Distinguishing characters through fashion: how Sailor Moon does it right.
OKAY, so I was wondering whether I could find some place that posted Sailor Moon screencaps or turnaround sheets so I could write about how it handles fashion, and it turns out there’s a website for exactly that. Tagged by character and everything. Perfect.
So let’s continue our discussion about fashion as character design! Here’s a narrative that has to balance a large, female-heavy cast and make sure they are identifiable at all times, especially since they aren’t in their trademark color-coded uniforms most of the time. How does Sailor Moon tackle fashion and make it work in service of their characters?
What’s particularly impressive is that the superheroes’ civilian clothes aren’t limited to a single color, the way you might see in, say, Power Rangers. (Could you imagine wearing yellow outfits every day for the rest of your life just because you’re the Yellow Ranger? Blugh.) Instead, Sailor Scouts are recognizable in their civilian clothes because each one has a distinct silhouette, style, and palette.
Sailor Moon’s civilian wear, for example, is overly childish and girly. She wears ribbons, bows, and overalls. Her clothes have cartoon mascots on them, particularly bunnies (a pun on her Japanese name, Usagi, which means “rabbit.”)They match her ditzy, immature personality.
Mercury’s modest skirts and pastel cardigans match her quiet, straight-laced character, while Mars wears shorter, sleeker, more ladylike outfits that reflects her more sassy (and bossy) personality. Venus is all about bright colors and loose, sporty dresses ‘cause she’s got such a peppy, can-do attitude.
Jupiter is easy to distinguish from the others just by being taller and more physically imposing. I love the way they handle Jupiter’s style because she’s portrayed as a gentle, feminine girl who is still undeniably “the muscle” of the group. Her clothes are girly (frills! pencil skirts!) but they’re cut to accentuate her fuller figure and keep her looking large and powerful. I love that.
A lot of the characters’ fashions work well in pairs to contrast and work off of each other. Mini-Moon’s pink, blue, and candy-stripe-red palette doesn’t pop quite so much until she’s juxtaposed with her friend Hotaru, who dresses in black and dull monochromes. What’s more, as their friendship grows, you can see Hotaru start accenting her dark outfits with a single bright color.
And, of course, Uranus and Neptune’s amazing butch/femme combo.
Look at those classy broads.
More deconstruction of Sailor Moon’s character designs.
A bit of Moby-Dick oceanography context:
Up until the mid 1870s, it was generally accepted that life could not exist below a depth of 550 meters. This is why some of Ishmael's whale theories are so off and why Ahab pictures the sea floor as a vast wasteland of bones and shipwrecks. 🌊
I mean. Can you blame them
Oh here it is!!!! The most unsettling thing Ahab/Ishmael might’ve believed about the deep sea

On twitter I’m seeing dozens of threads from Black activists warning people against burnout, giving all sorts of useful tips about preventing and managing it for the sake of a long-term, sustainable effort.
On tumblr I’m seeing a hell of a lot of young white kids yelling at anyone who actually follows those steps, and acting like burnout is a moral falling rather than a well-proven psychological phenomenon.
Be careful who you get your information from. Don’t let guilt lead you to make choices that will harm both you and the movement.
I’m going to reblog this again since I see more individuals are inquiring about burnout prevention tips in the notes and it’s why I sought out this resource. I hope it helps you!

Preventing burnout. Keeping the movement alive.
What is burnout? Burnout is the experience of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion often caused by longterm involvement in emotionally demanding situations.
Effects of burnout on a movement. In a 2015 study it was observed that roughly half of activists who experienced burnout did not take a break or hiatus. Instead, they ended up leaving the movement for good.
Why is burnout common among activists? Research has highlighted burnout among activists is usually caused by the setting of unrealistically high standards for oneself. Activists commonly feel the weight of the world upon their shoulders, with a heightened sense of accountability, empathy, and guilt.
Tips to fight burnout. 1. Identify your feelings. Symptoms of burnout can include:
- Anxiety
- Guilt
- Isolation
- Irritability
- Anger
- Sadness
- Pessimism
- Disappointment
- Numbness
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Lack of motivation
- Physical pain/sickness
2. Talk to a trusted confidant. Whether a therapist or a friend, sometimes taking the opportunity to let out your thoughts and feelings with someone who understands us can alleviate stress, or point us in a direction we may not have yet considered.
3. Find healthy outlets. Work on a coping bank, a go-to list of activities and behaviors that give you a sense of fulfillment, relief, and replenishment when you’re feeling burnout.
4. Learn when to step back. While your voice is valuable, know that many others are willing to carry on the work you have done, until you’re ready to step back in.

I'm a native queer in the USA who lives with my trans gf.
I'm also disabled and too broke to move somewhere else, let alone out of the country so if you've been using marginalized people like me to justify how you voted then here is my payment info.
Please use it to help you attain the goal of actually, materially helping marginalized people. specifically you would be helping my trans gf afford her doctors appointment and helping us pay bills which we can't afford on one income even in 'affordable' housing.

She made it to the appointment and was able to put a down payment on her new glasses!
Hey so listen, I've been using WiFi and apps to text/call since like 2020 when I stopped being able to work because, as mentioned, I'm disabled and me and my gf are already struggling.
BUT recently found an Incredibly cheap way to get me a phone line that we could probably squeeze into our budget HOWEVER, switching to the service would cost exactly $119.
This would allow me to use Signal, the end to end encrypted messaging app since it requires a phone number to use it
And Signal is about to become Very Important for me to have as a leftist queer native who's privacy and actions are about to be hyper surveilled under Trump even in a blue state.
Pls help me get a phone line ~~

The Sense of Distance: Japan versus the American Midwest
JoJo’s seventh story arc, Steel Ball Run, involves a race across America, but I knew that undertaking that journey by myself in one single trip would have been impossible. Instead, I split up the research into three sections: from the West Coast to the deserts, from the Great Plains to the Mississippi River and Chicago, and to the finish line in New York. Each region possesses its own culture and is home to different types of people.
Without going there for yourself, it’s impossible to comprehend the feeling of scale of the midwestern United States, where the scenery stretches on forever and unchanging. The feeling of distance there is nothing like Japan. Say, for example, an enemy is approaching from afar – at such a distance that escape would be trivial in Japan. In the Midwest, the open landscape remains identical from one hour to the next, and I was struck by the real sense that I could never make an escape from such an adversary; there was simply nowhere to hide. I was able to put that experience to good use when it came time to draw the manga.
Travel there is mostly done by car. When you drive across those vast plains, the scenery is mostly devoid of any ups and downs, and is dotted only by the occasional town with nothing to claim but chain stores, seemingly little to provide amusement aside from watching movies, and you hardly ever see anyone else about. Rather than inspire thoughts of enjoying nature, it felt empty and lifeless and made me wonder if there was any fun to living there at all. A kind of atmosphere hung over these places that felt rich for suspense.

Hello world, my name is Lara Al-Sharafa
I am 20 years old, I am studying engineering in my third year at university, I decided to help my family and organize this campaign for me and for my family of 8 (me, my mother, my father and 5 daughters) I am from northern Gaza, now I am displaced with my family in a small tent in Al-Zawaida, we were displaced with only our clothes, without anything .....
In December, the occupation completely destroyed our house in and now we are homeless and without any possessions, it destroyed our memories, destroyed our dreams, destroyed our future, this house is what brought us together, and now we are scattered...
us together, and now we are scattered...
Please Help us...🥺🙏
We do not have a brother to help us support the family, and my father is sick and cannot do anything, and we do not have a source of income because my father worked daily, my sisters and I do everything, so I decided to support my family and organize this campaign ....
☆ Now, I find myself in a situation where I must humbly ask for your support for me and my family, to provide them with food And clothes because our clothes are worn out, and getting the most basic necessities of life that the occupation has prevented us from.....
☆ Every donation, no matter how small, will make a huge difference in helping us rebuild our lives and provide the necessities for my family.
We are in a fragile situation, your support during these extremely difficult times will give us hope in the midst of despair. Your generosity will not only help us get food and the necessities of life again, but will also restore our faith in the kindness of humanity

Final Pre-Election 2024 Anti-Trans Risk Assessment Map
Erin Reed has presented a new version of her Anti-Trans Risk Assessment Map over at Erin in the Morning.
She writes:
The elections have tightened across the United States, and anti-trans ads have become a major part of the 2024 campaign cycle. As such, the risk has substantially raised for nationwide laws targeting transgender people in the coming years for both youth and adults. For states, the state of Texas has been upgraded to Do Not Travel, only the second state to receive such a recommendation. This comes as Odessa, Texas becomes the first city in the nation to pass a $10,000 bounty on transgender people inside of bathrooms.
