be like to enter the Triwizard Tournament and be Champion at one point. He too was kind of charmed by the idea of winning the Triwizard Cup for Hogwarts and impressing his crush Cho Chang, however briefly -- it was only when he actually got it under such shady circumstances that Harry realized he really didn’t want it.
Then of course in the third’s case, as wrong as Ron was, we can point to the Horcrux being around his neck at the time, which was established to screw with the Trio’s emotions and Ron’s in particular. Ron had the most to lose out of the Trio, since Harry’s family was already dead and Hermione’s was in hiding with no memory of her while Ron’s had to stay in harm’s way, and the Horcrux fed off of that fear, as well as Ron’s previously established insecurities. And yet as Ron said, he wanted to come back the instant that he’d left. It just proved close to impossible to try to find Harry and Hermione again without help, particularly when Ron ended up getting cornered by Snatchers and having to go into hiding for a while on his own. It was only thanks to Dumbledore’s Deluminator that he succeeded in finding them again -- and I gotta say, after messing up that badly, it would take a lot of courage to come back with the knowledge of how badly you messed up and the intention of trying to make things right. Ron’s always had that, though -- he’s always been brave enough to own up to his actions and work to fix things. And frankly, I’d say that makes him a pretty damn good friend. I’ve had plenty of friends who don’t like owning up to anything they’ve done wrong, whenever we got into disagreements -- I’d much rather have a friend like Ron who’s able to accept responsibility when such situations inevitably crop up...especially when that same friend also has a great sense of humor; a generous spirit despite growing up in a poor family; a heart caring enough to make him fly an enchanted car with his brothers to his best friend’s house to make sure he’s okay after not hearing from him all summer and then take that same friend home with him after finding him locked up in his room; and a fierce sense of loyalty that prompts him to protect his friends when they’re being bullied or hurt.
“I’m the sixth in our family to go to Hogwarts. You could say I’ve got a lot to live up to. Bill and Charlie have already left — Bill was head boy and Charlie was captain of Quidditch. Now Percy’s a prefect. Fred and George mess around a lot, but they still get really good marks and everyone thinks they’re really funny. Everyone expects me to do as well as the others, but if I do, it’s no big deal, because they did it first. You never get anything new, either, with five brothers. I’ve got Bill’s old robes, Charlie’s old wand, and Percy’s old rat.”
Like honestly, why is it such a big deal that Ron struggles and complains about his problems once in a while when all other times he is always does his best to be there for his friends with their problems? People who complain about him act like he’s super unsympathetic and never helps Harry when like, off the top of my head, things Ron has done:
-Would always either stay at Hogwarts so Harry wouldn’t be alone on Christmas, or would invite Harry to his family’s for Christmas. Was also super casual about it and would come up with excuses why he was doing this so Harry wouldn’t feel awkward.
-when Harry didn’t write back to him, he quickly became worried the Dursleys were doing something bad to him, told his family about it (SEVERAL TIMES, apparently) (like as far as I can tell every single day Harry didn’t write back Ron was panicking about it to his parents and siblings and wondering what the hell was going on) and then he hatched a plan with his brothers to steal a car, break the law, fly all the way to Harry’s house, forcibly grabbed him from his screaming relatives and then took him to his house.
-Generally acts super chill about his mum blatantly giving Harry more attention than him, because he knows Harry needs it. Like, aside from a few jokes about it, he never acted overtly resentful about that. I think the Horcrux revealed that it made him insecure about whether his mum liked Harry more deep down (I’d have to reread the seventh book it’s been a while) yet he never once mentioned this. The fact he never let that show out of empathy for Harry is pretty impressive.
-tried to call Harry on the telephone despite not knowing how to use it and was then worried that he got Harry in trouble.
-when Harry wrote that he needed food, Ron once again informed his entire family and got an entire truckload sent to him.
-He informed Harry that even if he had to kidnap him from the Dursley’s home again, he was going to get Harry to spend the summer with them his family and see the Quidditch World Cup. He worked with his family to get an invitation sent to the Dursleys, then immediately wrote Harry a personal note saying “btw if they say no we’re coming anyway I will beat them all up if i have to”)
-if anyone badmouths Harry or Hermione in front of him, even someone he likes (like Seamus), he will rabidly defend them and basically prepare to fight that person.
-this includes teachers
-if someone calls Hermione (or anyone) a slur he will have to be physically restrained from attacking that person.
-when McG wouldn’t let Harry go to Hogsmeade Ron was in deep despair over the unfairness of it all, got personally angry and called McG several curse words. He and Hermione got Harry ton of sweets while they were there and tried to downplay how fun it was.
-When Percy wrote him a letter telling him to drop Harry as a friend, Ron made a giant show of ripping the letter into pieces and throwing it dramatically into a fire (what a nerd, honestly)
-generally did his best to be patient and understanding with Harry’s depression and anger issues in fifth year, but would firmly point out to him when he was crossing a line without flipping out back at him.
(which, as previous examples demonstrate, Ron’s fuse is pretty short, so that likely required a lot of effort on his part)
(like, he and Hermione never invalidated Harry’s feelings, but Ron would point out when he was getting angry at the wrong people in a pretty calm way. He said something like “It’s not our fault Snape and Umbridge are like that. We think you should stop taking it out on us when we’re on your side.” He was able to set boundaries and make Harry realize his behavior wasn’t okay while also making it clear he knew he was dealing with a lot and he was here for him and supported him. Pretty good example of how to friend and a lot more mature than most 15 year olds could have managed.)
-when he found out about Umbridge’s abuse, he was visibly sickened, argued with Harry for a long time than he needed to tell an adult, was upset Harry hadn’t mentioned it and when he couldn’t convince Harry, apparently told Hermione so she could help out and give him healing stuff.
-also just the general fact he gladly went along with all of Harry’s super dangerous adventures and literally said he would die for him and never acted resentful of nearly getting murdered on a regular basis due to association with Harry
-guys Ron even told Voldermort to shut up when he said something mean about Harry i mean. let’s just consider that. He yelled at Voldemort. I’m pretty sure he was the first one who started yelling too.
So I really don’t get why people focus on the few times Ron complained and the whole two times in their seven year friendship when he got so fucked up about his own issues that he fought with Harry and didn’t support him (and the second time probably would not have happened if it weren’t EVIL SOUL SHARD THAT AMPLIFIED NEGATIVE FEELINGS) when the entire rest of their friendship is unwavering support. It’s so weird to me. You don’t have to like Ron, but acknowledge characters can be flawed and human and don’t hold him to ridiculous standards.
’“He beat you!” yelled Ron and the charm broke,…’
If my brain is not playing tricks, I remember that is what happened when Voldemort was gloating over Harry’s ‘death’. So yes, Ron broke that charm.
And once again I am happy to remind that Bellatrix was disarmed by no one else but Ron as he went charging at her when Hermione was going to be handed over to Greyback.
Yeah, the times Ron was super impressive in having Hermione’s back would need a whole separate list, this one was mostly Harry focused.
That tracks with my memory, so probably accurate. It’s just honestly hilarious that Ron will yell at anyone who shit-talks his friends in front of him and it literally doesn’t matter who they are.- EVEN THE DUDE WHO WIPED OUT HALF THE WIZARDING WORLD. THE DUDE WHO HE WAS TAUGHT TO BE SO AFRAID OF THAT HE COULDN’T BRING HIMSELF TO SAY HIS NAME SIX MONTHS BEFORE.
THAT DUDE. HE BASICALLY CALLED THAT DUDE A LIAR TO HIS FACE AND ASSERTED HOW HIS BELOVED FRIEND WAS WAY BETTER THAN HE COULD EVER BE SO THERE.
.”I don’t care if that is apparently my friend’s dead body you’ve got there, he’s still way more awesome than you and would never lose 2 you and I will not stand for you sullying his good name, fite me” That was Ron. And he was also so pissed out about Voldemort not only killing his bff, but having the GALL to SAY MEAN THINGS ABOUT HIM AFTERWARDS, that his anger was powerful enough to BREAK A CURSE.
Like what Neville did was amazing, but let’s also appreciate that Ron stood up to Voldemort on Harry’s behalf first, and the sheer power of his friendship inspired rage (combined with Harry’s love or whatever) counteracted a magic spell. Let’s appreciate the truly ridiculous levels Ron takes his “talk shit, get hit” policy about people badmouthing his friends to, because it honestly should be iconic.
Harry might scrape by with one or two clever one liners each book, but Ron is consistently so funny and dry and I hate that it’s not as appreciated by fandom. Even the people who defend this poor guy usually do it in terms of his relationship with/ importance to Harry - reminding people what a brave, loyal friend he is, which, yes cool but there’s more. Anyway I really want to make a post similar to all the ones made for Harry, citing all his witty comments from the books but I am also very lazy.
Very true. Ron is hilarious, and his humour was one of the reasons I got into HP in the first place.
In the books, he’s dry and witty; he made the jokes. In the films, he was the joke. Book!Ron was someone you laughed with. Film!Ron (despite Rupert Grint’s amazing performance) was someone you laughed at.
Ron Weasley quotes:
*upon learning just how many books Hermione is planning on taking on the Horcrux Hunt* “oh of course, I forgot we’ll be hunting down Voldemort in a mobile library.”
“From now on, I don’t care if my tea leaves spell ‘Die Ron Die’, I’m chucking them in the bin where they belong.”
“You need your inner eye tested, if you ask me.”
“Percy wouldn’t recognise a joke if it danced naked in front of him, wearing Dobby’s tea-cosy.”
“I want to fix that in my memory forever. Draco Malfoy, the amazing bouncing ferret…”
“There you go Harry! You weren’t being thick after all— you were showing moral fibre!” *After hearing Dumbledore’s speech about Harry’s actions during the second Triwizard Task*.
*During a Divination lesson— a lot of Ron’s best lines are from Divination lessons, he only had slightly more patience with it than Hermione— after Harry’s just realised that he’s some how ended up with two Neptunes on his astrology chart for the day he was born* “Aaaaaaah, when two Neptunes appear in the sky, it is a sure sigh that a midget in glasses is being born, Harry…”
*Moments after the last one* “Can I get a look at Uranus too, Lavender?”
*After Hermione has told them that they ought to all get some sleep if they don’t want to sleep in on the day of Bill and Fleur’s wedding* “A brutal triple murder by the bridegroom’s mother might put a bit of a damper on the wedding”.
*During Snape’s first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. Harry’s just said that the main difference between a ghost and an inferius is that inferi are solid and ghosts are transparent. Snape then humiliates Harry by saying that that’s a five year old’s answer and that the real difference is that inferi are corpse puppets and ghosts are the imprints of departed souls. Ron leaps in to defend him.* “Well, what Harry said is the most useful if we’re trying to tell them apart! When we come face-to-face with one down a dark alley, we’re going to be having a look to see if it’s solid, aren’t we, we’re not going to be asking ‘Excuse me, are you the imprint of a departed soul?’”
“I’d hate to see what the Ministry’d do to me if I blew up an aunt. Mind you, they’d have to dig me up first, because Mum would’ve killed me.”
*When Hermione’s asking if either he or Harry have seen her copy of ‘Numerology and Grammatica’* “oh yeah, I borrowed it for a bit of bedtime reading.”
*When warning Harry about Percy’s hero-worship of Mr Crouch* “They’ll be announcing their engagement any day now.”
*During another Divination lesson, this time gazing into crystal balls* “It’s obvious what this means. There’s going to be loads of fog tonight.”
“Hello Hagrid, tell us, have you been setting anything mad and hairy loose in the castle lately?”
*After Hermione claimed that Kreacher wasn’t mad.* “His life’s ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck on a plaque like his mother’s. Is that normal, Hermione?”
Ron and Harry are brothers in sass and I love them both so much.
Also this when the trio break into the Ministry:
♚ WEASLEY IS OUR KING ♚ - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Your wheezy, sir, your wheezy!- wheezy who is giving dobby his jumper! the thing harry potter will miss most sir!
I feel bad for Rupert Grint because he was perfectly cast as Ron Weasley and the people who made the movies took away a lot of what made Ron awesome in the books. Both Rupert Grint and Ron Weasley deserved a lot better than what they were given in the movies.
My favorite headcanon is Ron teaching Harry to shave with some sort of charm that all the boys are taught growing up by their dad’s. But of course Harry never got to have that, so when he’s like 13 and hair starts forming on his face, Ron being the sweetheart that he is offers to do it for him.
I LOVE this idea. I can see Ron helping him out and Seamus wandering into the bathroom and giving them shit and Ron being all “Piss off” and just continuing to carefully shave Harry’s face all the while sharing horror stories of all the crap his brothers tried to pull on him the last summer when he first started shaving. “Stop laughing, Harry, or I’m gonna accidentally charm off your whole sodding chin!”
Omg and then Neville sidles in and is hovering because his dad couldn’t teach him either. And Ron finally noticing and doing some quick connections in his head and then just saying, “you next!”
WAIT A MINUTE. Dean doesn’t have his (magical) dad around either. What are you doing to meeeeeee.
Is Ron the only Gryffindor boy their year with a magical dad that is not dead, missing, or hospitalized? JKR WHY?!?
(Though it actually makes sense, considering when they were all born and what was happening. But STILL)
And in that moment Ron instantly accepted the role of Gryffindor Dad
This is why Ron’s a prefect lol
This is the content I come here for.
Did I miss something?? Did they read the books?
… It was not out of anger at her….
Oh boy. Receipts time.
So Harry has a legitimate meltdown, yells at both of them (when they are explaining things) and she’s practically begging him to understand - but he’s in a meltdown.
And let’s pull this receipt set too, one where Hermione is nagging Harry to the point of him exploding once again:
Oh, yes, Hermione hitting multiple triggers towards Harry and he yells at her again - and again - and again - because she doubts him.
I dunno what books this sod read but it wasn’t the published series.
Right. Ron’s the only one who gets a Harry quality pseudo-apology. Not Hermione. Ron.
"Harry was her best friend" -- I don't think Hermione having a male best friend would invalidate her feelings for Ron, even if you wanted to pit one against the other. You can have male friends you're not romantically attracted to, and Book!Harry and Hermione are never really shown in a romantic light. And on Harry's side, Ron and Hermione were his best friends, but he always related more to Ron. Ron was Harry's first real friend, and when Ron left in the books, he and Hermione were miserable without him. The times in the books when Harry and Hermione are together alone are noticeably less good-natured and fun than when Ron's around. (Plus I'm sorry, where did Hermione specifically say that Harry is her best friend in the books? I know she says it in the HBP film, but that most definitely isn't "in the books.")
"Hermione likes Ron, but before Deathly Hallows Ron wasn't that nice to her" -- I guess Ron inviting her over to his house over the summer, inviting her along to the Quidditch World Cup, going to Hogsmeade with her, frequently complimenting her intelligence, and being quick to get in a fight to defend her honor whenever anyone insulted her doesn't count? Yes, he teased her, sometimes rather harshly, but it doesn't mean he was a mean person or that he wasn't that nice to her.
"Harry and Hermione never had a real fight" -- I suppose the Firebolt fiasco in year three where Harry and Ron were so mad with Hermione that they didn't care when Hermione stubbornly avoided both them and the commonroom because she was so sure she was right?
I know this person cites the books, but I really can't help but feel as though they might be thinking more of the films.
one of the v. important things the movies missed about ron is just like, how down to fight he was at all times. like not even duel just he was always ready to physically beat the shit out of people who insulted his family or friends and WOULD if no one stopped him.
there are so many points in the books where its just casually dropped in ‘and so Harry and/or Hermione had to physically restrain Ron’ usually from Malfoy but if Harry or Hermione weren’t paying attention it became ‘and so Ron punched Malfoy in the face’.
Like, Ron cursing Malfoy for calling Hermione Mudblood wasnt just a one off thing like every time he did that in the future when Ron was there it was like ‘ron had to be stopped from ending Malfoy’s life’ just thrown in there. Same for any other severe insults.
My absolute favorite instance of this is in the first book when they’re just watching a Quidditch game and Malfoy just starts bothering Ron and Hermione during it and is finally like ‘man its pretty funny how the Gryffindor quidditch team is recruited based on pity like y’know Potter has no parents, Weasley’s brothers have no money they should include Longbottom for having no brains” and Ron just flings himself at Malfoy and starts punching him and rolling around under the bleachers and Neville is like “uh shit i guess i better fight CRABBE AND GOYLE BOTH AT ONCE so they don’t go after him” (very underrated moment of courage from Neville he knew he had no chance but he just went for it honestly almost more impressive than confronting Voldemort in book 7)
and they’re just fighting for like twenty minutes and Hermione doesn’t even notice because she was so focused on tuning Malfoy out and watching the game and when its over she looks around like “where’d ron go” and then later its mentioned “Harry sees Ron and his face is covered in blood and he’s like “GOOD JOB WINNING THE GAME HARRY I GAVE MALFOY A BLACK EYE SO WE BOTH DID GREAT THINGS TONIGHT oh btw i have detention for a week and neville’s unconcious but they say he’ll be fine”.
Ron is ride or die and will fight u for $0 y’all
harry: and what if I wave my wand and nothing happens? ron: throw it away and punch him on the nose
Draco in COS: Pity Granger didn’t die.
Ron: I don’t need my wand. I’m going to kill him with my bare hands.
Ronald the badass.
The line in the book was better: Ron glared at Seamus, then looked at Dean and Neville. “Anyone else’s parents got a problem with Harry?” he said aggressively.
“Your Wheezy, sir, your Wheezy — Wheezy who is giving Dobby his jumper!” Dobby plucked at the shrunken maroon sweater he was now wearing over his shorts. “What?” Harry gasped. “They’ve got… they’ve got Ron?” “The thing Harry Potter will miss most, sir!” squeaked Dobby.
I absolutely love Ron. He’s one of my very favorite characters, and though he sometimes stumbles, I really think he was the most loyal friend anyone could ever ask for!
