why are all these modern aus for the Odyssey set in a high school. where's the retelling where Odysseus is just a guy lost in an airport who keeps missing his connecting flights home due to a comical series of delays and disgruntled airline employees

Absolutely genuis

Every few minutes, someone honks. The woman behind the wheel shifts and lowers her sunglasses to glare at the circling cars in the rearview mirror. Vultures. Let them curse. She keeps her doors locked and her phone battery charged. Penelope has been waiting in the arrivals lot for far too long, and she refuses to give up her place for anyone.

imagine you’re going on an adventure with the person you love most in the whole world. but every step you take to get closer to the end drains him and there’s nothing you can do to help, not really. you can’t take the weight off his shoulders. more than anything, you want to protect him, but even that becomes more difficult with each passing day. so instead you try to comfort him. you hold his hand through the day and him through the night. he wakes up in your arms and, for a moment, forgets everything else. also gollum is there

This is one of those posts that the last line just socked me between the eyes.

“There’s a cure?!” asked the girl that kills everything she touches.  “Hey shut up we’re perf” replied the girl that makes clouds.

For real though. Storm has stopped an entire tsunami before. “Makes clouds my ass” she can conjure lightning and tornadoes and is revered as a god in her tribe. She literally changes atmospheric pressure and that’s how she flies. So fuck you. Storm is flawless.

I think you missed the part where the GIRL WHO KILLS EVERYTHING SHE TOUCHES wants to NOT KILL EVERYTHING SHE TOUCHES and everyone dismisses her incredible misfortune just because the lady who is the AVATAR OF THE STORM won the fucking SUPERPOWER LOTTERY

“Finally, a cure for my chainsaw hands!” decreed Chainsaw-Hands Joe.

“There is no cure,” said Johnny Five-Dicks. “There’s nothing wrong with us.”

The last comment literally always cracks me up

The X-Men are an extremely good metaphor for oppressed minorities until they are suddenly an extremely terrible metaphor for oppressed minorities.

The scale on which the first reply misses the point literally never ceases to awe me.

I gotta say, though, this is a place where the X-men are being a good metaphor for oppressed minorities.  Specifically, in this case, the disabled community.

“Yay, there’s a cure!” says the girl with depression.  “Cure for what, motherfucker, I’m not sick,” says the person with autism.

“Yay, there’s a cure!” I say, with my fibromyalgia and random bad pain days.  “Yes, because it’s easier to talk about eliminating us than talk about teaching sign language in school,” says the Deaf person.  “‘Cure’ is violent rhetoric.”

The problem is, of course, that a vast number of things have been aggregated under the label of “disability,” and many of them don’t even resemble each other.  Depression sucks in an objective fashion, whereas autism is just a way of being (which, like many ways of being, may suck at some times, and generally sucks worse when not accommodated).  Similar deal with chronic pain versus the Deaf community.  These things really should not be grouped together, but they are.  And since they are grouped so haphazardly, they will often be at cross-purposes.

It is ridiculous, in the X-men universe, to classify all “mutants” as one group.  You have ridiculously powerful people with little downside, you have powerful people with a major downside, you have people with very limited powers but few drawbacks, you have people with limited powers and massive drawbacks, and that’s not even getting into other divisions, like whether you look like a baseline human all the time, part of the time, or none of the time.  “Realistically,” if you can apply that word to a fantasy universe, Storm and Rogue belong to completely different minorities which should require completely different approaches.  But society has grouped them under one umbrella, or forced them to group themselves for self-protection, and thus you have conversations like the one above.

So it’s actually not a bad take.  Mind you, the X-men have had bad takes, and will do so again, and I’m skeptical about whether “powers” of any kind even work for a metaphor about minority representation—but this particular vignette has something useful to say.

I feel like so many problems people have with tv at the moment could be solved if we just went back to the good ole days of 20 episodes a season that’s just sixty percent filler and character development. Give the people what they want- less condensed story and more meaningless shenanigans

More reasons why Zuko being the Firelord is objectively the funniest thing on earth:

  • HES SEVENTEEN
  • He hasn’t been civilised in 4 years, his entire teenage experience consists of living on a boat and sleeping rough. The most stable bed he has was probably in Ba Sing Se he probably will just nap anywhere.
  • He has customer service experience which means he probably uses his customer service voice on his minsters.
  • Additionally he probably just wanders into to kitchen to get his own snacks and tea because he forgets what servants do.
  • He probably has no idea why he can’t just chase after an assassin he used to hunt the avatar for Agnis sake why is the captain of the guard demanding he stay in his room he’ll find the guy first (he’s probably right)
  • Katara probably has a free pass on Eco terrorism because what’s he going to do challenge her, she’ll beat his ass.
  • If he saw a minster doing something shady he will either invite lady Beifong to detect their BS or commit B&E and look for evidence himself.
  • He somehow found a baby dragon and raises it.
  • He will be far to willing to give Kyoshi island anything they want cause he feels bad and Suki scares him.
  • He randomly insisted on giving some earth kingdom village 100 ostrich horses.
  • The Avatar will just show up call him Hotman and demand the go on adventures and the Firelord will just dip because he’s been confined to long and has the Zoomies.
  • He takes far to much advice from Sokka and will genuinely believe if someone doesn’t get Sokkas plans they must be an idiot because Sokka is 16.
  • Sokka and Zuko also get into a lot of teenage rebellion phases by accident.
  • Toph just walks in breaks a wall of his palace and demands a field trip that always involves the Firelord having to explain himself to the cops.
  • He somehow knows every dangerous teen in the world and they all come for tea uninvited.
  • He has broken into both the NWT and Ba Sing Se.
  • He has a really well documented facial scar and official portraits but still disappears to be Lee the tea guy like no one knows.
  • HES SEVENTEEN.

I don't think I've seen anybody talk about how absolutely insane The Boiling Rock is from Hakoda's perspective.

Imagine getting captured, and your son tells you that you won't be apart for too long. That's sweet, but obviously your son has no resources to spare for organizing a breakout. You hope that the Avatar can defeat the Fire Lord soon - that's the earliest time you could hope to be rescued.

You get put into a temporary holding facility until the guards can sort out who is who. After a while, they put you on a prisoner transport to the Boiling Rock. Your captors try to intimidate you by telling you that it's the highest security prison in the Fire Nation, probably the whole world. It's far away from the capital.

You arrive at the Boiling Rock. It really is in the middle of a boiling lake. There's only one way in or out, and it's a gondola that takes you above the boiling lake. You meet the warden. They take you to your cell. You settle down to wait for the end of the war.

And 15 minutes later Sokka comes in like "hey dad I'm here I got the prince of the Fire Nation and an Earth Kingdom ninja leader gf ok let's go I'm busting you out"

genuinely one of the worst things that’s happened to television in the last few years (exacerbated by streaming services) is death of Filler. going from 20 episodes to 8 because “we didn’t really need that episode where the main characters went to the beach right? it had no long lasting effect” but we DID!!! we needed to see how they act without the Big Bad Plot and to establish the dynamics between the characters and lay in the sun (do they forget sunscreen? how do they react to a thieving seagull? do they get buried in the sand or do they do the burying?). the plot isn’t everything. the action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments. give us character development and our little scenes back

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES 2023, dir. Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Dale

LIVE ACTION PRACTICAL EFFECTS TABAXI

I recently watched this and was blown away by this entire scene. This was a one off pair of characters with no names and no lines. They exist entirely to demonstrate the paladin being a Good Person by saving a baby. After he does this, he goes and gives money to a beggar - who is a dragonborn. He is one of two dragonborn in the film, and neither one needs to be a dragonborn. It would have been so easy to make the tabaxi and dragonborn characters humans, or slap some ears on them to make them elves, and they didn’t. They really went out of their way, building practical effects for the tabaxi and dragonborn when they didn’t need to… this is a movie that loves its source material and it also loves being a movie. People working on this movie cared.

I really missed that.

#and the birdman#don’t forget the birdman YES! AND the birdman! Now the birdman couldn’t be human because Plot Reasons demanded he have wings, but he was also almost entirely practical effects!

This movie was so much fun, loved how lovingly made all of the creatures and effects were

I love Jarnathan

Oh! Oh, I have the artbook for this movie!!

Can confirm, Jarnathan (the aarakocra, or “birdman” as some people here call him) was all practical effects! His face was an animatronic mask, his feet were articulated high-heel shoes, and he had three fully-functional talon-like fingers on each hand too!

The directors Daley and Goldstein could have made him entirely CG, but they instead went to Legacy Effects, who specialize in prosthetics and animatronics and puppeteering, because they REALLY wanted Jarnathan to look and feel authentic.

According to the artbook, the wings on him were a backpack, a self-contained mechanism that weighed around 60 pounds. The wings extended open to about ten or eleven feet!

I love this movie! :D
