I mean it's also about the way faith can give you strength when you need it, but render you blind when you don't suspect it. it's about the paper-thin line between loyalty and worship, and the follies of deification. it's about sacrifice and survival, and what it means to bear witness to the end of your world. it's about selfhood, and the intense courage and commitment it takes to remain true to yourself when the world around you has gone mad. it's about the seductive siren song of entropy and the futility of the fight against the heat-death of the universe. it's about how absolute power absolutely corrupts, but without power you cannot protect the people you love. it's about how, in your desperation to protect people, you turn into a monster yourself. it's about how placing someone on a pedestal fundamentally dehumanizes them, yes, even if you worship them as a god. it's about how excising all of your emotions can make you a better warrior and protector; it's also about the necessity of emotion because energy literally comes from emotion, powered by the human soul. it's about the inevitability of fate and the cruelty of the law of conservation of matter; it's about defying destiny and your roommate's bizarre luck. it's about the graveyard moon and the undreaming ocean, the ravenous earth and the sightless sky. it's about how love will grow again and again, even if it's cut away; it's about humanity's inherent yearning for hope as its most fundamental instinct
it is also — and I cannot stress this enough — about how being the chosen one does not pay the bills or run your little apocalypse dream town for you, so behind every world-saving college student is a squad composed of a lady knight who can turn into metal at will, an easily-brainwashed roommate, a near-sighted computer programmer, a lady from HR, a few retirement-age college professors, an ex-bartender, a whole host of government bureaucrats, a sassy system, a (mostly) dead god, and a guy who's literally a pile of ashes but doesn't let that stop him from judging you and your squad.
and of course an emotional support rationality octopus. gotta have that emotional support rationality octopus
