Listen, “asshole with a heart of gold” is a good trope but you know what we need more than that???

Dumbass with a heart of gold. Just, a complete moron who cares a whole fucking lot. An idiot who would die for a stranger. A goddamn dimwit so fucking in love with someone that they’d do anything for ‘em.

One of the best tropes is when the main characters have already gone through hell and back like thirty-six times and suddenly there's a new character in the story who gets a small taste of whatever the main plot's about and they go "you wouldn't believe me if I told you" and our heroes exchange one quick, knowing glance before:

"Try us"

Showstopping, spectacular-

remember: the ‘holy’ white doves are just white rock doves, aka the common pigeon!

Doves are just pigeons with white privilege

Also can we talk about how STUNNING their irredentist feathers are?

This post made me finally look up whether Australian crested pigeons are also doves, and I didn’t quite understand the wiki page but I think the answer is ‘yes’.

You guys are gonna go ham when you hear about fruit doves

Jesse, you’re forgetting that Dragons are not just beasts, they are inherently magical and they are of the element they embody, Jesse. An ancient white dragon would create an icy tundra wherever it built its lair merely by existing in that place over time. It is the surrounding animals that have adapted to the cold to even exist in the landscape of a dragon, Jesse.

Our man Jesse has clearly see things and been places. He isn't wrong. Even if it's not necessarily the dragons you have to worry about. Going to a cold region packing ice for defence is asking for trouble.

What's your thoughts on printing a novel but every page is an inwards spiral to the centre of the page and there is just random font sizing for when there's drama

my thoughts are that it fuckin RULES

for real I'm so into novels that do funky stuff with formatting n play around with font size and direction, I adore them :D when novels are also just??! visual art as well?? fantastic! one of my favourite things!!

my only concern would be if it's still easy to read, particularly if it's every page..... something like this has the potential to become overwhelming and A Bit Much if it's not done well...... where reading it might become a bit of a chore after a while.....

but ye generally speaking? this stuff is a lot of fun to me and has such interesting potential, for like, tying in what's happening on the page into a visual sense as well, idk, it's just Good. it's not everyone's cup of tea but I personally love it c:

what you're talking about is house of leaves and it's a whole trip

not going to. lie, I own it and I also have yet to fully read it and only intend to read one storyline. I keep flipping through and reading miscellaneous pieces out of order for the Vibes

Pro-writing tip: if your story doesn't need a number, don't put a fucking number in it.

Nothing, I mean nothing, activates reader pedantry like a number.

I have seen it a thousand times in writing workshops. People just can't resist nitpicking a number. For example, "This scifi story takes place 200 years in the future and they have faster than light travel because it's plot convenient," will immediately drag every armchair scientist out of the woodwork to say why there's no way that technology would exist in only 200 years.

Dates, ages, math, spans of time, I don't know what it is but the second a specific number shows up, your reader is thinking, and they're thinking critically but it's about whether that information is correct. They are now doing the math and have gone off drawing conclusions and getting distracted from your story or worse, putting it down entirely because umm, that sword could not have existed in that Medieval year, or this character couldn't be this old because it means they were an infant when this other story event happened that they're supposed to know about, or these two events now overlap in the timeline, or... etc etc etc.

Unless you are 1000% certain that a specific number is adding to your narrative, and you know rock-solid, backwards and forwards that the information attached to that number is correct and consistent throughout the entire story, do yourself a favor, and don't bring that evil down upon your head.

Editor here. Can confirm.

"Two centuries later" just triggers a mental note to check if timing is consistent throughout the book, because it may mean more time jumps are ahead. "200 years later", or heaven forbid, "201 years later" will have me draw up a time line. The more specific the number, the more critical people become.

Strange phenomenon. Well spotted, OP.

Things I wish I’d known.

Happy Year Turning!

In Illthdar, there are several holidays. Some unique to the planet that logic and reason forgot, some less so. In Guardians of Las, the characters experience Solstice - a three day non stop event. After Solstice comes Year Turning, which is the equivalent of our New Year's Eve and day.

Now, in the city of Las, with the dominant religion being crystal worshippers, most people pilgrimage to the Order of Mana to pay a visit to the giant yellow crystal they protect - called Vvekw.

Why is it called Vvekw and not Mana? Well Mana is the name of the goddess said to have made the planet and everything on it. Vvekw is just one of a few special "children" of the goddess and acts as her representative for the island.

Other things people will do is have their fortunes told by one or more of the many types of fortune tellers who set up shop in the market at this time of the year. One of the most popular is tarot card reading in a format called Arianrhod's Wheel - a spread with three cards for each quarter of the year and a lone card in the centre to represent the querent.

As the year progresses, I'll post information on each of the holidays in the Illthdarian calendar. The next one is Twelve Nights.

The first book in the Illthdar series, Guardians of Las, is out now:

The second book, Into The North, is anticipated to be released in 2021

Rosemary? You mean spicy pine needles?

Are you insinuating that regular pine needles aren't spicy???

Regular pine needles are regular

Not by rosemary standards

...Have you eaten pine needles?

We've been friends for like four years, do you seriously have to ask if I've eaten pine needles or not

I mean I’m pretty sure you have but I don’t want to assume

Of course I've eaten pine needles. Various kinds. Singleleaf pinyon is weirdly the best

Are they...

spicy?

You know, I'd love to tell you but I'm pretty unclear about what marks the difference between "spice" and "strong-tasting plant that isn't considered a spice"

I’ll have to eat some pine needles myself then to find out

Ok but it only counts if they're PINE needles and not just any old needle-like leaf off a tree

I’m going to eat every needle-like leaf I see

Please Don't Do That

Needle-Like Leaf Roulette

...I'll accept this plan as long as you promise not to eat any yew leaves.

I can try very hard not to

Pine needles are distinguished by the presence of a sheath-like structure at the base of the leaf, almost always holding bundles of two or more leaves. Yews don't have the sheath thing

It’s time for me to go out into the woods and stare at needle leaves

Finally you can gain real insight into my average daily life

this conversation reads like two shakespeare characters who come out in the middle of the play to talk about something completely unrelated for comic relief and then are never heard from again

Okay, but full stop, that’s some serious advice for people who want to start randomly eating needle leaves. Yews are goddamned trees of nightmares. Literally. Every part of the tree is poisonous. Don’t eat anything off of a yew tree.

Happy Storyteller Saturday. Feel free to ignore this ask if you find it inappropriate, but my question is that if you have OC's who experience a period, how do they deal with it? I've always been curious, especially in regards to fantasy stories. You never see it discussed. Thank you and have an awesome weekend!

Thanks for the ask!

Absolutely there are characters that get periods in the Illthdar series. It isn't really addressed in the first book, but it's a featured situation in the second book, Into the North.

Zercey has irregular periods but Vyxen has undiagnosed endometriosis so her periods are not fun.

As for how they deal, it's with cloth pads that bleed through if they aren't changed in a timely manner, plant remedies for pain, hot water baths and hot packs.

Thanks for the tag! Sorry about the delay.

So lately I've been flipping between listening to Britney Spears and the not-quite-finished soundtrack for the second Illthdar book: Into the North.

I'll spare you guys Britney, but here's the soundtrack in progress. Note, I update it occasionally, as it's not quite right yet.
