So…

Let’s set the stage here:

It is Thursday November 5, 2020. Most of the world, including the US is still observing some level of COVID-19 pandemic measures. The US’s President is currently Donald Trump, much to the chagrin of more than 50% of the US population and probably a lot of the rest of the world. The trajectory of US politics and the US response to COVID-19 hinges on the results of this election.

The US presidential election was held two days ago on Tuesday November 3, and, as the poll results are being reported, as of this evening, it still looks like Trump is winning the election. However, not all precincts in several states have reported. Many US residents (like myself) are refreshing maps provided by various news outlets to see what states are providing their electoral votes (all of the votes for the state) to republicans (red, Trump) or democrats (blue, Biden). The map is very red, but the race is tight and there’s enough electoral votes to flip the map blue between a few “swing” states, specifically: Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Nevada.

It’s taking a long time, by US standards, to determine the election because there are an unprecedented amount of mail in ballots due to the pandemic, and, as these ballots are being counted, Trump is demanding, via Twitter, to “Stop the count.”

A lot of tumblr users, especially US users, obviously, are posting about all of this and waiting to see if those states are going to flip blue.

The US election is the focus on tumblr.

No one, except very dedicated Supernatural fans, are watching Supernatural Season 15 Episode 18 Despair.

However, everyone who has been in fandom heavy spaces on tumblr, is well aware of the existence of the Supernatural fandom and the large portion of the Supernatural fandom that ships the angel Castiel and one of the show’s main protagonists, Dean Winchester. The ship, Destiel, has been around as long as Cas.

The episode that is airing is not the show’s finale, so there is an assumption that if the show runners decide to make Destiel canon, it would happen then. Also, a lot of Supernatural fans have stopped watching the show for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to, the writers coming up with misogynistic and homophobic storylines and queerbaiting with Destiel.

The last five minutes of the Supernatural finale coincides with one of these states having their ballot count flip blue.

In those five minutes, in order to save Dean from being killed by a Grim Reaper, Cas confesses that he is in love with Dean. (Two seasons earlier, in order to save his adopted son, Cas made a deal to return to the Angel after life, the Empty, when he experienced a moment of true happiness. A moment he experienced by confessing his love.)

The Empty takes Cas and Billie, the Grim Reaper.

Dean does not respond to Cas and seems to still be processing what Cas said when the episode ends.

Regardless, Destiel is now at least half canon, and everyone was expecting it about as much as the Spanish Inquisition.

Tumblr loses its mind. About the election. About Destiel.

There are posts about Dean processing his emotions at the speed Nevada counts its ballots. There are posts about Cas going to super hell to turn states blue.

There are posts about a homophobic love confession and burying your gays.

Apparently Putin is resigning. Of course he is.

Everything feels like a chaotic fever dream.

(Putin was, obviously not resigning, but it took at least a few hours for this misinformation to stop circulating tumblr)

Putin wasn't the only misinformation that night. Truly, anything seemed possible, from the glorious to the terrible.

This really captures the vibe (i.e. completely unhinged):

If I have to see one more “we survived him before we can do it again” post I’m going to scream.

So many people didn’t. So many more people are going to die. Women are going to bleed out in parking lots because doctors are scared to give them the abortion they need. Migrates are going to die in detention centers. Kids are going to have their parents ripped away in mass deportations. Potentially millions of people are going to lose their healthcare.

Yes, we keep fighting, but don’t say we survived before. A lot of people didn’t.

gen z has to reckon with its radicalization problem. you are not a morally pure and superior generation of youth come to save the world, your men and boys are radicalized at an unprecedented level and you ignore it because it’s too hard to address but you have to. these boys are in your classes, they date your friends, you know them and you cannot continue to pretend this is an “old white guy” problem

do something nice for yourself today, ideally MORE than one thing, but at least one.

it can be as small as making a cup of tea with a flavor you like or taking a second to sip on your coffee, really pay attention to how it tastes and the feeling of the warm cup in your hands.

take an extra break at work. take it in the bathroom if you have to, but give yourself that extra time. deep breaths.

get a little snack. something that you might not normally allow yourself.

If you sat this out it’s on you. These margins are so fucking thin. Literally fuck your absurdist “I can’t in good conscience” garbage. Where’s your fucking conscience when we never get to vote again. When women die because they cannot get basic healthcare. When the situation in Palestine becomes even worse under Trump like we all could’ve told you it would.

listen i too used to think it's weird that in the musical elphaba cares more about fiyero being killed than her sister, but then i realized this is also true in the book lmao😭

Personally I think part of the difference (in the musical) is the Nessa died because of her while Fiyero died for her.

Elphaba thinks of herself as a curse, thinks that she makes life worse for everyone she loves because of her - and it doesn't make her happy but it's something she almost expects.

But Fiyero giving his life for her, not as a consequence of his actions but because he actively stepped in to save her really sends her into a spiral.

Friendly reminder that people are allowed to be apprehensive about the Wicked movie. Fans of the Broadway show have been waiting YEARS for this movie to be made, but unfortunately it's being dropped during a time where adaptations of Broadway shows just aren't hitting the same, because they're not being catered to the right audience.

Even if you overlook the casting, and the fact that they're not even being marketed as the genre (the saving grace with this one is that most people know that Wicked is a musical), the actual musical aspect is enough to trigger a fear of the unknown.

I've seen a lot of people defending the most recent Mean Girls movie by saying, of course the music is going to be different, because it's a different medium and the stage version won't translate well on screen. And I do partially understand that, I get that changes need to be made for it to work better, but they changed the arrangements of the songs entirely, and I think that has more to do with trying to hit a different audience than it does about screen translation. It's a weak excuse when you look at the bigger picture.

Movie adaptions of musicals have been made throughout cinema history, and SO many of them have been successful for the right reasons, and some of them were even recent. Grease, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Into the Woods, Little Shop of Horrors, West Side Story, Tick, Tick... Boom!, Chicago, The Sound of Music, In the Heights, Matilda—the list is endless. And, sure, there are issues with each and every one of them, things we can complain about, stuff we can pick apart, but the one thing that's consistent is that they all have the right energy. Changes were made because they needed to be, but the music and the vibe stayed the same. There's no excuse to revamp the entire thing.

Which brings us back to the fear of how they're going to handle Wicked. If "movie musicals shouldn't have as much music in them to balance it out" then what are we doing here? Because Wicked, in particular, is a musical where the score acts as a driving force for the plot, and if you're going to take half of that out to cater to an audience that doesn't like musicals, or change the arrangements, revamp the numbers etc. then it isn't going to work.

Obviously, we can't judge it too harshly yet, because we've had a 1 minute teaser trailer, but please remember that fans are allowed to be apprehensive.

And, side note, creators of movie musicals need to stop trying to make musicals for people that don't like them. If they focus on their target audience, then they'll be successful—that's filmmaking 101 and should not have to be said but here we are.

Give me Enjolras who is supportive and loving and understanding towards Grantaire, but who is also affected by his boyfriend's addiction because it's hard seeing a loved one like that

Give me Enjolras who will sometimes come crying to Combeferre or Courfeyrac because he hates seeing R so broken and he feels like there's nothing he can do to help

Give me Enjolras who can't sleep on the nights that Grantaire goes out because he's so terrified of something terrible happening to him while he's drunk

Give me Enjolras who is petrified of getting a phone call from the hospital saying that Grantaire is in there

Give me Enjolras who gets so worried he searches every bar in the damn city just so he can get his boyfriend home safe

Give me Enjolras who takes care of Grantaire, who rubs his back when he's throwing up or holds him when he's crying or nurses his frequent hangovers

Give me Enjolras who hates seeing his boyfriend like this because it kills him that Grantaire is in so much pain.
