On October 14th, 2011 50 attendees gathered in the parking lot of Quirk Gallery on a beautiful fall night for the evening of discussion, music and community of the first Feast RVA. We were running behind as moving the tables & chairs from nearby 1708 & stringing up dozens of bistro lights took longer than expected, but everyone who arrived pitched in to help us get started. Kevin Wilson of The Cellar Door & Sticky ToGoGo catered while The Bird And Her Consort provided the music. Three projects presented to the diners and at the end of the night we had another first, our first tie.
RVAudio & Dollop Desserts came out on top as our first (co-)grantees, and split the $536 prize. Dollop Desserts used the prize money to have her commercial kitchen inspected & purchase an early batch of supplies used for her renowned whoopie pies. RVAudio purchased a Zoom audio-recorder that she used to upgrade the quality of the podcasts she’d been recording with unique Richmonders.
At the end of the night as the entire crowd assisted in putting away the dishes, tables & chairs used that night, they all knew that something special had begun. Today, 19 months later we’re raising the money that would allow Feast RVA to take the next step towards doing more: being self sufficient, being able to dedicate more resources towards the grantees and being able to help other groups and organizations start their journey.
