the first episode/chapter of dandadan has sexual assault scenes, and while nothing past that point is as intense as that first scene, sexual assault does NOT go away. on top of that, there is non-sexual nudity of teenagers, there are jokes about okarun's balls throughout the whole manga, there broadly seem to be themes/discussion of violating bodily autonomy - if those things make you uncomfortable, i suggest either bracing yourself or checking something else out

One of the most interesting details in The Substance to me, that I don't see anyone talking about is that the person who introduces Elizabeth to the Substance program, the person who pulls her into a living nightmare under the pretence of helping her, was not only a man, but one also using the substance and hating it too. To me this felt like a really smart way to acknowledge that yes, men are absolutely affected by unfair body standards to some degree, but those same men are more likely to be apathetic to the issues women face and enforce those same body standards they pretend to care about.

but but but also! it was the young half of him that told her about it. the version that's like 'my life is so much better now as this young hot doctor' which reads to me that he sees her crying and old and pathetic and he PITIES HER.

then later when the old version of him talks to her he pities her again. but BECAUSE she's using the substance now. and he know/feels how awful it is to be the old half on the substance.

also relevant gender comparison that while the old man feels insignificant compared to his younger self, the younger self is NOT abusing the substance. the desperation he feels must be different somehow. (we see no visible signs of decay on the old man, but more specifically he references the week feeling so long. so he is just being old-him week on/week off). but he does have the same resignation to allowing his younger self to live his life. the same way elisabeth doesnt end the experience when sue first starts abusing the system, because she wants sue to be able to live her life. she is nothing without her. and the old man hates his weeks, but he isnt gonna take the young weeks away, because he's nothing - only young him is something.

im still thinking about the substance because yes it is about the beauty standards women face, but i think it could also b interpreted as a metaphor for mother daughter relationships. sue is literally made from her. the huge scar on her back. the scene where elisabeth is watching the interview and screaming abt how sues beauty secret is her and she gets it from her. like yes in a very literal sense she gets it from her but also she came from elisabeth, she gets it from her, she gets it from her!!!! the growing resentment between BOTH of them. elisabeth for sue doing all the things she feels she cant at her age, taking the opportunities that were once presented to her. sue for holding her back, for constantly having to come back, for being old. remember you are one because yes you are the same person but also this is your mom and htis is your daughter and this is your future and this is your past. am i reading too much into this probably idk but damn. this movie fucks

It's always disappointing when a series makes a big deal about societal and structural problems in it's setting, making readers think it has interesting things to say about the subject, only to then resolve the problems by fighting The CEO of Racism, John Racist, so that all of society's problems would then get better because they promoted a new CEO.
