Summer Study Goals

I decided this time to combine the goals I had for July + August into one schedule since the intended timeline is until the week the JLPT results should be posted. My impression after the test is that I need to build a stronger vocabulary more than anything else. Here's what I'll be working on for the next 6 weeks:

  1. Finish the first round of Kanji in Context. I had gotten to around ~1500 some months ago but stopped progressing in order to focus more on grammar. My grammar has improved a lot, so now it's time to go back to kanji + vocabulary.
  2. Go through 1-2/3 of my vocabulary books. One of them I plan to finish and the other I will see how far I can go. I have an unfortunate tendency to want to rush when it comes to learning new vocabulary since I have a fairly strong short term memory, but I've come up with some strategies to get myself to slow down and really learn the words I'm studying. Therefore, I'm not going to push myself to finish both books.
  3. Work my way through the TRY! N2 grammar book. I finished my previous grammar book and moved on to the next one that I had, however I realized that because my vocabulary is rather weak I would end up spending most of my grammar study time looking up all the words I didn't know in the example sentences instead of actually studying the grammar. I happened to watch @ihayachii's video here on the N2/N1 books they used to study (thank you very much for that! I found the video very useful) and thought this book would be a good bridge to the grammar book that I will finish (eventually).
  4. Read 2-3 more books. The books I've chosen this time are:

吉本ばななの 「N.P.」

小川洋子の 「妊娠カレンダー」

(できれば) 川上弘美の 「このあたりの人たち」

Depending on how the novel reading goes for the next several months, I may return to 海 in September for a second try.

I took JLPT N2 last Sunday and it was really horrible TwT. I thought I had studied enough to pass but damn the listening and vocab section destroyed all my hope. So, I decided to study harder again for the December or NAT test in October.

JLPT Study Update

I finished my two textbooks just in time! Here's to hoping I'll never have to open them again after tomorrow lol. I'm so looking forward to reading my own books again..!

Now on to the mock test and then the exam tomorrow in the afternoon. Good luck to everyone taking the JLPT this year! We can do it ლ(╹◡╹ლ)

one of my students shared this cool website where you can drill yourself on japanese conjugations: link

i looked at it myself and you can mess with options to choose if you want verbs, adjectives, which conjugations you want to practice, if you want furigana, etc. there's a bunch of stuff

Honestly I'm mad at myself for not doing this recording off Youtube/shadowing thing earlier, this is a much more efficient way to learn grammar, vocab and natural speech than just watching a video, writing some notes, pinning them around the house and then ignoring them because I have ADHD and they become background noise within 10 minutes.

Like I definitely get some weird looks when I'm just there in like the supermarket repeating shit like "I couldn't help but laugh because my boss farted" and "it's getting dark, so let's go home" and "if you don't mind, let's exchange contact details" slowly to myself while like staring at cartons of pineapple but also I'm pretty confident I can use those sentence patterns without trouble now. And if I forget them I can just put them on repeat while I walk to the konbini instead of trying to find the time to sit down and rewatch a video.

weird question, but does anyone have any advice on how to think of things to talk about when you're trying to learn a new language? I'm trying to get better at Japanese by posting on HelloTalk everyday, but I've fallen behind because I just can't think of anything to post about? I'm pretty boring lol Does anyone else have this problem??

Depending on your level the website J.Test今月の話題 could be a handy resource for you: https://j-test.jp/wadai

Each month they publish texts on a different topic in simple Japanese. The first text is aimed at beginner to lower intermediate learners and is slightly shorter. The second text is for intermediate to advanced learners and is slightly longer.

These are the texts for February 2024, with a text on stamps and postage for beginners and a text on artificial intelligence for intermediate readers, both of which list vocabulary the reader may not be familiar with on the right side, so you can study the words in advance.

At the end of each section there are not only the reading comprehension quizzes you see in the pictures, but also discussion questions, for example: "あなたは、生成 AI を活用することに対して、どう思いますか。" = "What do you think of the use of generative AI?". So this resource gives you information on various topics in Japanese, the vocabulary you need to talk about them, and prompts to channel your thoughts all in one. It's completely free, and although there's usually a bit of a delay with the uploads each month, I can really recommend it!

Aren’t languages just wonderful?

You get to witness the lives of the people of other nations - their music, their television, their poetry, their fashion, cuisine, stories, art, the things that make these people excited, what is beloved and what is despised.

Its true when they say languages are “a door to another world.” You discover how people from far away lands talk to their loved ones, how they describe objects, what they see in the world, what these people do on rainy days and the way birthdays are celebrated.

To learn a language is a gift to the self.
