What does Kylo Ren want? As ever, the closeups on Driver’s face are gorgeous. He is never the Easter Island statue of hardness that it is possible to misremember: he is tremulous, unsure of himself, like an unhappy teenager, and his mouth seems almost on the point of trembling with tears. There’s big personal things that I find about every character, not just in Star Wars, that you have to make as personal as possible. It’s the big joke about being an actor, that you make everything you’re doing seem like it’s life or death… The things about that character that I find painful, that I really relate to, I kind of prefer to keep to myself.

“It was such an evolving thing. I’d fly in to see what they were coming up with and see nods to Akira Kurosawa, and his jacket that bows out just a little bit, like a samurai, and all those references. Then I’d leave for two weeks and come back to see how it was shaped a little more. My only input was whether it felt good or bad. I was involved in making it functional, which was great. They were all about how they could make it more efficient and something that someone could wear. It looks great, but if you can’t move in it or breathe in it, then it doesn’t make sense for the audience or the actor.”
