No funny comments today, just a shout out to purple-confusion

They always reblog these folklore post with the funniest fucking tags

I love them and I also love everyone who comments or likes these

I love making these and the fact that people like these makes me really fucking happy

Anyway!

Baba Milenka's Stories present:

The Book of Magic

from bulgarian slavic folklore

There once was a young man, whose mother was a witch.

They lived a good life together with his father and siblings.

But soon their peaceful life was interrupted

For a war had begun

Motivated, as youth often are, the young man joined the army.

Heartbroken, but understanding, his mother gave him some of her most powerful and precious magic items

As a someone studying magic, he happily accepted the gifts.

And he went to war.

Sometime later, he was stationed in a small town

and in this small town he took a lover.

Although she was a "shameful woman",

that's what Baba Milenka called sex workers

the witch's son had taken her as a lover and even asked her to marry him.

And one day, when he was out on patrol,

she came to visit him.

Upon finding his room empty, she decided to wait for him

Looking for something to do, she picked up one of his many books.

Opening it, she saw it was only a list of names.

After reading for a little amount of time,

she raised her head and saw that the room was full of diabolical looking beings.

Stuck with terror and not knowing what to do, she continued to read.

Again she read and again she looked and again the spirits had increased.

And again she read and having finished the book, looked around again.

The number of spirits had increased so much that there was barely space for them. Some even sat on each other's shoulder and they all watched her every move

She saw that the situation was serious, so she shut the book and shut her eyes and waited anxiously for her lover to return.

As soon as she shut the book, the spirits rushed forward, crying

"Give us work to do... quickly!!!"

After thinking for a second, she said

"Clean all the baths in the town and fill them with warm, clean water."

The spirits flew away and returned two minutes later.

"It is done! Give us work to do... quickly!"

"Pull down the Governor's house, brick by brick for during the day he mocks my sisters and I."

The spirits flew away but returned two minutes later demanding more work.

"Build up the Governor's house back up the way it was before, for during the night he pays my sisters and I."

The spirits flew away but returned two minutes later demanding more work.

"Go and count every grain of sand that lies on the bottom of the river, every every drop of water and every fish that swims within it, from it's source to it's mount."

Again, the spirits flew away but this time they took only a minute to return

Thus before the young woman could think of a new task, the old one had already been finished.

And when she took a moment to think,

they threatened her with instant death if she did not give them something to do. Becoming exhausted and with no sign of her lover's return, she began to try and think of ways to be rid of the spirits. Then she remembered that when she was reading, the spirits did not bother her. But as she began to read the book again, more spirits appeared. Restless and insulted, the spirits became more violent.

Shouting or pulling at her whenever she hesitated on a word or paused for a rest

"Give us work to do! Give us work!"

Seeing this was making things worse, a thought occurred to her.

Turning the book around,

She began to read the book backwards.

To her relief and utter delight,

she saw the number of spirits decreasing.

She read and read until she had read them all away.

A little while later, her lover returned from patrol

And she told him all that had happened.

"It is fortunate."

He said while holding her tenderly

"That you began to read the book backwards. For had you not read them away by midnight, they would have eaten you."

The End

I am tired.

Shout out to u/Real-Exercise5212 and their lovely ball python named Lamia (may she rest in peace)

Baba Milenka's Tales presents

Lamias and why you shouldn't summon them

but here is how you can summon them.

Ok first off, what is a Lamia?

the slavic lamia, not the greek one

Well, they are evil

Very very VERY Evil.

Lamias hate all living things but they really hate humans

They will be destroy crops,

eat chickens and destroy barns and houses

but they stay away from fire

For it reminds them of dragons, their biggest threat

And they are extremely hard to kill, only heros (aka humans+), dragons and gods can kill them

The Lamia has the head of a dog

and a mouth big enough to swallow a person

It has large teeth

four feet ending in long, sharp claws

and a long, twisted tail which ends with a horn.

It has huge eyes

It has wing with which it flies fast and high up

When it flies, it creates great winds

The Lamia lives in tiny caves or holes

they gain more heads, the longer they have lived

[Picture of a Saint on a white horse, facing the right. He is holding a spear and using it to pierce a creature at the feet of the horse. There are arrows pointing from a few tiny pieces of text to the picture.]

St. George

This is not a dragon.

That is a Lamia.

The picture that every fucking Bulgarian seems to have in their house

Please Do Not Summon A Lamia

Here is how to summon a Lamia.

Ingredients that you will need

A knife you are planning on never using again

A living snake

A horn of an ox

With the knife, you must behead the snake in one blow

then you must stuff the head into the horn

and then with the snake in the horn,

you must then stab the head with the knife

this must then be buried for 40 days

Often the Lamia was summoned for war

but the summoner is always the first to die.

A Lamia will not take sides and will kill indiscriminately

Only summon a Lamia if you have nothing else to lose

End text.

Us, arriving to Austria to a tiny family hotel owned by an elderly lady

Us: speak only limited German

Lady: barely speaks English

Us:

Lady:

Lady: Czech? Slovak?

Us: Czech

Lady, to herself: Czech, that's a Slavic language right

Lady: understand Yugoslavian?

Us:

Us: yeah that works

Shit like this can really only happen in Europe. Reminds me of the time I took my best shot at ordering at a restaurant in Spain in spanish. The closest language to spanish that I actually speak is latin.

Waiter: Germany?

Me: No, Czechia.

Waiter, in a heavily accented but intelligible Czech: Why didn’t you say so before! We get you guys here all the time!

Já v roce 2019 na Ukrajině: OK, takže když použiju tohle staročeský slovo, přidám polský sloveso, své chabé znalosti záhoráčtiny a řeknu to s ruskym přízvukem, tak to projde.

[Me in 2019 in Ukraine: ok so if i use this Old Czech word, add a Polish verb, my poor knowledge of the Záhorie dialect of Slovak and say it with a Russian accent, it might pass]

Reminds me of the time when we were in Poland and I tried to order a burger using a truly unholy mix of Slovak, Russian and Ostrava dialect (which in itself is like an unholy mix of Czech and Polish).

I did get the burger

[#my grandpa called this "Slavic Esperanto"]

I know Ukrainians who can do this on purpose and masterfully, and it was mind-blowing to hear a speech as immediately understandable to an audience of native speakers of three different native Slavic languages, not just two languages as is common

During one student exchange I (a Pole) got acquainted with two students from Czechia and Russia. At first we talked in English or German, but after a while we’ve noticed, that we could understand each other’s native languages just fine. And if some word was unknown in one language, another one had the right synonym.

*Each of us talking in their mother tongue*

Me: Bla bla bla.

Russian: I don’t know this “bla”.

Czech: Oh, we have “bla”! We also call it “that”!

Russian: Oh I know “that”! It’s a very old version of “this”.

Me: Oh, we have “this” too, but it means something slightly different.

German acquaintance: Was für nen Scheiß zieht ihr da ab? o_O

the reason there aren't slavic people in the bible is that they wouldn't have been surprised or awed to hear the disciples speak in tongues and be understood by people of many nations at once

Translation: How do western european perverts imagine Slavic girls to be like: Me and the womenfolk of Moravia:

This is now officially a Slavic humor blog

[The first picture is of Rapunzel from Wreck It Ralph 2, looking a lot like she did in her own movie: long blonde hair, green eyes and stick thin. The second picture is of Fiona her mother and other princesses from Shrek 3. They look taller with wider arms and a lot more instances of darker hair and eyes.]

Thigh high socks and femboy stuff used to be heavily associated with trans people, but due to its “anime” aesthetic and popularity on YouTube internet fascists have latched unto it. The same is starting to happen now with cottage core which originates in a desire to push back away from alienation born of capitalism by like living in a house with your close ones where you grow your own stuff, away from the city. Fascists are using the same aesthetic to promote traditionalist values, in a way that’s like, they attract unsuspecting people by using the aesthetic, dilutes in their nauseating ideologies in a discrete way and progressively radicalise people. Same for ecofascism, they use the general climate of fear and anger at governments’ inaction regarding climate change to propagate their ideas on eugenics among other things.

Basically they know how to identify codes and trends that resonate among the younger internet users on the most popular social networks, repeat them while adding in their ideologies and thus slowly recruit more people.

This is exactly why people need to start fighting and taking back their things, whether it be their comfort places, culture, or symbolism.

It’s so nauseating seeing something like this happen constantly, and it does. From minuscule things like memes and online culture to more serious like cultural symbols and ideals, fascists and the alt right in general keep stealing it, and instead saying “that’s enough”, people react with “well, it can’t be helped, we now can’t use that anymore.” and let them completely perverse something that belonged to others completely to serve their shitty ideals.

Ask yourself, how often do you internally feel red lights go off when you see, lets say, pagan Slavic symbols like the kolovrat? Or a lot of Nordic mythology symbols and runes? Do you associate these with the current neo-nazi and alt-right movement? As a Slav, do you know how much this fucking hurts? They stole from us. They stole our culture. I refuse to let them do that anymore. I imagine a lot of Scandinavian countries feel the same about their own culture being perversed.

Remember the “ok” hand sign suddenly turning in to a dog whistle? Remember how Pepe, against all wishes of the original author who created him as a loving cool character, turned in to a symbol of the alt-right? Think back and remember each time this has happened and realize just how often it does.

I see it happening as well, I see the people worming their way in to the witch community and trying to make it the same way. Look at TERFs, they’re trying to appropriate the Witch aesthetic for their own. Fuck them. They don’t deserve it. I won’t allow it.

Stop letting them steal. Stop letting them get away with it. Take the shit they stole back. It isn’t theirs.

Don’t Let THEM Immanentize the Eschaton!

Neo-nazis tried to latch onto the punk movement - hey, it likes noise and rage and not following rules, so it’s perfect for them, right? Fuck no. Punk was and is anti-racist.

Remember that tolerance is not a moral precept - it’s a peace treaty. People are tolerated when and while they agree to tolerate others. People who are actively exclusionist, people who want to drive out others or hurt them - lose access to the tolerance TOU.

And tell those assholes they’re not welcome. That they should find a new hobby if they’re not interested in the values that inspired this one. That “pretty house pictures” may be welcome but accompanying messages implying that the residents need to be white and Christian are not.

It’s hard work, because yelling at people rarely works. Instead, you have to foster the kind of community you want, so that bigots won’t feel welcome. When they make their “hey it’s just a joke” racist or transphobic comment, nobody laughs, and someone says “ugh.” When they use a culture’s symbols to connect to their bigoted ideas, someone says, oh, the traditional meaning is ____ and the people who live in that culture wouldn’t agree with your biases.

Don’t let them take away the symbols and hobbies that inspire you to be a better person.
