HOUSE HARLAW • Ten Towers Black, a silver scythe
House Harlaw rules the entire island of Harlaw, and is therefore one of the most powerful houses of the Iron Islands. There are numerous cadet branches of House Harlaw, all pledging fealty to the Harlaws of Ten Towers. Lord Theomore began building a replacement keep for the damp and unhealthy Harlaw Hall, but changed his mind so many times that the resulting ten keeps were eventually joined by walkways and bridges, becoming the keep of Ten Towers. Lord Balon Greyjoy married Alannys Harlaw, who gave him four children.

House Drumm is a noble house of the Iron Islands whose keep is on Old Wyk. The Drumms hold the title “Lord of Old Wyk” and therefore have great control over the island, which is considered the holiest island by the ironmen.

Five thousand years ago, Urron Greyiron attacked the kingsmoot assembled on Nagga’s Bones, killed his opponents, and declared himself king. He also made the inheritance hereditary, breaking the centuries-old tradition of the kingsmoot. House Greyiron ruled for a thousand years until the Andal invasion reached the Iron Islands and defeated them.

House Hoare had ruled as High Kings of the Iron Islands after House Greyiron was destroyed by the Andals. Harrag Hoare was elected king by the kingsmoot. Under the Hoares, the Iron Islands reached their peak, holding lands all along the western coast of Westeros, from Bear Island down to the Arbor. Their sigil reflects this dominion. King Harren Hoare the Black ordered the construction of Harrenhal on the shores of the Gods Eye; the huge castle was not completed for forty years. On the day of its completion, Aegon and his sisters rode from the east and began their conquest by burning King Harren in his keep with dragonfire. Harren’s brother was Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch at the time, but kept to his vows and watched his house die out.
