Expanding a bit on the post I just reblogged, I absolutely HATE how a surprisingly large portion of the population now thinks that feminism is synonymous with being a "girlboss". The idea that working some kind of professional job and being successful at it is the only way to do feminism is insane. People will literally say "feminism has failed us" or "I'm giving up on feminism" when they're unhappy with their jobs. Babes idk how to explain this to you but that is not a problem with feminism that is a problem with your job. You don't need a rich man to provide for you while you take care of the kids you need a goddamn union and some paid leave

The reason why feminists of past generations fought for middle to upper class women to leave the house and join the workforce was not because they thought working a job is some kind of emotionally fulfilling activity. They fought for that because housewives at the time were completely at the mercy of their husbands. If you were a housewife and your husband was abusive, or you just didn't love him anymore and wanted out, you had nowhere to go. You had no money because he controlled the finances, you had no car or place to stay because his name was on the title for both, you had no job because you stayed at home and no education or work experience with which to get a job because you probably got married pretty young. The point of getting women into the workforce was to make women less dependent on men because if you depend on someone for the roof over your head and the food on your plate, they can do whatever the fuck they want to you and you'll have absolutely no recourse.

The natural next step of this thought process should be "ok, now women are in the workforce, they are not dependent on men in the way they once were, how can we change the structure of work such that it doesn't make everyone fucking miserable" giving up on feminism because your predecessors fought for the right for you to have a well-paying job and your job sucks is such an intellectually lazy conclusion to come to.

Like hey, if you've ever thought "working for a living is miserable, I wish I had a man to pay all the bills" do yourself a favor and ask yourself why that was the solution your brain went to? Why is it that when you feel like work is sucking your soul, the first solution you go to is to become a housewife? Maybe it's because as a girl, you were taught that being a housewife is a good and admirable thing to do, and even though you were also taught that it's good to have a career as a woman, everyone for your whole life has always been subtly, gently nudging you toward the idea of "settling down". Have you considered that perhaps that is an expression of a system of social organization that prioritizes the needs of men over women and encourages women to submit to the whims of men? You know, like some kind of *patriarchy*? Damn if only we had some kind of ideology to combat that...

'girl you don't need a husband you need a union' is such a succinct and badass summary of our next step forward.

I appreciate that they actually got Robert Reich to participate (although I imagine he was easy to persuade as his whole shtick is this kind of thing)

Jesus, the end.

“I get it, you’re saying I’ll have a tough time finding a job like my dad’s.”

“No, no, kid. I’m saying you’ll never find a job like your dad’s, and you’ll have a tough time finding something significantly worse.”

Hi. Things are bleak, I know that. I know that we paid for Trump's last term with blood and it is likely the price will be blood again.

But listen to me. LISTEN.

You do not have to force yourself to witness horrors as an act of activism. It is not a form of activism. You can put your phone down, you can block that horrific video. We cannot win if you cannot fight and you will not be able to fight if you are hopeless.

Do not let them guilt you into this. People who are exhausted are easier to walk over. Take care of yourself, find community where you find joy.

^^^ remember this. do not exhaust yourself into hopelessness. take care of yourself and stay strong.

I know I've recced it before, but if you want a place to monitor the news while avoiding getting caught in the horrors, What The Fuck Just Happened Today is a really useful resource. They summarize political (& adjacent) news so you can remain aware of what's going on while still minimizing the emotional energy you expend on any one issue. (And they provide links and sourcing if you need to know more.)

Traumatizing yourself won't open cages.

Traumatizing yourself won't fill bellies.

Traumatizing yourself won't make others less cruel.

Suffering won't reduce suffering in the world.

You cannot abuse yourself into being sustainably industrious.

This, however, doesn't mean to do nothing. There is indeed an important need to be involved in helping one another, but the helping is what helps. There is a strong pressure from others to "not look away." This doesn't mean to literally watch every piece of media that comes out. At its core it means to not give way to apathy for personal comfort. The ways you help can be profound and personal without needing to traumatized yourself (and those around you.)

One thing a lot of people forget is the kinds of horrors that get shared come with their own risk to traumatize those most affected by those depictions of violence. If you have BIPoC, Queer, Jewish, or even just women friends in general, chances are they don't need convincing of the horrors in your life, and in these cases, showing them traumatic videos won't help them. It'll just traumatize them more.

I'm some ways, the best help you can provide may well be found in shielding them from these horrors. It is, in fact, a radical act to become a refuge your friend needs in these times. If you're not sure what you can do, look for others helping, and help in the same ways as them.

And if you do burn out don't try to abuse yourself into keeping up. Rest when you need. Grieve when you need to. Celebrate any way you can. There will be others to take up the mantle. For every awful person out there, there can be found good people also, if you seek them out.

Stay safe.

wow! as a broke college kid, i wish there was a way to access books and movies as well as scientific articles that the new administration isn't necessarily a fan of. man. If only there was a free and trusted vpn ( up to 10 gigs of downloadable data) to use in conjunction with an anonymizing router (also free up to 10 gigs) to safely, er, permanently borrow media in an untraceable way as well as share files. Man, what's that browser that keeps your online activity anonymous? I'm awfully attached to firefox, personally. If only i had a browser extension that would throw a smoke screen over my browsing data while blocking ads at the same time.

what was i talking about? hmm. weird.

when people are like “oh so you’re just gonna judge someone for their political beliefs?” yes actually. I think someone’s values and opinions is a pretty reasonable thing to judge them for.
