Please save Wincon! (Let me help you do it!)
Hi tumblr friends,
I’ve reblogged a LOT of stuff about Wincon in the last couple of months because we’re running an Indiegogo campaign to try and fund this year’s con. At this point, this campaign has two days left, and we need $5000, so I figure I should tell you about me and Wincon.
I went to Wincon for the first time in 2008 because my girlfriend at the time, ciaan on LJ, bought me a ticket for my birthday (Wincon makes a GREAT birthday present!). She had gone to the very first Wincon, and loved it, and met a ton of great people, but she was going to be one of only two people I knew there, and I was afraid I’d basically just sit in a corner by myself all weekend.
I’m not super good at making friends on the internet. I don’t know how to approach people, so I basically wait for them to come to me. But I’m pretty fun in real life, and there’s nothing I love more than hanging out with fanpeople and talking about what we love and why we love it. And at my first Wincon, I got to do SO MUCH OF THAT. I got to talk about canon and fanon and fic and kink and see other people’s eyes light up in recognition. People I’d never met before recced me fic and made me laugh until I cried. It was amazing.
I met some really, really amazing people, people who have had a massive impact on my real life since then. Like dazy-laze, who found me a place to stay when my job sent me to a foreign country. Like affectingly and Wendy, who invited me to visit when I desperately needed a weekend away in 2012. Like psycholinguistic, whom I see every day and who may be my favorite person in the whole wide world. And like river-b, whose couch I cried on for a week when the person who bought me my first Wincon ticket died in 2013.
Which brings me to my point. Friends, let me offer you The Ciaan Memorial Wincon Scholarship Fund. I will buy Wincon registrations for up to four people who message me before the close of the IndieGoGo campaign, in honor of the person who took me to my first Wincon. Because Wincon is great, and fandom only gets better when your fandom friends are your friends in real life too. <3
If you want to learn more, or contribute yourselves, the campaign is here. Don’t wait, guys! This is our last chance!
