Earth-Shaker. Water-Churner. Athens was in a state of disrepair by the god of the seas. He could no more make sense of the night before than the people of Athens could. Their beloved city under siege by the god who would not live the water from their city steps. Bjorn sat at the edge of the beach, bearing his glassy eyes at the temple of his mother. Yet, again, there was nothing but the rain pelting down over his pale skin.
“Bjorn,”
Torvi has come. She’s sitting there beside him. She should be in the clouds with his brother Ubbe. She sits with him, the winged serpent twisting up her arm and shielding her from much of the onslaught of water. Torvi turns toward him, her gentle fingers about his arm. Bjorn’s cold eyes bore into the direction of the temple.
“Where has she gone,” he states, then clamps his jaw together to look toward the statue of his mother. Her shield is raised, blocking her heart from a blow, with a shield of snakes. Or perhaps, love. He should so like to be like that-- blocked off from emotion. He feels his heart hardening as if he was but a bystander to the night before.
“Far away,” Torvi says in her measured and patient voice. Soft as wheat in the fields Bjorn was drowning in rainwater.
“Where,” he grows in heat and hatred. His hands become fists. Torvi’s mouth twists into a frown, and Torvi reaches for his hands. Gentle strokes do nothing to quench his irate hissing.
“To the land of the Aithiopians with Sigurd. In the forest of Aithos,” Torvi explains.
