I'm under quarantine and reaching out to fantasy writers for a spot of curiosity. How do you think your characters and your world overall would deal with being in quarantine or a pandemic? Please ignore this ask if you are suffering anxiety or are simply done thinking about the issue. This is not a life or death question, I am just stuck at home and exceptionally bored.
Thanks for the question! I'm sorry that you're under isolation, it's not easy - even if someone is a homebody, being required to stay in one place brings out some strong emotions. I feel for you. For those that are anxious with regards to COVID-19, I'm including trigger warnings, just to be safe.
Isolation in relation to illness in the fantasy setting is addressed in a later book in the Illthdar series - the fourth book to be exact, named: In The In-between. So far, only the first book has been released, with the second planned for release sometime next year. There's a large main cast, so for this question, I'll focus on Abaddon's team.
Vyxen doesn't like being in one spot for too long and she can't do boredom. She would suffer to keep others from getting sick, but anything less than a contagious illness and she's climbing out the nearest window if she can't leave by the door.
Scyanatha loves to read and, used to the slow passage of time, but she's evil when she's bored and would be tempted to set off little dramas to entertain herself. She's someone best isolated with no more than one (1) other person. For the sake of everyone.
Abaddon is very happy to snuggle under ten blankets and hide there for a few months. They will entertain themselves by making things, mostly small trinkets and jewellery, but this assumes they have materials to work with.
Nyima will get tired of doing nothing. She isn't used to not having things to do. She'll try her hand at making bone jewelry, as that was something her people did, but she'll regret not practicing - finding the results of her efforts a disappointment. She'd hate being cooped up.
Zercey would make all the food, drown herself in books, sing every song she knows off key... And then she'll rage when she looks at the clock four years later and realises that kept her busy for exactly one day. She'll spend the rest of the time muttering to herself.
Magnilla is the absolute best at being in isolation. She's perfectly composed and comfortable not doing anything. Why, do you not agree?
