About to drive home from college for the weekend and listen to Beyond Beyond Beyond on the way. I’ll let you all know what I think when I get home.

Ouuuuuuggghh /pos

Okay I’m just gonna list every song and put my thoughts on each one

Scars

  • Already heard it when it was released as a single
  • Really good, really relatable
  • Music video goes hard fr

Bitter Medicine

  • Another pre-album single
  • When I saw the Crane Wives in concert back in June (before this song dropped on streaming) they played this song and said it’s about Imposter Syndrome
  • Another really good relatable song

Higher Ground

  • Striking line: “From where I'm standing, I can't get a line of sight on the future. Should I head for higher ground?”
  • From the FIRST line this song hit me in the fucking gut dude oughhh
  • Probably the second most relatable song on this album for me personally

Predator

  • And this is the song on this album that I relate to the most
  • Did The Crane Wives read my fucking mind and write this song about my ex whaaaaaat who said that
  • Striking lines: “I’m afraid to say no to you” “my heart is a changing shape” “you took advantage of another anxious people pleaser”

Say It

  • Good song but didn’t stick with me, don’t have much to say on it

Mad Dog

  • One of the catchiest songs on the album
  • An “anti-capitalist jam” according to Kate and yeah it slaps
  • Really good song, an earworm for sure

Arcturus Beaming

  • The first pre-album single that dropped
  • Makes me cry almost every time I hear it
  • Really moving song that I think a lot of people relate to
  • Where the title of the album comes from!
  • Striking lines: “Do you wonder who's looking back? Another life-form on some undiscovered planet A mirror image of us here, but they're pointing up at our sun and Asking themselves What exists beyond, beyond, beyond, beyond?” “There’s more to life than suffering. But there’s still time, it’s not too late, nothing will change until I change.”
  • I think I want to put “what exists beyond beyond beyond?” on my graduation cap in the spring
  • Incredible song

Time Will Change You

  • Oooooogghh this one kinda hurts
  • Yeah idk I’m like kinda scared of change and time passing me by but also I want to change
  • Striking lines: “If it won't grow then let it stay behind” “Let go of what won't grow with you”
  • ^^^those lines feel really hopeful and make this song like not depressing for me
  • I guess I would call this a “moral” song that reminds me of “Turn Out the Lights”
  • Great song

Black Hole Fantasy

  • Oooooooooh boy this song, this fucking song man
  • I think this is my favorite song on the album and maybe one of my favorite Crane Wives songs now
  • There are other songs that I like relate to more than this one but this song REALLY stuck out to me
  • This song felt so different from all the others but in a good way
  • This song felt really personal
  • Also I think this song kinda stuck out because it kinda has like…an easy to comprehend storyline? Like usually Crane Wives songs have like kinda vague stories if they have stories at all, they’re usually not this detailed on a beginning middle and end
  • Also this song is 6 minutes?! With like 2 minutes of pure instrumental at the end? Iconic honestly
  • Just a really striking memorable song that’s going to stick with me for a few days I think

Red Clay

  • They let Dan sing a main part!!! It really caught me off guard but he did really well!
  • Pretty good song, need to think more about it to kinda figure it out

River Rushing

  • Another really catchy earworm song
  • Really fun, upbeat song
  • Striking line: “whenever you’re ready” (from a music point of view, it seems like they used an accidental note in this line and it sticks out but it sounds good!)
  • Great way to end the album!

I actually do not have a single negative thing to say about this album. Yeah some of the songs hit me harder than others but it was all really good! I LOVED it! I don’t listen to a lot of full albums and The Crane Wives are my favorite band ever so I think this is my favorite album now. It was very much worth the wait!

My Child Lebensborn review/thoughts/rambles

So the other day, I played a game called My Child Lebensborn and I just have a lot of thoughts and feelings about it. It’s kinda intense with its themes and story (TW below) so if you’re in a good headspace right now, I really think that you should play it or watch a let’s play on YouTube. It’s like 4-5 hours long. The game is on most consoles as well as android and iOS. It costs $3 and a part of that goes to the Children Born of War Project so while I’m usually pro-piracy, this is one game that I really think you should not pirate. I played the iOS version which you can download here.

The game is described as a “dark tamagotchi” where you play a struggling single parent in 1951-1952 Norway and care for your young adoptive child (either the male Klaus or female Karin, you choose). Klaus/Karin is a “Lebensborn,” an Aryan child born out of wedlock of a German soldier and a Norwegian woman during the occupation of Norway in WWII. You have to balance caring for the child both mentally and physically, work, investigating the child’s origins, and keeping up with local news. A lot happens to the child over the course of the game that you can’t do anything to prevent, you can only impact how the child sees the situation and how they may react to it. It’s a really good and educational game about an aspect of war that I wasn’t really familiar with until now and while it’s not really the most “fun,” it’s a very fulfilling and engaging experience.

The story is basically entirely told through text and mostly happens to the child outside of the home so most of the disturbing stuff happens off-screen but it’s still heavily referred to and feels like a punch to the gut.

If you have a hard stomach and think you can handle it, stop reading this post now and go play it as I’m about to give trigger warnings that could spoil the game and then go into my personal thoughts about it.

Trigger warning for: references to war, bullying, assault, poverty, abandonment, references to Nazism, attempted murder, being forcibly tied up, being urinated on, ethnic discrimination, cruel family members, cruel teachers, and child sexual assault.
