Writing ask game idea

Hey writing community: I had an idea for an ask game that I want to run past people.

Basically you pick one or more of your OCs and have them say something in an ask to another writer, who then would have one or more of their OCs respond.

The idea is to help flesh out character personalities, sometimes it's easier to have them just interact. If a writer doesn't know where to start with the interaction, the ask could be just the prompt they need.

Thoughts?

Happy Storyteller Saturday! Different people have different ways of expressing affection. Do any of your OC's struggle with showing affection to those they care about? Does any OC have a very specific way of showing affection?

Thanks for the ask!

Hoo boy! Yes, yes some for sure do. Tundra is a great example. His background as an assassin, trained from early childhood puts has him forever putting a harsh acceptance to life - life is short, cheap and expendable. He doesn't show his feelings well at all and he's too laid back otherwise to get angry when people misunderstand him.

It's a major problem for him, because he does care a great deal and he shows it with his consideration of the needs of his loved ones. He's the person who looks at problems and puts himself forward to fix it. Now, his way of fixing is really just kicking ass and taking names, but he's the first person to step up if his friends can't do something on their own. He thinks of his own needs last, which makes him reckless, but his heart is in the right place - even if he'll never just say so.

Happy Storyteller Saturday!! What's an event from your wip you had to drop because the plot diverted?

Avatar

Thanks for the ask!

For Guardians of Las, while it wasn't so much a plot deviation but more a word limit issue, I had to drop a scene very early on with Zercey and Abaddon working together to complete sections of a training obstacle course. There wasn't enough time to introduce the concept and run-up to the plot point, plus it risked distracting from a later one in the book.

Happy Storyteller Saturday. If your OC's self from 5 years ago could meet their current self as they are in the story, what do you think they would say to each other?

Thanks for the ask!

One character that would love to have the chance to warn her younger self is Vyxen. Vyxen is someone who lives life to the fullest, but that doesn't mean she lives without regret. She would tell her younger self to protect and save her father, and she would tell herself to never wander absentmindedly in the forest where her family lives.

Happy Storyteller Saturday? Are any of your OC's looked down upon by their peers? Why and how do they cope with it?

Thanks for the ask!

Illthdar is a dark fantasy that emulates reality and one of the elements of that evil underside is that bigotry exists in several forms. (Apologies, baby hit answer before I could finish)

One example are the demons: by Illthdar definition, a being is a demon if their race's history involved evolution of some form. I.e., their kind came from certain people being transformed from something else. Angels are demons, tengu are demons, vampires and werewolves are demons and, technically so are butterflies.

how the characters deal with something so arbitrary differs. Magnilla's clan uses propaganda to bury this fact. Abaddon chooses to ignore the haters. Date has internalised it.

Happy STS! Which characters of yours would want to go into a TV show or movie? Which ones would they go into if they could?

Avatar

Thanks for the ask!

Arguably any of the human cast that's been on earth and knows what a TV show is would take it over Illthdar. So, in Guardians of Las, of the main cast, that's Seth, Tundra, Vyxen and Zercey. Not human Abaddon and Scyanatha, too, though they wouldn't mind as much either way.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! What’s one aspect of your writing that you’re proud of?

Avatar

Thanks for the ask!

It's probably a little silly, but it's hearing from people who read my work. It doesn't matter what the feedback is, I learned a lot from the negative, but knowing that someone read it and liked it or cared about it enough to tell me what they think is the best feeling. Back in my fanfiction days, I lived for it. Those same readers convinced me to take the next step and make my original work.

That's something I'll never forget, it's why I support fanfiction writers. The teeth they cut today practicing are the ones that will bring us the next generation of great stories.

STS! In your WIP what has been your favorite character interaction?

Avatar

Thanks for the ask!

In Guardians of Las, it's the first conversation between Seth and Abaddon. Even if he assumes the reason why Abaddon uses they-pronouns, he's still accepting and respectful. Likewise, Abaddon treats him as an equal in their chat - they are honest in their thoughts about the danger coming. It's a humanising moment for them both. But that's to be expected of the badass cinnamon rolls.

STS: where do you like to do your writing? If you could give your younger self advice about writing, what would it be?

Avatar

Thank you for the ask! ^-^

I like to write at home. I used to write at school on paper but writing on paper has become tedious and too sloppy. During Nano, I used my phone a lot to up the word count but I focus best at home.

I’d advise myself to write down everything and not delete anything. Also, write in my own language. My worldbuilding, character names, etc. are from my language but I write in English so a lot of jokes and references are lost because of it.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! Is there things you're scared people might misinterpret your story? if so what (if it's not too much of a spoiler)

Thanks for the ask! Oof there is one thing: Magnilla.

See, her background is formed on the question of what a character nursed in a controlled propaganda cult and culture would look like. Most of the examples I drew from are the ugly Christian ones in the states. To be fair to Christianity, there are way more non-cult groups than cult ones. But it is about as awful as you can imagine. The biggest fear is that people will auto equate her to me hating the religion. I don't, and the balance is that Zercey is Catholic. I just think we need to own up and address the toxicity of hate groups who use religion as a device to hurt others. If people are offended by Magnilla, I want them to stop and consider why they think she's wrong and then actively work to end that toxicity in society.

I could have opted to not have her be in a Christian cult, but I fear more than the point would be lost than the hate mail I'm going to get. In the end, I want people to think about why it is wrong to be so extreme with faith. Magnilla is just one.

1. Where’s your favourite place to write? (bedroom, coffee shop, study, etc.) I write at the kitchen table because it’s close to the snacks and kettle lool 2. Do you have any writing habits you’re trying to shake? Passive voice. It’s way too easy to write that way and then in editing I have to change it all around. 3. If you could spend one whole day with one of your characters, who would it be and what would you do with them? I wouldn’t spend time with my ocs. I’ve done horrible things to them and they’d justifiably murder me lool 4. Do you have any pre-writing rituals or habits? (lighting some candles, showering, etc.) Coffee. Take my watch off. Put my writing gloves on — poor circulation — phone on silent. Sometimes a snack — depends how the diet is going. 5. What’s your favourite genre of book and is it the same as your current wip? Why or why not? Romance. Doesn’t matter if it hides in another genre I like me some fluff. I always have fluff in my wips because the world is too damn awful, so let’s have some fluff.

6. What’s the hardest part of creating a character for you? Everything. Making character sheets and thinking up the info for each section is so hard for me! I just don’t work that way. I get characters by writing scenes and seeing who shows up to play and then grabbing them and asking questions until they tell me to fuck off lool 7. Do you live by a motto or quote? Be better. Basically, just don’t be an asshole to people because you don’t agree with their values or whatever it is you’ve taken imaginary offence at. Be better. 8. What are your favourite relationship tropes in fiction? Brotp and derp love. Who doesn’t love two friends who love and respect each other? Who isn’t rooting for a couple who are so awkward crushing on each other you just wanna grab hold and smoosh them together?! 9. Was there something in particular that inspired your current wip? (a piece of art, a song, a scene in a film, etc.) When I was writing Frozen Flame there was a scene when the group had to make a dangerous trip past the enemy with too many people and too few horses. Things went wrong, but it gave Nyima a dramatic entrance and it was fun to write. I had this song on autoplay until I finished writing it. 10. What was the last book you finished reading? Crazy for you by Jennifer Crusie. It’s pretty dated, but I like the themes in it and it’s good reference material. It also reminds me that traditional publishing was way more relaxed on all the stuff they now claim is awful. 11. Have you ever dreamt of your OCs? If so, what was it about? I don’t sleep well so when I do I can’t remember my dreams. I do get them having random conversations right before I drop off, which I say to myself I should write down because they’re funny af but then I go to sleep and it’s lost forever. My questions

1. Who is your favourite oc? 2. What themes do you struggle writing? 3. What’s been the best thing about writing your wip? 4. What themes has your favourite story included? 5. What time of day do you prefer writing? 6. What’s your favourite relationship trope to write? 7. What detail about your ocs has surprised you? 8. Thoughts on including romance in other genres? 9. Favourite writing snack? 10. Favourite villain trope? 11. Best scene you’ve written?
