I feel like he’d be a considerably less classy version

In the Harry Potter series we have brilliant genius shit like “I open at the close” which we’re still finding new coincidental significance over, and then we have dumb shit like “you have to say spells out loud but only sometimes because nonverbal spells apparently work.”

We love this series, but for every stroke of genius in the writing, there’s a major loophole or plot oversight that makes it really stupid lol

Like, some of it is planned out by JK like 10 years in advance (like the Snape and Lily thing) while some of it seems to be made up as it goes along, like how wands can just change their allegiance to wizards.

We’re told in the first movie that the wand chooses the wizard, but we don’t find out till the last movie that wands can apparently just change their damn minds?

...and WAIT, Ollivander sensed Draco’s wand’s allegiance has changed and said it might not be Draco’s wand anymore if Harry won it from him, but Harry didn’t win it from him, he literally just ran up to Draco and snatched it out of his hand.

A wand is really gonna change its mind that easily? It’s going to be loyal to the wizard who stole it from its owner? Is that, like, stockholm syndrome only for an inanimate magical object?

This doesn’t comply with the books, I realize, but it doesn’t exactly not comply either.

Why would Malfoy rip a page out of a random book? If he wanted the book, he could have just bought the book himself. He’s not poor, his family doesn’t discourage learning. He chooses to rip a particular page with a pointed glance out of a book. Why?

Think of what this and Dobby’s actions of warning have in common: Lucius Malfoy. The one who was apparently talking freely of the dangers that would face the Muggle borns this year. I think Draco knew more about what was going on, or at least figured more out, than he let on to his friends. Why? He was worried.

How does this connect to the ripped paper? How did Harry and Ron find out about the basilisk? How did Hermione?

Now we’re to assume that Hermione found this in a library book and promptly ripped it out to take with her.

But why would Hermione, with her love and care for books almost on par with the librarian, rip a page out of a book she could have just checked out? My guess is she didn’t find it in the library.

My guess is Draco somehow slipped her the piece of paper that he ripped out of a book before school started, detailing the monster he knew was in the Chamber.

He slipped Hermione the paper somehow, whether by leaving it on her desk or planting it in her bag. He tried to warn them, as best he could.

I always wondered why they so importantly showed Malfoy ripping the page from the book. It was strange to me. Yes he’s destructive but honestly there is no point in showing that. But you’re right- Hermione would NEVER rip out a page of a book- this makes so much sense.

#he made the character more than it was tbh #i love book draco but you don’t get to SEE his struggle so much as infer it based on harry’s rather limited POV and in the movies you get tom felton being amazing and deep and showing the downward spiral of someone who made himself incredibly vulnerable at his first meeting harry because he’s sure that all the hype his parents have been doing towards his family and his winning personality are going to garner him all the cool friends but then the years go on and everyone but slytherin hates him and then everyone but his small group of friends hates him and then he’s not even at school at all and he thinks his parents resent him for not succeeding in killing dumbledore and not helping their family get out under voldemort’s control even though those are both impossible requests for someone who is still underage you can see him try and make a decision of what’s right and what’s easy and once he starts thinking for himself you can see him leaning towards the former because none of this is what he signed up for because from the moment his school career began he’s been failing to live up to the expectations he’s set for himself so he rejects everyone around him as lesser and latches onto the one thing that his parents taught him that comes in handy and condescends to anyone who’ll listen and by the end you can see it eat away at him to the point where he’s all but begging harry to save him from dying because he’s once again failed supremely but this time he’s hit the actual rock bottom and his throat is raw from his constant need to resist swallowing his pride and all he wants is a fresh gasp of air and when his parents get him back he flees without looking back because as much as they’ve been worn out by the war draco’s been worn out by so much more in addition to that #and this all happens int he background with no more than a page of dialogue in each movie whereas the main characters have massive arcs and long lingering moments where you see them break down and build themselves back up and tom felton does it all with such cohesion and quiet brilliance that you look back and deem him a main character when he’s really been lost among the massive cast only getting a few words in edgewise and sometimes i wonder if he maybe relates to draco on a level that makes everything that much more rich and nuanced#harry potter #word vomit #spoilers #malfoys appreciation blog ‘∞
