I’m so glad they made Sansa’s rape all about Theon’s feelings, you guys. So SO happy.

And please don’t start on with the “Well, at least they didn’t make it graphic! They did it that way to keep it from ending up like that!” (For one thing, you don’t find the fact that the scene before the wedding was Sansa bathing at all disturbing?)

Things they could have done:

1) Focussed on SANSA’S face (you know, the face of the who was being raped. There are parts of her body that would not risk cries of objectification.)

2) Focussed on Sansa’s face, maybe had her meet Theon’s eyes (through a mirror, or have them positioned so he’d be in her eyeline), then continue on her face. Maybe have her react to the fact that not only had this guy betrayed her brother, sacked her home, and (to her knowledge) killed her brothers, but also is standing by as she is raped. (Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Theon shouldn’t have been allowed to feel anything or react. But his tears SHOULD NOT have been the primary focus and his should NOT have been the only face we saw as Sansa Stark was being sexually assaulted.)

3) Just cut to black and let us hear the cries

4) Drawn the shot out to maybe the household of Winterfell, showing us people there reacting to the screams (reactions to Jeyne Poole’s cries were kind of a point that was brought up)

5) Cut away to afterwards, with Sansa reacting to the rape.

Just, basically, actually paying attention to the girl who was just violated and not the men surrounding her. This is after building up Sansa as being his fearless person, and having her tell Theon straight up that she doesn’t care what happens to him. (Why is that line in there?) Call me crazy, but coupled with the lines about Tyrion, it’s almost like there was some sort of judgment going on. Like, “Oh, Sansa doesn’t care about Theon’s feelings. WELL HERE YOU ARE BEING RAPED AND THEON SEEMS TO CARE! RAMSAY IS HURTING YOU, SANSA. WHERE’S ALL YOUR BRAVADO NOW? LOOK AT HIM CRY!” “OH, YOU WERE SOOO UNHAPPY WITH YOUR MARRIAGE TO PURE AND PERFECT AND GENTLE TYRION. BET YOU MISS HIM NOW, DON’T YOU?! SEEMS LIKE A FAR PREFERABLE HUSBAND NOW, HUH?” The fact that they make a point of how Sansa’s still a virgin and how that’s the lynchpin of her marriage to Ramsay and Ramsay asking her why she’s still a virgin (”Scared of dwarves?”) and her waxing on about the gentleness of Tyrion wasn’t subtle. Just, wow. “You could have been raped by the hero, you bitch. NOW GET SUPER RAPED BY THE SADIST WHILE POOR THEON, WHO YOU WERE MEAN TO, WATCHES. GUYS, LOOK AT HOW SAD THEON IS!” Because apparently this show hasn’t hammered it in enough that Theon has suffered. So we have to make him the close-up shot of Sansa’s rape. BRA. FUCKING. VO.

Sansa tried to be strong and let out some (justified) anger. And she was raped on this show, and instead of looking at HER pain and feelings, they are focussing on the feelings of someone else. They couldn’t even give her that.

Literally, the THEON POV chapters in A Game of Thrones showed far more of Jeyne Poole’s emotions during her rape than Game of Thrones has shown of Sansa’s. And JEYNE POOLE ISN’T A POV CHARACTER. THEON IS LITERALLY THE POV THERE. AND MARTIN STILL HANDLED THAT BETTER AND WAS MORE SENSITIVE TO THE ACTUAL GOD DAMN VICTIM’S FEELINGS. FUCK YOU D&D. FUCK YOU SO HARD.

Sansa being raped could have actually been about Sansa. Sansa’s pain. Sansa’s fear. Sansa’s violation. But instead they showed us Theon’s tears. Sansa was just an object to inspire pain (and probably the motivation to SAVE SANSA AND BE REDEEMED) in a male character.

We couldn’t have Arianne Martell, the woman with a birthright and sexual agency. But we did get a fourteen year old girl being raped and couldn’t even let it be about what she felt.

Applause all around.

I wish there were a Qyburn I could give the showrunners to.

I am absolutely disgusted at the closing scene tonight, Ramsay is by far the most sadistic thing to ever cross the screen of this show. Sansa a Stark has come so far and I was so happy to see her standing up for herself to Myranda. I know she’s not the most popular character but I have always loved her and whether you love her or not, no woman deserves to be raped and have her innocence taken in her own home. The fact that Ramsay made Theon watch is absolutely the most cruel thing he could have done. The utter anguish on Theon’s face said it all: Sansa Stark is his family and if anything could possibly bring him to a lower place than he already is in, it is what he had to witness.

Sansa Stark did not deserve that. Theon Greyjoy did not deserve that. Nobody deserves that.

All that being said, I have to give the utmost respect to Alfie Allen and Sophie Turner for making this scene so powerful. And I’m sending a big fuck you to Benioff and Weiss.

You’ve been running all your life. Terrible things happened to your family and you weep. You sit alone in a darkened room, mourning their fates. You’ve been a bystander to tragedy from the day they executed your father. Stop being a bystander… Stop running. There’s no justice in the world, not unless we make it.

I love how the latest got episode turned into this Sansa vs. Jeyne discussion, as if it’s a contest who deserves it the least to get tortured by Ramsay.

It’s not about that at all.

That’s not why i’m angry.

I’m angry because D&D looked at multiple chapters from Arianne Martell’s pov (powerful strong female heir of Dorne!!) and decided to skip that entire story. I’m angry because they looked at multiple chapters about Lady Stoneheart (strong powerful mother on a revenge act!!) and decided to skip that entire story. I’m angry because they found a minor plot about an underage girl being brutally raped and tortured by a psychopath and THAT’S THE STORY THEY DECIDED TO KEEP. i’m angry because, after this sin, they made the decision to give that plot to a female character who, after 4 seasons of abuse, was supposed to be in a position where she was able to gain more agency, by learning how to play the game and by making friends and feeling relatively safe while STILL being in a dangerous situation. I’m angry because they decided to do this while they were ALREADY heavily criticized for the way they treat their female characters and handle rape/nudity and abuse in the show.

but lmfao what would game of thrones be if the story actually was about its female characters becoming more powerful instead of being random plot devices for more nudity, shock effect and violence, to be moved around for the development of (often minor) male characters??!

that David Benioff even has the NERVE to say Sansa is a character he cares about ‘almost more than any other’ while they prioritize Ramsay’s story above hers honestly TERRIFIES me cause it truly shows how completely ignorant they are. and even scarier: how they don’t even CARE.
