work leaving me absolutely bone-tired so i can't boop much, tysm for the boops everyone and i am booping you all in my dreams <3
I think it would be nice to have the option to hide numbers on ao3. Make it where the 'kudos' and 'hits' number is author-viewable only, have an alternate option for when a list is sorted by such so people can read things based off their tags and preferences rather than see big number go brrrr
I speak as someone with popular fics, it doesn't have to be a requirement but like, an option? This could go for other websites too, tumblr notes and the like
}
.stats .hits, .stats .kudos, .stats .bookmarks, .stats .comments { display: none; }
reblogging to say that this is the add-on code i put in my ao3 skin, i've had it on for years and it's done wonders to my mental health. i'm the kind of person who gets really unreasonably competitive with numbers and the fact i'm not able to see any kudos/hits/etc is so, so nice.
this is that my stats looks like:
it's not a universal solution, other people can still see your metrics, but seriously this helped me a LOT. it's really simple to make an ao3 skin and tack it on, it works with my current dark mode skin no problem. i have no clue where my metrics are at at any given time and it's saved me a lot of heartache.
My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.
This sounds fake but the logic behind it is actually really interesting? She said obsession with a new fandom triggers quick dopamine release when we consume all this related content--it's easy and addictive.
What we're NOT getting is that 'slow dopamine' that's more sustainable and engaging. That's the kind we get from DOING things that take effort but are ultimately rewarding.
So like, she suggested that writing fic and making fanart are ways to balance the quick dopamine of watching a show/reading fic with the slow dopamine of working at something that takes effort.
Moral of the story is you should engage in the process of creation around your favorite things. You'll feel better for it.
Oh.
OH.
“sorry for the gap between updates, my therapist made me come back to this” would not be in the top 1 million wildest author’s notes on AO3
people who work 8 to 5 how in the world do you have the energy to get anything done after that
A quick tutorial on how to Download Fics from AO3
After making this poll about the panic that comes when Archive of Our Own goes down, there seems to be a chunk of folks who didn't know they could download fics for offline use, or don't know how to go about it. Here's a quick tutorial for that.
You do not need an AO3 account (unless the fic you are trying to download is restricted to AO3 users only) you only need an internet connection and a device to download to, whether it's PC or a phone.
These instructions work for both desktop and mobile. At the top of the fic, where the chapter index is, there will be the download option on the right side, and an 'Entire Work' button the left side.
For One-Shots: Go ahead and click the download button.
For multiple chapter fics: In order to have the fic download all together instead of downloading each chapter individually, make sure you select the 'Entire Work' button. Like the names says, it displays the entire work on the webpage, and will download the entire fic with all it's chapters in the correct order when you go to download.
Click the download button. You've got a couple of options:
AZW3 - Amazon-developed ebook format that is designed for Kindles and Amazon's systems. Good if you want to read off of a kindle.
EPUB - Standard file format for Ebooks and is basically used as the default for pretty much most ebook readers. This is what I prefer to use when downloading to my phone.
MOBI - An older version of the AZW3. Older but standard as well.
PDF - Downloads the fics as a PDF. Can be read anywhere you can open a PDF.
HTML - Downloads an offline version of the exact webpage you are looking at. Fine if you want to keep the 'look' of AO3 but you can't change the text size or reading style like you can with ebook formats.
Not sure which one to download? Use EPUB since it's standard and readable by pretty much everything, retains images too.
You now have your fic downloaded to your device and can read it on whatever reading app you have. YAY!
Do keep in mind that these are offline files that do not synch with Archive. So if you download an ongoing fic that updates or is edited since you last downloaded, you will need to download it again to have the updated version.
Happy Reading!

when will ao3 come back from the war
The rest of the thread is here.
tl;dr: Don’t monetize AO3, kids. You won’t like what happens next.
read this thread. this is by far the most concise explanation of a lot of different issues that i’ve seen in fandom spaces in a while. cosigning both the linked thread and the thread about aus/uk/can law that’s linked in-thread.
AHDHXHEBSG TWITTER WRITERS DID WHAT NOW???? AND PEOPLE PAID THEM????
If someone has never taken a class that includes copyright law, they may not know this stuff, so I don’t necessarily blame random people for not knowing what copyright is, but like… maybe just maybe it’s something that should be taught????
Just another reminder, because this always drives me crazy, but even if monetizing your fic was 100% unambiguously legal and protected, AO3 would still not let you do it because AO3 was founded and is supported by people like me who want a fandom community that is completely divested from making money off of fic.
Yes, this. Lots of fanworks on AO3 are unambiguously legal. Fics based on Shakespeare plays and fairy tales and Greek mythology and The Great Gatsby and your original character from your D&D game are not violations of copyright, because no copyright applies to those things.
AO3 still doesn’t let you monetize those things on the site, because we don’t want the site to be commercial! Because that’s not what it’s for!
It’s not there for you (generic you) to make money off the efforts of the people who build and maintain the site for free! We aren’t getting paid for the work we do to give you a nice site to use, just like you aren’t getting paid for the work you do to create whatever art you share there. Because fandom is supposed to be a community where we share with each other, and therefore we all benefit.
The deal is, we give you a free, stable, safe platform to host your works. In exchange, you get a site that isn’t covered in ads and tip jars and links to gofundme and “read the next chapter at my patreon”. You get one goddamn place on the internet that isn’t trying to make money off you. And we will defend that space and keep it non-commercial.
You are not breaking copyright posting or even selling fanfiction. Because you are not distributing copyrighted work. What you are doing is violating trademarks and that is a completely different area of law.
Long story short, the difference between fanfic and a tie-in novel is that the publisher paid a license fee to the copyright holder to tell and sell a new story using their trademarks.
“omg you’re so creative. how do you get your ideas” i hallucinate a single scene in the taco bell drive thru and then spend 13 months trying to write it

FINISH YOUR WIP WEEK (Aug 25-31)
hello, so this is a thing me and a small group of people are doing, but anyone can join!
take a work-in-progress thing you've had in the back of a closet and wanted to finish forever--art, writing, craft, whatever--and finish it. then during the last week of august, everyone posts what they've finished.
people can post multiple finished WIPs, or just one. we can even do a tag for it. maybe #finishyourwipweek2024 ?
There comes a time when fandom becomes less of an escape from anxiety to being the source of anxiety. Sometimes I need to remind myself what’s important to focus on, and I made this chart to help me with that.
(Posting this at the request of a few people. The design/concept was inspired by an instagram post about covid-19 located here).
Absolutely this.
All of the fandom purists who exist in so many communities would do well to heed this.
What does deodorant taste like?
no particular taste except a faint chemical-y aroma. the mouthfeel is more distinct: crumbly, flaky, and incredibly dry in the mouth. at least, that's what the bar deodorant tastes like. i haven't tried the spray ones
