So... I technically drew this 3 years ago but forgot to post it. I think I was going to clean up the end and make a nice recap, but I ran out of steam and then just left it as a wip for years. I got reminded of it because I was talking to a friend about how to draw wheelchairs today.

This covers most of what I view as the most common errors when it comes to drawing characters who use manual wheelchairs. I hope it helps you a lot.

Image description is in alt text, but there is a back up image description under the cut in case that does not work for some reason

I forgot I have to be active here so here’s my Twitter tutorial on how to draw folds I made a while back to help a friend!

[ID: a square with a smiling face on it has a speech bubble. “Hi, I'm a piece of cloth! What kind? I don't know, maybe I'm...”

Below are drawn several examples of sleeves. Each version is drawn on a thinner arm and a thicker arm. There is text next to each, describing them.

“Thick! With only a FEW folds!

Tip: Sometimes a 'bump' is all it takes to suggest a fold for thick stuff!

Examples: sweaters, hoodies, wool (the thickest!), fleece, denim”

“Thin! With a lot of folds and bumps!

Tip: Thin stuff usually has more lines that 'wrap' around what's underneath!

Examples: rayon, cotton, crepe, ballet skirt, summer dress”

“Smooth! With 'squiggly' folds!

Tip: Smooth stuff folds tends to 'loop' back to where they start!

Examples: silk, velvet, satin, bamboo cotton, luxury stuff”

“soft ~ ! With 'round' folds!

Tip: unlike smooth stuff, soft stuff usually doesn't have many 'squiggles' or solid lines in between!

Examples: down jackets, fur, fleece, washed linen, polyester”

“Stiff! With 'angular' folds!

Tip: Most of the folds tend to look 'triangular' – assuming they even fold at al

Examples: raincoats, new denim, canvas, suits, new linen shirt”

“P. S. : I avoided talking about loose versus tight clothing since whatever is loose on one person (A) might not be as loose on a different person (B) but it's still important to learn about these types of stuff”

Now a stick figure asks, “So uh, what happens of the clothes are like... smooth and thin? Or thick and soft?”

The square of fabric answers, “Then Do Both!! :D”

“Other cool examples!

Rayon is kinda flowy ~

Fancy kimonos tend to be thick!

Even though this is technically 2 parts of 1 dress, one part I'd considered stiff while the other part I'd smooth!”

The first two examples were on a thin body. The third was on a fat body with a photo of a real person wearing a similar dress for comparison.

A drawing of a person with glasses and shoulder length hair smiles and gives a thumbs up. Their speech bubble reads, “Don't forget to study hard & have fun! @silver_sora”

End description.]

on the geometry lessons you probably ignored because you were so artsy (but that’s ok and not so much your fault because your nerd teacher probably didn’t know this could be useful for arts)

Also tip: two things of the same height will intersect the horizon at the same point not matter how close/far away, i.e. if the horizon intersects a person’s hips, someone else who it the same height but closer will be bigger on the page but also have the horizon intersect their hips.

Hello, artist. Nice art you have there. You know what would make it better? Crabs.

But crabs are hard to draw, you say. I agree. That’s why I teamed up with @jopabinia@JaviPaleobio and @Werner_deGier to make this cheat sheet so you too, can #InsertAnInvert into your artwork with confidence.

#InsertAnInvert is a series of invertebrate drawing guides done in collaboration with actual experts (like, literal Dr. Crabs and Dr. Cephalopods and all that) so if you could give them a follow on twitter that’d be swell.

High-res PDFs available for free on my rarely updated Patreon. Absolutely no money required. I just think Patreon is useful for attaching PDFs.

*cracks open a bag of candy and a jar of salt* SO, HALLOWEEN PSA TIME

[ID: an infographic about how to not whitewash dead or undead characters

Ah, the Halloween season! time for skeletons brawling, witches brewing… and a little talk about whitewashing the undead.

Let’s start off with the basics of what happens to the skin when you die. Yes it does PALE, but paled skin does not equal white skin. You can’t lose pigmentation (it’s in your DNA which, shocker, still influences your appearance when you’re dead).

What DOES happen is the skin losing flush and drying out, which greys the complexion! (veins and other factors can also give a blue-grey tint!) The person still looks pretty gone, but dark skin does not vanish. it’s basically an extreme version of getting no sun.

Which means THIS is WHITEWASHING and is not in any way accurate or okay: illustration of a dark skinned black girl turning into a pale grey zombie, and another illustration of her turning into a white vampire

Just because they’re on the hunt for brains or have no blood in their body, that does not justify taking away the pigmentation in a PoC’s skin. Even if it is “a stylistic choice” skin doesn’t work that way. It’s uncomfortable AND actually looks worse than if you just took the time to come up with something in the same tone and shade of their original skin colour.

“But how will I make my characters look recognizably undead? I don’t want to make them all white?!”

Well here’s a handy-dandy mini-chart of cool undead PoC skin tones!

the chart shows PoC becoming greyed, unnatural, or dulled versions of themselves when becoming undead. The colours in the charts all maintain the same tones/shades as the original skin tone, just reflecting magic or a lack of blood. A medium-skinned brown person becomes a medium grey, a medium purple, or a cool-toned reddish-brown. A dark skinned black person with red undertones becomes very dark grey, dark green, or a slightly lighter red-brown. a light skinned brown person becomes a light grey, a bright purple, or a green-brown.

And that’s only three examples from a multitude of skin tones! (I can’t do them all however much I would like to…)

an easy trick for trying to figure out a nice settling place is to use “screen” or “multiply” to place blue/grey over the existing skin tone!

if you can’t use that, just try your best to stay within the same range of tones as the original colour! remember: there isn’t an excuse for whitewashing. take time and look at the things you draw, and be wary, a’ight?

Now go draw some rad monsters! Happy Halloween, don’t be a scrub /end ID]

For any visually impaired writers/artists who follow us, here is an image description of the above infographic about how to properly describe dead characters! Applies to both drawing and writing, dead and undead, etc.

collab with @riverkdraws on how to draw arabs!

as arabs, we see little to no representation in media and when there is, it's often offensive caricatures and stereotypes. we can't fix the world with one art tutorial, but educating more artists will hopefully make a difference.

most importantly: if you have a question about the arab world, or arabic culture, ask an arab!

arabs feel free to add onto this, nonarabs please reblog!

How to draw Afro textured 4c hair - an explanation/Tutorial

For those of you that don’t know what 4c hair is, 4c hair is a hair texture type that contains coils to small and tight that the hair appears to be more puffy rather than curly ( like to photo below ) this is in NO WAY to be confused with curly hair. there is a drastic difference.

As a black artist that primarily draws characters with 4c hair, I’ve been asked many times to do a tutorial on 4c hair so here we go~

before we get into 4c hair, lets take a moment to fully understand it by talking about hair texture in a general sense first

let’s take a look at this example of straight hair vs curly hair ( 1 type straight hair vs 3 type curly hair )

If you take a moment to compare the two you’ll notice straight hair is flat, it has no texture. Straight hair perfectly hangs down similar to liquid-like silk. It’s lack of curl pattern is the reason as to why it hangs perfectly flat.

curly hair on the other hand doesn’t lie down flat and silky like straight hair, It’s more thick. Curly hair in it’s raw and unstyled state has a trapezoid like shape this is because the sides of the hair spread more outward.

So why is this? Why is straight hair flat and curly hair thick?

the answer to that question is a thing called piling up. When it comes to hair texture, the shape of the hair strands aren’t the only thing that matters, its how the strands coexist with each other, Curly hair strands coexist by piling up on top each other.

moisture also effects hair texture too, different hair types absorbs moisture differently, thus the thickness of each hair type is different.

…..soooo, how does this all relate to how to draw 4c hair??

Well let’s take a look at the drawing below. Notice how the arrows go outward more as the hair texture gets curlier. As we’ve already discussed, this is because hair piles up, The curlier the hair texture, the more it piles up on each other, the bigger it gets, the more outward the arrows go.

Out of any hair texture, 4C hair has the most curls. Because of this, the hair piles up on each other so much that it doesn’t lie down flat like straight hair, nor does it make a trapezoid like shape like curly hair, it instead becomes more cloud like.❤️

This is what you need to take into account when it comes to drawing 4C hair.

Think of it as piling up a bunch of cotton balls on each other. The most cotton on top of top to lead to a bigger patch of  cotton. this is 4c hair.

How to not draw 4c hair:

Garnet fanart. Let’s talk about Garnet Fanart. I notice a trend that when artists draw Garnet from Steven universe, her hair texture is usually changed to 3 type curly like texture. This subtle form of White washing has confused me because this is inaccurate.

Garnet’s hair is in the shape of a cube. Though 3 type hair piles up on each other, it isn’t curly nor thick enough for their hair to stay in the shape of a cube. Curly hair lies down more than 4c hair. So garnet’s hair being in the shape of a cube is a dead giveaway that it is 4C. Why do you think hairstyles like flat tops are usually seen on black men with 4c hair? It’s because, the 4c hair texture is thick and strong enough to stay in whatever shape you put it in.

please, if you’re drawing a character with 4c hair, avoid drawing it like curly 3 type hair, this is very anti-black and texturist.

So, how do you draw 4c hair?

honestly, its the most easy thing in the world

i wanna clarify that blobby looking 4c drawings ( like the one on the top left ) can work depending on how cartoony your art style is.

Another thing that I want to greatly clarify when it comes to drawing 4C hair is, YOU. DONT. NEED. TO. DRAW. EVERY. HAIR. STRAND!…..like, seriously. I’ve gotten many messages about how 4C hair is hard to draw, and it’s always left me confused; but then I find out that the same people that have trouble drawing 4C hair, attempt to draw every single strand of hair. This is unnecessarily time consuming because it’s merely impossible to get every single detail down, especially when you have a simple cartoon style. 4C hair does not require much effort, all you’re doing is drawing lumps. It’s that simple, nothing more nor nothing less.

The reason why I greatly advise all of you to avoid drawing every single hair strand is because in real life, when you look at a 4C textured Afro, your eyes don’t pick up on each individual hair strand like straight or curly hair. 4C hair, appears to be more undefined and cloud like, so attempting to draw each and every individual strand is unnecessary and will most likely end up looking inaccurate.

Anyways! that’s it for now! there will be a part 2 to this tutorial that will come out next week! i hope you guys have learned from this and apply it to your black character in your art!~

SHOUT OUT TO MY WRITER HOMIES WITH MUSLIM OCS/CHARACTERS;

1. WEARING A SHAWL TO BATTLE IS THE EQUIVALENT OF HAVING GIRLS FIGHT IN STILLETTOS.

Just so you know, this is what I’m talking about;

-Is it bad-ass? Abso-fucking-lutely. Is it Practical? Not a chance in hell. Especially not if it’s silk. If it’s cotton, you are skating on thin fucking ice. That bitch will NOT stay on. It barely stays on with me just walking down the street to Walmart. Wielding axes and rifles and swords and daggers? I PROMISE you it will not do the job it’s expected to-WHICH IS TO COVER THE HAIR. (Some muslim girls dont wear them-and that’s fine. But those who DO do it to completely cover the hair in public. Is it ~Aesthetic~ to see the flyaway hairs in battle? Sure, but those aren’t usually practical either. )Consider instead;

sport shawls

-For one thing, it’s actually DESIGNED to be worn to atheletic activities. Archers tuck hems into the collar of their shirts so they don’t get in the way, and track runners pins (ill get to this bit later) them down into the shirts to prevent flyaway bits and to stop them from getting slapped in the face. It’s breathable, stretchy, presentable without being attention seeking.

Bawals

In a pinch, bawals work just as well-as long as you specify that they are COTTON. Unlike the shawl, which are rectangular, bawals are SQUARE, and thus easier to manipulate, fold and pin down. If you wear it right, they carry an equal aesthetic value to shawls, and come in plenty of pretty patterns as well.

2. I’m not sure about the USA, but the girls I know wear this underneath the headscarf;

Does it kinda look like a beanie? It sort of works like a beanie too. Hair is slippery. It tucks in any extra hair you might miss just by wearing the headscarf, its harder to pull down and on the event the shawl DOES fall down, your hair is still not exposed. It protects the ears-which is important even on a daily basis, because pins, headphones and any other headgear that might pinch them. It comes in plenty of designs, including ones that has open backs to allow long hair and ponytails.

3.SPEAKING OF PINS; I’M TALKING ABOUT THESE BAD BOYS;

BROOCHES

though , i suppose most of y’all are most familiar with safety pins, right?

what’s the difference? Well, if your oc/character is an athlete, it’s actually LEAST likely they’ll be wearing SAFETY PINS. They’re cheap and super easy to buy in bulk, true, but they also SUPER easy to wear out even with the smallest amount of strenuous activity. Between the three of ‘em, I’d put the brooches as the best option to wear in battle because 1) it has a large surface area, thus hurts less when pressed on with heavy items, which includes bag straps and weapons, (pins are sharp and can poke you painfully);  and 2) more secure-the latch is covered by the gaudy jewellery above, and theyre usually smaller and tighter. Stays on the stubbornnest, even when headscarf is pulled. very roughly. I’m saying that even the cheapest brooches will allow the shawl to be ripped apart before even letting it go.

3. They probably ponytail their hair. Because Come On, guys.

Anyway it’s been bothering me and I just thought if yall could bother knowing the difference between skin tones for POC you could bother with muslim practicalities too. Or something

I checked the website link, and it isn’t a safe place to download things on, it is full of fake download buttons and images that lead to the same place with a fake download file, has comments from a bunch of bots, and fake information, and it wants you to get a “7 day trial” while having an unsecure website with no ssl certification.
