STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE dir. George Lucas
Phantom Menace/Jedi appreciation: I love that our introduction to the Jedi (within the prequels) is a teaching moment. Yeah, they go into a fight fairly soon after, but the very first thing that’s shown to us, the first thing Lucas felt important to show us about his characters, is how they teach/learn. Specifically in the way that the student is corrected, firmly but not harshly, he questions, gets clarification, and then accepts the reprimand gracefully. I just love that. I love that insight into the Jedi, and the fact that that was the first thing it was important to establish about them.
One of the great things about the much maligned Phantom Menace is the interaction between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. The first scene we have Qui-Gon reminding Obi-Wan to be mindful of the present. They are on a diplomatic mission not there to wield laser swords to get what they want.
There are many quiet moments without the lightsabers, blasters, and explosions because that is for the Clone Wars. The Jedi as a whole as both a society and religion is about peace with nature, with the life Force not about weapons.
You will see the grace in how they move together, as a unit to protect and defend, not acting as aggressors:
A great example is the juxtaposition of the meditative Jedi Qui-Gon and the pacing Sith Maul.
When Obi-Wan loses control (after seeing Qui-Gon stabbed by Maul) he jumps up and down and paces, which shows that potential to go Dark Side.
He ends up in a pit (symbolic of the potential fall to the Dark Side) but calms down, centers himself, and gets out of that metaphorical pit of despair.
The Jedi truly were about peace, striving for good in a complicated galaxy.
