I’ve never seen anyone point out how suspiciously close to the Jewish American Princess stereotype Gretchen Weiners from Mean Girls is. Which also makes the famous quote “That’s why her hair is so big, it’s full of secrets” kind of worrisome, too.

Her dad is apparently rich (inventor of Toaster Strudel), she’s somewhat bratty, and her Jewishness is in one throwaway line about Chanukah…

When I first watched Mean Girls (I was probably like 12 or 13), I didn't realize that the JAP stereotype was even there. When she mentioned Chanukah I was kind of pleased that Gretchen Weiners was Jewish and that it was actually mentioned in canon.

At the time, I was just glad to have some representation in film. My whole childhood it seemed that in every single movie and show I watched all the characters celebrated Christmas and pretty much the only Jewish representation I'd ever seen was on Rugrats. I didn't even register back then that Gretchen being the "JAP" character was kind of problematic...

tbh, i wish people would stop making stage versions/musicals out of movies

fucking have a creative thought for once in your life, people.

i know right i mean like ok cool, stage versions of the lion king and beauty and the beast, ok sure.  but now i’m starting to feel like every new musical is a movie.  just like every movie is from a book now

all but one musical at the tony’s last year was adapted from a movie. it’s starting to get a little pathetic. truly we can’t have told every single story thus far? this is why i hate the commercialism that theatre has become because producers won’t take a chance on something half the time because they’re hung up on money and audience sizes and money. it’s really upsetting. the same thing goes with screenwriters. they try to shove books into films, do a shoddy job of it, and don’t write anything new - which is half the reason we’re seeing so little queer/poc representation in the media.

and what bothers me the most is that they keep making musicals out of movies that aren't really musical-worthy, like Bring It On. why did that have to be a musical?

A friend of mine posted this today. I was shocked, disappointed and most of all very very angry. Not to mention confused, because I had been debating for a solid 5 hours whether to comment on it or not. I didn’t feel like starting a ‘war’ but the longer I ignored it, the angrier I got and the guiltier I felt. Because people will always continue to think like this if nobody ever tells them to stop and think for a second. Not reacting to this is giving people the power to feel like they are right and that way we’ll never put an end to this misogyny/anything else it’s called. This will probably ruin our friendship forever but in the end I’d rather have a friend less then knowing I let this happen without having said anything.
