Happy Year Turning!

In Illthdar, there are several holidays. Some unique to the planet that logic and reason forgot, some less so. In Guardians of Las, the characters experience Solstice - a three day non stop event. After Solstice comes Year Turning, which is the equivalent of our New Year's Eve and day.

Now, in the city of Las, with the dominant religion being crystal worshippers, most people pilgrimage to the Order of Mana to pay a visit to the giant yellow crystal they protect - called Vvekw.

Why is it called Vvekw and not Mana? Well Mana is the name of the goddess said to have made the planet and everything on it. Vvekw is just one of a few special "children" of the goddess and acts as her representative for the island.

Other things people will do is have their fortunes told by one or more of the many types of fortune tellers who set up shop in the market at this time of the year. One of the most popular is tarot card reading in a format called Arianrhod's Wheel - a spread with three cards for each quarter of the year and a lone card in the centre to represent the querent.

As the year progresses, I'll post information on each of the holidays in the Illthdarian calendar. The next one is Twelve Nights.

Ostara

In Illthdar, there are several holidays. Some unique to the planet that logic and reason forgot, some less so. In Guardians of Las, the characters experience Solstice - a three day non stop event. After Solstice comes Year Turning, which is the equivalent of our New Year's Eve and day. After that comes Hallmarks' wet dream: Twelve Nights. After that we have Ostara, a cross between Easter and Mothers Day.

Faeries, with few exceptions, have difficulty getting pregnant and carrying to their full terms. What's more, magic can only do so much to ease delivery. These factors alone are plenty to be concerned over, but with life as it is on Illthdar - wild and unstable weather, not to mention all the things that could kill a person - when a baby is born, it's a celebration.

Mostly, Ostara is a holiday for the people residing on the lower rungs of society. The affluent more likely to designate specific days of the year to mark the date of motherhood and birth of their first born.

Ostara is celebrated with families and clans coming together to erect long poles in front of the homes of new parents. Long ribbons of any number of colours and patterns are woven around the pole by way of a dance, a wreath of flowers - selected specifically to bless and protect the newborn - is carried down the pole as the ribbon is wrapped.

In addition, animals with young are often gifted to new couples, in the hope some of that fertility is contagious.

Finally, as the day turns to dusk, families will dine together. Two seats are left empty at the table: one for mothers who passed away, and smaller seat for babies that didn't survive.

The next holiday on the Illthdarian calendar is Beltane: the holiday of meetings and unions.

Happy WBW from writingamongthecoloredroses! In your world, how is storytelling seen? Is it sacred, encouraged or is it pushed down by the government?

Thanks for the ask! Sorry about the delay in responding.

There's more than one form of government on Illthdar, and structure of these varies. Law is also somewhat relative, as well - on a whole, the planet is generally lawless, rules only apply to those at the bottom of the social scale, and even there exists subculture rules that render pyramids of pyramids of social governance.

That said, storytelling is a tool. A means of manipulating the opinions and mood of the masses. The fact that a lot of demons believe they are an innately corrupt race is proof of how effective generational lifetimes of propaganda drip-fed into regional stories can be. That is what power looks like and that is how it is maintained: those that write history control both it and all future outcomes. So long as the story benefits the powerful, it isn't going to be silenced - simply put, it's too useful. It's no mistake that the two High Elders responsible for both documenting and cataloguing historical events in the Order of Mana happen to be kept in very close proximity to the High Priestess Chiyoko.

Calling fantasy writers!

My dash is pretty empty of original writing content right now! I’d really love to check out some new fantasy blogs and see where everyone is escaping to.

Could you interact with this post if you write high fantasy so I can check out all your awesome wips?

You can also send me a message (I’m friendly I promise) if you’d prefer.

I’m excited about all fantasy, but especially love new adult, a slow burn romance, shapeshifters, magic, royalty, fancy gowns, steampunk or big adventures and yeah okay many these are in my wip but that’s because I love them!

I’d also really appreciate if you could hit the reblog, so I can reach further afield *grabby hands*

Thanks!

I’m at the start of an urban fantasy series and I also recommend @illthdar high fantasy series and @whimsicallytwisted steampunk wip and @rae-writes-the-thing has the early stages of a visual novel happening 😁

A girl I went to high school with asked me if I wanted to buy some essential oils to ““purge the toxins from my body” and I cheekily responded “no thanks, I have a liver for that” and she unfriended me.

Reblog if you own a liver and at least one kidney

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Let's talk divination! What are some ways people have tried to predict the future? Are any of them effective? What's people's general opinion on it? Are any groups violently opposed, and if so, why? Can anyone do it or does it take something special?

Avatar

Thanks for the ask! Sorry about the delay in responding.

Like many things, divination is a culturally diverse topic on Illthdar. There's something for everyone and, traditionally on Year Turning, Illthdarians will go have their fortunes told. There's palm reading, cards, fortune sticks, ball or bowl scrying, scorch mark reading, bone or dice throwing... You get the idea.

While there are some subsets that are skeptical or disapproving of divination, largely it's an openly accepted practice - most finding it amusing at the least. Only a select few are hostile to the craft.

Happy MGM! Does your OC have tattoos? If yes, why did they decided to have it? Do they want more? If no, why not? Is it soccially unacceptable, are they scared of needles or just don't like it? /@catharticallysarcastic/

Thanks for the ask! Sorry about the delay in responding.

Scyanatha has a couple, her favourite is a series of letters down her spine. The ink is faded, she got the tattoo so long ago. As far as culture is concerned, faeries and demons are generally accepting if not openly welcoming to tattoos. Scyanatha is a person of status among the Unseelie court, so even if someone disagreed, they wouldn't likely be in any position to criticise.

Happy storyteller saturday! Which of your OCs stop working (character.exe has crashed) when their crush is being cute or sexy?

Thanks for the ask! Sorry about the delay in responding.

Seth is your man. His partner flirting with him in almost any way will have his brain flatlining.

Second to him, but to a lesser degree, is Zercey. Her brain starts buffering and it takes actual minutes for it to fully process what is happening. A word of caution, though: unless her partner has really invested the time and energy into their relationship, there's a small risk that she's not going to be very happy to have them playing with her attraction.

Happy STS! Hope you are doing well. Here is my question; What item would your OC buy and use in bulk?

Thanks for the ask! Sorry about the delay in responding.

Well the easy, boring, character to answer this would be Zercey, who is Italian and will make homemade pasta - so her bulk buy is flour.

But we don't come here for boring, so the oddest bulk buyer is Abaddon who will buy rods of different kinds of metal in many gauges for their hobby crafts.

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Is there are class system in your world? If so, which factor (wealth, gender, etc) defines it?

Avatar

Thanks for the ask! Sorry about the delay in responding.

There are two distinct forms of classism on Illthdar. The first is the widely accepted belief that celestials are the greatest by default, demons are inherently corrupt by nature and faeries fit somewhere in between.

The second is found within the group subcultures of demons and faeries. There's a pecking order to the individual faery and demon races. They might call the systems by different names - for many fae, it's the courts; for demons like the tengu, it's the shogunate.

In short, the most privileged class is the celestial, followed by faeries with demons at the bottom of the heap. Within faeries, there is another hierarchy to follow with kings and queens of the courts being the top. For demons the line of titles is more varied, with a mix of royal titles and military ones.

Last line tag!

Tagged by: @farrradays

Rules: share the last line (or few lines, if you’d like) that you wrote for your WIP, then tag as many people as words in the last sentence (if you can).

A piece from “Nightmare Apocalypse” I wrote the other day. :)

Tagging: @silver-wields-a-pen , @jaimistoryteller , @vanrambling , @onemoredayofwriting , @elenajohansenauthor , @necros-writings , @drowsy-quill , @juliawrites98 If anybody got already tagged, just ignore me XD.

Thanks for the tag ^=^ Awesome imagery in that description, I love it ^=^

From Brotherhood: Divinely Volatile (chapter 10)

The passion in Ambrose’s words took Ndiaye by surprise. She thought she had them figured out; labelled them monsters and planned to drag Yueliang from their grasp if need be. But then, they acted human, and she wondered if she wasn’t overreacting.

Thanks for the tag! Sorry it's taken so long.

From the working WIP in the Illthdar series: The King's Men

The midday sun had passed overhead by the time her story finished. Lemko understood slightly less than half of it, but didn't dare interrupt when Zercey was gesturing her hands fiercely throughout. At the end of it, she struggled to find something to say, ultimately settling on an apology. "I am sorry. My Lerki is very Fire. He is good, but he does not remember to think about others always."

Hullo and happy STS! What was your first writing project like? Have you reused anything from it in Illthar?

Avatar

Thanks for the ask!

It was about my favourite pink teddy bear getting a bicycle. I was 8 years old.

My next real attempt at an original work was back in my early teens. I wanted to write about a thief who left calling cards at the scene of the crime. I scrapped the whole idea when my mother told me I should only write about stuff I know. Arguably, she had a point - I did zero research when I was writing it. I stopped showing her my WIPs.

After that, I didn't write anything beyond fanfiction for years. Some bits of my fanfiction for Grudgekin The Thistle Girl, and the Three Little Pigs, I did incorporate into the Illthdar series - the biggest aspect being the world building, the fact that all the fairytales are real.

Happy STS from writingamongthecoloredroses! What would a modern/no magic AU of your WIP be like?

Thanks for the ask!

It would end up looking like a third person POV Hunger Games with a World War vibe check to the face.

Happy STS! What's your top 5 favourite line you've written so far? /@catharticallysarcastic/

Thanks for the ask!

Gosh, the top five. I'll have to paraphrase some of these because the files take too much effort to load up on my phone.

  1. Loving the venin was like loving the rain; it was never meant to last forever.
  2. There is always a survivor.
  3. "I'd slap you, but shit splatters." "Indeed, your hand would never hold shape from the effort."
  4. "if you look closely, you'll find you're made of stars."
  5. "Why don't we try going somewhere we don't want to get to?" ... "So of course I said 'Illthdar' and we woke up on this dumpster fire of a planet in the Order's infirmary. God, I wish I had said university. Why did I ever think that was the scariest thing that could ever happen to me? I had no clue!"
