Seeing how many monsters in the Oilwell Basin are pretty large makes me wonder like what the possibile food chain is like. Like I know oil in our world is liquefied plankton fossils but in the MH world I wonder if the oil we see could be like millions of tiny invertebrates

Avatar

Well if it wasn’t actually made of crude oil then it probably wouldn’t be extremely flammable, but it definitely can form the basis of an ecosystem. Plenty of bacteria and fungi can easily consume petroleum and hydrocarbons, so it might be that instead of plants forming the basis of the ecosystem in the oilwell basin, bacteria and fungi are the primary producers.

I feel Rompopolo is weird because it's probably the brute Wyvern that really went for the insectivore niche, probably more so than Barroth. Like the long Claw reminds me of the middle Claw of the Aye Aye, the long but wide beak gives me Bee catcher vibes, but the fatty body is throwing me off. But in short Rompopolo looks like they took traits of every insectivore they knew off

Avatar

The long claw is definitely good for digging around in wood and crevasses for bugs, but the beak and long tongue are too.

Their ancestors probably lived like alvarezsaurs or woodpeckers, poking through wood and shoving their beak into the opening to slurp up entire insect colonies. It might have even used its poison gas to knock out its food first. But eventually they came to the oilwell basin and started preying on creatures stuck in the oil like the petroleum fly.

I don't know why but seeing how we have an Octopus in MH Wilds makes me wonder if it'll use some of the notable things Octopuses(Octopi?) are known for, their brains. Because it would be cool if it like grabs rocks for sheilds or like makes its own weapons

Avatar

We got tool use in the cuttlefish nakarkos so I’m wondering if we’ll get something similar here too. Maybe it’ll throw around other large monsters at us.

Avatar

One thing I wonder about the Monsterverse is why people, in universe, hate the titans so much?

Avatar

I mean… the average American already wishes for the eradication of any animal that doesn’t directly benefit them or conventionally look cute.

So it’s not much of a stretch to assume that most people would want to kill an animal that can accidentally destroy your home and ruin your life even if it’s not their intention.

Avatar

So if Capcom emailed you to design three new monsters for a new monster hunter game what type of monster would you make and what would they be like?

Avatar

I mean just saying “make anything you want” would kinda put me on the spot. They’d need to present certain guidelines for what they want, and I’m always the most innovative under restrictions.

That said if I did get free reign then here’s three

One would be an endemic life flagship that’s basically my hypothesized parave flying wyvern ancestor or even bird and flying wyvern ancestor.

Another would be a very high tier herbivore monster, like elder dragon level danger.

I’m stumped for what I’d do for a third one but maybe a macroraptorial sperm whale? Whales exist in monhun and they’re referred to as arluq.

In all honesty though I’d probably just make endemic life.

I’d also strangle whoever is designing the wings of birds in these games

So if there was an island that no big main monsters(ex Raths, Tigrex, that kinda stuff) settled what do you think you'd see? Because I had an idea for an island that is sort of like the Galapagos islands where the big monsters that populate it are actually monsters that evolved without the competition of the monsters on the mainland and oceans.

Like a Marine Jagras that fills the role of a Leviathan, a Remobras that evolved into Amphipetre like monster, like the possibilities are endless

Avatar

That would be pretty cool, and world did a sort of similar thing where a lot of the bird Wyvern niches were filled by fanged wyverns.

But certain monsters will show up just because they have a worldwide distribution.

Raths will most likely nest there and assert themselves as an apex predator, Bazelgeuse might use it as a resting zone during its overseas flights and assert itself as the top scavenger, Deviljho will show up somehow, etc…

But other than that yeah the possibilities are pretty vast. But keep in mind island dwarfism and gigantism, so maybe this hypothetical island has a species of dwarf Aptonoth and something else takes up the niche of large herbivore.

Avatar

So I had a fun idea on how Male Gammoths may fight, considering Gammoths both have tusks and a bony head creast here's my theory.

Males will initially flash off their tusks showing off how big they maybe in order to avoid conflict with the male with smaller tusks backing off, but if both males have equal sized tusks they'll sesort to head butting each other

Avatar

That’s probably pretty likely, and I think UHC probably thinks the same

Avatar

One thing I've been wondering in Monster hunter is that if certain monsters have a different lifespan depending on their gender, like we know that some animals the males tend to have shorter lifespans like orcas, elephant, African lions and bears due to certain challenges they face. Like I could imagine possibly Male Raths having a shorter lifespan due to the fact they have to fight off a lot of competition

Avatar

A lot of sexually dimorphic monsters probably face this.

Avatar

I feel like World Deviljho are better off than other Deviljho since they now have some big prey they can sustain themselves on, a buffet in the Rotten Vale, and humans/wyverians aren't hunting them down just beacuse

Avatar

They might actually be worse off as they seem more inbred than old world ones.

Their hyperdontia is so severe it’s basically overblown and malformed their maxilla into “lobes” that take up near 50% of their craniums and have squished back their nasal passages like a brachycephalic dog.

And if they’re doing that bad on the outside, then they’re probably barely functioning on the inside.

Avatar

Honestly I agree with UNH that the world of monster hunter went through an ice age considering some of the monsters we see either in the new world or on the various islands don't really have a way to transverse across water. Heck when I was watching one of Tea Sharks video about monster hunter trivia and tidbits, showing Deviljhos old tri model and his world model and Tri model is smaller than world model so some possible insular dwarfism.

Avatar

Yeah ice age seems likely considering the old and new world monster species and the fact that some apex predators are implied to have had predators, or were designed with adaptations that make more sense if there were once bigger monsters to fear.

Akantor’s spikes are canonically anti-predator defenses.

And there’s even remnants of monsters that don’t exist anymore like the giant tyrannosaur skull in the Jurassic frontier.

However monsters could potentially also travel between places using tunnels and cave systems subterranean monsters like shara, Giasmagorm, and Kulve dug out.

Avatar

So what are your thoughts that the reason we don't see Monoblos showing up in games is because poaching is making it endangered?

Avatar

That honestly makes the most sense but it also makes me sad.

I may prefer diablos, but monoblos is more important to the series since it was the final challenge of the story in the first game. To prove yourself worthy of the title of a Kokoto village hunter, to prove you’re worthy of being the successor of the Hero of Kokoto who was a legendary hunter who was part of the incident of the five, monoblos was the rite of passage.

Diablos was extra content.

I honestly wouldn’t bat an eye if diablos sat an entire generation out so monoblos could finally get his limelight back.
