Corlys and Rhaenys anon here. I would like for people to finally understand that the reason why Rhaenyra will never be explicitly reffered to as "beloved" in terms of personal relationships, especially as a wife, has nothing to do with her or Daemon in their intimate life, and everything to do with what she represents in a mysoginistic and patriarchal society: she is a woman that wants to rule, that effectively does not live by the rules imposed on her - not in her attitude, not in her personality, not in her position as heir etc.

Historically, women in positions similar or identical to Rhaenyra are constantly attacked, especially in historical documents. They are considered - by men generally, but by other women too - unnatural, anomalies that look to disturb the "proper" order of things. And these attacks do not resume only at them as persons - since they are unnatural in wanting to rule, they are also seen as unnatural mothers, wives etc. Every aspect of their personal life is under scrutiny and under attack as well. Sometimes they are not even considered women.

(See how The Shepherd reffers to Rhaenyra: “this unnatural queen who sits bleeding on the Iron Throne, her whore’s lips glistening and red with the blood of her sweet sister.”)

That's why we don't have romantic songs about Rhaenyra in the way we have about Laena or Nettles. Because Laena and Nettles do not disrupt the order of things in any way - Laena is won at a duel and handled between Corlys and Daemon; Nettles comes from nowhere and goes nowhere. They depend on Daemon alone to provide some importance for them. They are, in many ways, ideal for a patriarchal society.

Rhaenyra is not only proactive in deciding to live her life as she desires, but she is also held guilty for a war that was never started by her, called a whore repeatedly, dehumanized to the point of disbelief. But it's not hard at all to discern, from the objective actions of the people in her life, how beloved she was not only by Viserys, Daemon and all of her children, but by the people also.

I'm sorry this turned out so long, it's just... I wish people would comprehend this and stop painting her as unloved, mocking her, calling her names. Because in doing so they fall directly into the trap of the maesters who obviously hated her.

The simple fact that people continued to fight for her even after she died, that it is her line that continues, should tell people who was in the right. Alas, this fandom was never known for critical thinking.

It’s the fact that Jace’s own real prominent memory of Alicent is when she tried to take his little brother’s eye out. For an act he committed (to save Jace mind you) and people were really acting like he doesn’t have a reason to question why his mother would stupidly sneak off to see her when he in fact has every right to ask for answers and right to believe going to her will accomplish nothing. Like it’s not even about the trauma Alicent caused Rhaenrya it’s also about the trauma Alicent caused Rhaenrya’s kids and the fact that they write Rhaenrya as not understanding that will always irk me. Book Rhaenrya’s true love was her kids and if anybody caused them harm it’s on sight forever, Show Rhaenrya legit has to reminded of her children’s trauma (her and Jaces argument in 2x07) and is shown to be annoyed majority of the time she had a conversation with her son.

Yeah that's valid.

"Mom why are you trying to make peace with the horrible woman who wanted to mutilate my 6yo brother when I was like 8 coz I still have vivid nightmares about her coming at us like a shrieking harpy with a knife" -> I would say it's because the authors are horrible shitty writers and TB's kids are all treated as an afterthought.

While we get to endure Aemond's misery and trauma and how he copes with it with a sex worker and excuse me what was the point of that scene (those scenes?) again? Like, yes, he was bullied (and still is by his owm brother, yes he lost an eye, yes his father cared less than his mom (from his perspective), it's all very traumatic but we literally get nothing equivalent for the other side. Rhaena and Baela know their mother committed suicide by dragon and the show is like:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Rhaena has expressed anything about Luke dying? She might not have cared about him as a betrothed but she could have cared about him as a close family member still! But no instead most of them only seem mildly annoyed but aren't really grieving. Baela is angry at her dad too. That's about it? Even the impact of Rhaenys' death is quickly glossed over.

We do however need to know how sad Aegon is about losing his dick - oh and his dragon too I guess. That was incredibly important after all as GOT has taught us:

DAEMON TARGARYEN & LAENA VELARYON Artwork by Lily Abdullina Prince Daemon knew that his brother would not be pleased when he heard of his marriage. Prudently, the prince and his new bride took themselves far from Westeros soon after the wedding, crossing the narrow sea on their dragons. Some said they flew to Valyria, in defiance of the curse that hung over that smoking wasteland, to search out the secrets of the dragonlords of the old Freehold. Mushroom himself reports this as fact in his Testimony, but we have abundant evidence that the truth was less romantic. Prince Daemon and Lady Laena flew first to Pentos, where they were feted by the city’s prince. The Pentoshi feared the growing power of the Triarchy to the south, and saw Daemon as a valuable ally against the Three Daughters. From there, they crossed the Disputed Lands to Old Volantis, where they enjoyed a similar warm welcome. Then they flew up the Rhoyne, to visit Qohor and Norvos. In those cities, far removed from the woes of Westeros and the power of the Triarchy, their welcome was less rapturous. Everywhere they went, however, huge crowds turned out for a glimpse of Vhagar and Caraxes.

A DEADLY HATCHLING Artwork by Joe Slucher

Yet this new Aegon’s arrival, initially met with joy, also sparked a new spate of rumors against Larra and her brothers. These rumors grew fiercer and wilder as the early hopes of 135 AC were proved false. The earliest omen was in Driftmark, when the dragon’s egg presented to Laena Velaryon upon her birth quickened and hatched…and from it came a wyrm, wingless and white, that immediately turned on the little girl in the cradle and tore a bloody chunk from her arm. Lord Alyn Velaryon leapt to his daughter’s defense, ripping the dragon off her and hacking it to pieces. No one could ever recall such an event happening in all the years since Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters had brought fire and blood to the Seven Kingdoms. Already fearful of dragons, King Aegon commanded that any dragon eggs in the Red Keep be sent to Dragonstone—a command that angered Prince Viserys, who did not wish to part with his still-unhatched egg. Viserys refused to speak with his brother in the aftermath.

Daeron II stans/Martell stans are so funny, all we said is that Targaryen men denying their daughters and sisters physical, sexual and emotional autonomy for the sake of their politics was awful, using what Daeron II did to Daenerys as an example. And everytime, they tell us to fuck off and selling teenage girls is actually great.

And the fact that what Daeron II did to Daenerys is CLEARLY meant to be a direct callback to what Viserys did to Daenerys Stormborn too. Damn, I thought we all agreed that selling our (teenage sister) to a foreign older man for political gain was disgusting ?? What changed ?

Because those... “anti racism activists” are quick to call the Dothraki “savages brown rapists” but hey I guess it doesn’t apply to the people of “mi gente latino, Arabs, Spaniard, Italians, Welsh and Southest Asia” region.

I talked about Daeron, Daenerys, Maron, and the Blackfyres HERE.

Nice points! Esp considering that he was already marrying Myriah, why send off Daenerys to be married early?

I think that it has to do with Daemon Blackfyre, that he wanted to preserve his and his sister's reputation, (prevent "relations" b/t her and Daemon, and so there isn't another bastard as with Daena and their father for a multitude of reasons), OR he couldn't persuade Maron from including Daenerys in their deal. Maybe all at once, esp when he's trying to consolidate his own reign/legitimacy/authority. HERE is an interesting essay about his problems and how Daemon Blackfyre would have likely used Daeron's perceived "weakness" to bolster his own claim.

Still don't think the Martells are PoCs or the rest of Dorne (except those of the Greenblood or the "sandy" Dornish), BUT bc the Martells are still not really considered like the other Andal-worshippers bc of that Rhoynar ancestry giving them that absolute primogeniture and the particular accent they have (no most of them do not speak a different language, they just have an accent). So the bigotry against Dornish people is there.

omg that post is so true. the viewers left with the sense that rhaenyra would have chosen harwin even over daemon given the chance, but daemon would have throw laena to caraxes' snout if there were the chance for rhaenyra. the writers didn't know how to balanced both choices from D and R and even L, which was the daughter of two important people within the house targaryen.

I don't think that was what that thread was about, anon.

Daemyras are so violently racist towards Baela, Rhaena and Laena, it baffles me. Sometimes, I’ll be having a good time on the internet or reading a fic, and then I’ll stumble upon something profoundly racist. The racism I've seen is actually turning me off the ship and the characters.

Laena was not Daemon's second choice. He loved her. They were happy, and they had three wonderful children together. They toured Essos together, and he flew to Dragonstone to get Rhaenyra's maester to try to save her life. He loved her deeply, and he mourned her when she passed.

You can love more than one person, and admitting that Daemon loved Laena will not kill you or take away his love for Rhaenyra. Admitting that Baela and Daemon are practically twins will not kill you, it does not take away from the love that he had for Rhaena, Aegon, Viserys and Rhaenyra’s boys. Love is infinite, it can be shared.

I think we can all ask ourselves, even if the showrunners were just so determined to show us that Rhaenyra and Daemon are the romantic heart of the story, why they didn't feel the need to frame Harwin as Rhaenyra's second choice in the same way they did to Laena for Daemon.

I think we can answer it pretty easily.

Vhagar's story is so tragic when you think about how she went from being bonded to a woman of historically unparalleled power who, for all her flaws, never stooped to weaponizing the misogynistic concept of legitimacy, to a man who's implied to be the embodiment of positive masculinity, to a girl who took to the skies after escaping a child marriage and then lived to forge a loving bond and powerful alliance with the woman who would have finally restored Targaryen women to full power, only to die bonded to a man who was the anti-thesis to all of that.

I know that Daemon killing Aemond with the other symbol of Visenya, and the fact that Daemon is compared to Visenya, is so often just seen as House Targaryen "cannibalizing" itself with the usual disregard for which parts were cannibalizing what and why, but it's so hard not to see it as an angry Visenya cursing Aemond, and everything he represents, from beyond the grave.

welcome back to my “uh what? everything went well actually” AUs: Aemon became King after his father, he died peacefully of old age, but before made sure Rhaenys was going to be Queen after him. Laena is Princess of Dragonstone and absolutely didn’t die of childbirth. Dowager Queen Jocelyn is wearing her sister Alysanne’s crown :> Look I’m not saying this version is more interesting than what happened I just wanted to draw them together ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Whilst Princess Rhaenyra misliked her stepmother, Queen Alicent, she became fond and more than fond of her good-sister Lady Laena. With Driftmark and Dragonstone so close, Daemon and Laena oft visited with the princess, and her with them.

Targaryen month day 11, favorite Targaryen+non Targaryen dynamic, Laena and Rhaenyra  😊 😊 😊 Even if Laena is half Targaryen so uhhh I just wanted to draw them ok,,,
