A comprehensive guide to wilderness & travel medicine

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this yet but I just stumbled across this guide for a whole lot of medical emergencies when you’re out in the wilderness. I only skimmed through it so far but I feel like this would be a great resource for whump writers (or writers in general really)!

Questions for fellow whump enjoyers

Asking whump community -- especially people who are either (a) new(er) to whumpblr or (b) have been around so long that new people may not know these sorts of things, and may be looking for answers:

  1. What was your whump awakening like?
  2. Were there specific scenes -- in written or visual media -- that stayed with you?
  3. How and when did you realize you were interested in and enjoyed whump, even if you didn't know it had a name yet?
  4. How did you discover that you were not alone?
  5. How old are you now? (general age ranges are perfectly OK here)
  6. Have you ever shared your whumpy interests with anyone outside of Tumblr/AO3? What made it feel safe to talk about?
  7. What kind of whumpy writing/art do you create?
  8. How are your interests in whump related -- or definitively not related -- to your own experiences/trauma/life or identities (e.g. ace and/or aro spectrum, kinky, disabled, trans, immigrant, etc.)?
  9. What is your favorite whump trope?
  10. What is your least favorite whump trope?
  11. Who are some indie/tumblr/AO3 whump writers or artists whose work you really enjoy? (bonus: include links)
  12. What are your favorite whumpy books, movies, shows, comics, or video games?

You can answer some, all, or none of these questions -- but please keep reblogging so others see and can join as well.

This is a lovely idea, thank you for putting it together! This blog has existed since 2018 but I post so sporadically I'm barely in the community at this point which is a shame so this looks like a very fun thing to get back into it at least a little, lol. Picked out a few questions I wanted to answer.

  1. What was your whump awakening like? I didn't have a specific awakening, I always enjoyed characters I liked getting hurt, but it wasn't until I discovered fanfiction that I realised that it was something other people enjoyed.
  2. Were there specific scenes -- in written or visual media -- that stayed with you? As a kid, I went insane over the ATLA finale when Zuko took Azula's lightning strike for Katara, straight up foaming at the mouth lmao, don't think I ever recovered from it.
  3. What kind of whumpy writing/art do you create? Putting my blorbos through the wringer in my fics! My greatest achievement is that I was a Whumptober completionist last year – in case anyone likes Final Fantasy XV, I wrote exclusively for that fandom for Whumptober and you can find it all here!
  4. How are your interests in whump related -- or definitively not related -- to your own experiences/trauma/life or identities (e.g. ace and/or aro spectrum, kinky, disabled, trans, immigrant, etc.)? Very summarized, lack of an emotional support system in my life so I microdose on support and comfort through my blorbos instead. I'm also aro/ace and I LIVE for platonic relationships, so in my whump I prefer there to not be any romantic relationship but a focus on platonic relationships instead.
  5. What is your favorite whump trope? Big fan of injury-related fevers like infections and stuff (it's the best of both worlds, injury AND illness!)
  6. What is your least favorite whump trope? I don't enjoy the presence of a whumper very much. Torture, kidnapping, not really my jam. I much prefer environmental whump, accidents, battle injuries and the like.
  7. What are your favorite whumpy books, movies, shows, comics, or video games? I'll be real, I get most of my whump from fanfiction, but Final Fantasy XV absolutely blew my mind with how they hurt my fave specifically, 11/10 holy shit. Also, even though it has me screaming crying etc. I adore the slow decline of Arthur in RDR2. Boy did that do things to me!

Thank you again for making this post, it's a really fun idea and I'll happily spread it around!

On that note, if there's anyone else who's mostly into hurting characters from video games, hmu, I'd love to follow more viddy game whump fans <3

I know there's a well loved niche for royal whump, but lately I've been thinking a lot about royal *guard* whump.

Hurt for being loyal to the old king, punished for doing the thing they were trained to do. Grief-struck at the loss of their fellow guards in combat. Guilt at failing at their most important task: protecting the heart of kingdom.

so sick and tired of people hating on lady whump. give me your lady whumpees slouching against a brick wall, drugged and dazed as they try to make their way home. give me girls covered in blood — whether it be their own or someone else’s. give me lady whumpees who thrash and scream and fight against their restraints. who spit poison at their captors. who cry and beg and plead and kick. i’m so goddamn tired of women in whump either always 1. being the whumper, or 2. being forced into these soft, docile stereotypes that prevent them from expressing anything but. give me more lady whumpees or give me death.

as much as i love a fancy proper person wearing fancy proper clothes and trying to hide that they're ill

i also love that same fancy proper person wearing a comfy sweatshirt or hoodie and pajama pants just accepting (if begrudgingly) that they're ill

Glasses!!!

-

So what about characters who don’t usually wear glasses (either they usually just don’t wear them at all or they wear contacts instead) but when they are sick, they look so different and people can tell they are sick because they ARE wearing glasses, whether that’s because they feel too ill to bother putting in their contacts or they don’t usually need them but their head is really hurting.

I feel like I’ve done a bad job of explaining this but yeah, characters who don’t usually wear glasses wearing them when they’re sick
