If you try for one second to tell me the X-Men isn’t an allegory for the gay rights movement, I will smack you. They weren’t even remotely subtle about this.

The mutants have always been an allegory for anyone that didn’t fit in to society. The folks who drew the comics made a point of that early on.

It’s not just the gay rights movement, its not just kids trying to “come out” to their parents.  Its people being mistreated by the government, put away, forced to pretend to be “normal”, systematically oppressed, even killed for who they are because the powers that be cant control it.  It’s an allegory for blacks, gays, the disabled (mentally and physically), women, and anyone really who isnt a white man at the top of the food chain.

Fun fact: Ian McKellen worked with the screenwriters to make this scene directly parallel with kids coming out as queer to their parents. This scene was 100% meant to be an allegory for coming out.

Media—comics, film, literature, video games—exist for us to find our own meaning and value in it. Especially mutants, which are a super powerful and accessible metaphor for nearly anyone who has ever felt maligned for reasons beyond their control. Shut up.

If that hasn’t been blatantly obvious from the first issue you picked up, then I don’t know what kinda shit you’re on.

Also, fun fact, the movies show the divide between humans and mutants as an allegory for the LGBT+ civil rights movement going on now.

And, as in all civil rights movements, they have to decide: Are they going to take the Xavier line — which is to somehow assimilate and stand up for yourself and be proud of what you are, but get on with everybody — or are you going to take the alternative view — which is, if necessary, use violence to stand up for your own rights. And that’s true. I’ve come across that division within the gay rights movement.”

Just saying

Marvel has always been about seeing yourself within the characters. Spider-man even though he has super powers, has every day life problems. Making the right decisions, money issues, relationship issues, etc. etc. X-men have always been about discrimination. Whether it’s Race, gender, or sexual orientation.
