Niche form of ableism that I never see talked about, probably because nobody really knows about it:
Whenever people find out you have synesthesia, they immediately start grilling you to find out what certain sounds or colors or whatever are like for you. Please stop asking me what the color purple tastes like when you don’t even know what form of synesthesia I have, or if that’s something I even feel like telling you. It’s weird and uncomfortable, and I am not putting on a show for you.
Synesthesia isn’t a party trick, but it gets treated like one, and it’s fuckin’ annoying.
Some people say synesthesia isn’t a “real” disability and I’m not interested in that particular discourse monster, but, like, people definitely act like fucking weirdos about it, and I’m not sure what else to call it besides ableism? Especially since it’s extremely common in autistic people (which I also am) and can affect sensory processing stuff.
