Part of a series of flash stories intended as a supplement to my story Safe Harbor. Context for this post is here.
As Jimmy headed to the bar where Bonnie worked, he could feel the anger pulsing through his veins as though it were the only thing keeping his heart beating. There didn't need to be a reason for the rage to boil up within him; the feeling came naturally, often in the absence of reason. He wasn't sure why he was feeling that way tonight, but then he was never one for self-reflection.

Ginny stood in the guest bedroom waiting for evidence that her grandson Johnny had finally fallen asleep. Once he let out a soft snore, she slowly crept out the door, closing it softly behind her. Johnny had been having problems sleeping ever since his mom started working nights. He wouldn't fall asleep at his grandma's house unless she was there watching him.

The Messer Home
Here is the Messer family home. Destiny and Chantal share a room while Trinity and Johnny have their own rooms. There is a shed in the back where Jimmy likes to go to get away from the kids. I will be posting more information about my upcoming story Safe Harbor throughout the week, including an introduction to the other family in the story tomorrow.
Meet the Messer Family
The Messers are one of two families who will be featured in my upcoming story, Safe Harbor, which is set in Evergreen Harbor. Issues such as income, neighborhood changes, inquality, family dynamics, and safety will affect how each of the families thrives--or simply survives.
The Messers live in a run down house in the neglected neighborhood of Grim's Quarry. The family is comprised of mom Bonnie dad Jimmy, their young daughter Trinity, and Bonnie's older children from previous relationships. Flighty Bonnie works as a bartender and must keep her family afloat while irresponsible Jimmy searches for work (and "tries" to stay out of trouble). Bonnie's oldest child, Destiny, is a high school senior who is often expected to watch her younger siblings, a responsibility she is growing to resent. The twins, Chantal and John, have never met their father...and Bonnie has no intention of letting that happen any time soon. Struggles with identity and fear of abandonment make their father's absence especially hard on the pair.
I will be sharing more information about the Messer family and other characters in Safe Harbor in the coming weeks. Safe Harbor is planned to start in late March.
(Sorry for the bad preview pic, I need more family portrait poses!)
