“I spent a long time when I left drama school sort of not being able to take anything I did seriously and having to do a kind of self-deprecation thing and say, ‘Oh, I’m doing this play but it’s not very good’ and all this. And my friend said to me, ‘you know, you can take what you do seriously and not take yourself seriously. They’re different things.’ I think I thought that people would laugh at me if I was ever honest about striving and trying hard in something.”
