The Five Core Precepts of the Classic Jedi Code

I. There is no emotion, there is peace

This principles guides all meditations and interactions with all others. It reaffirms the Jedi ideal to act without recklessness, and to view the actions of others through the pure lens of the Unifying Force.

II. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.

Those who don’t understand this basic precept are quick to fear––and fear is the path to the dark side. The Archives represent the greatest collection of knowledge in the galaxy.

III. There is no passion, there is serenity.

A subtle extrapolation of the first precept, this reminder to act dispassionately in every deliberation extends to personal obsessions and is a reminder not to elevate the self above the mission.

IV. There is no chaos, there is harmony.

Those who cannot see the threads uniting all life view existence as random and without purpose. The Jedi perceive the structure and will of the many galaxies.

V. There is no death, there is the Force.

All things die, but the Force lives on. As beings who exist as shades of the Force, the end of our existence in this form is not to be overly mourned. We are part of an energy larger than ourselves, and we play roles in a cosmic fabric that outstrip our incarnate understanding.

The Jedi Code

There is no emotion, there is peace.

It is not by accident that this is the first line of the code mantra. Young Padawans presented with it often think that it simply means: stay relaxed. Emotions drive most people’s lives. Anger, sadness, fear and joy all elicit predictable responses. Jedi must learn to be aware of their emotions, without having to act on them. Padawans are taught to view their emotions as their primitive side barking orders at their higher self. Most people obey these orders without thinking. Experienced Jedi learn to hold their emotions at bay.
This does not mean they are unfeeling or cold — they feel their emotions as much as any person, but they have given themselves the freedom not to be held under the power of their emotions.
WAR AND PEACE
The nature of peace is one of the core pursuits of Jedi teaching. Jedi learn that peace does not merely mean lack of noise, but a receptive state of mind. The code teaches that peace can be experienced even in the tumult of battle. Neither is peace meant here as a passive state. Rather, it is understood as active listening. Through practice in attaining this state of constant learning, Jedi are always open to new revelations and enlightening thoughts. In peace, Jedi are more able to be one with the Force.
