As several others have already said in the notes, this is Jerome Robbins’ “Mistake Waltz,” and it is GLORIOUS. And so much respect for the dancers, because having to do something intentionally wrong is frequently harder than trying to do it right.

ballet is so funny bc they will be like ”oh the ballerina is retiring… this is her farewell before she goes off to greener pastures to spend the rest of her days… she has worked a long career and has earned her rest…” and she will be like 31 and opera is so funny bc they will be like ”hes a promising young bass!!! just starting out all wide eyed and bushy tailed!! we’re excited to see where his career will go” and he will be like 47

I've got a friend who just retired from Ballet at age 35 in 2020, and now in 2022 she's the understudy Lead Sporano. The Ballerina-to-Primadonna Pipeline is real.

It's because when AFAB people hit 30ish, there's a notable change in the flexibility and resilence of their joints, which means their feet won't doo Ballet anymore but thier voices are finally maturing.

So this reminds me of a book I’ve had since I was in the first grade called “ Dancing in the Wings” by Debbie Allen and illustrated by Kadir Nelson.

Y’all this book is amazing.

It’s about a young girl called “Sassy” who’s wants a lead role in a ballet performance at the Washington DC summer dance festival with a joining russian school but since she is taller and harder to pick up then the other she’s afraid she be in the wings again. Her uncle and family support her and she tries out anyway in her golden yellow leotard to stand out.

I won’t spoil the rest. But every single person in the book is a person of color for those looking for some representation books!

This book is amazing and the above performance just screamed that book to me. So I had to share it.

Odette & Odile - Swan Lake

I couldn’t resist drawing them as ballerinas. One of the best parts of Barbie’s Swan Lake is their use of real ballet choreography. <3

Anyway these designs are based on the first decade or so of ballet costumes/ballerina’s from Swan Lake. There’s only one illustration-type image of the original production’s Odette but after that there are a number of photographs of the different productions & it’s really cool.

Also at this time we have the series of Degas paintings of ballerinas so using all these things created these designs! The length of the skirt is on the longer side, like the original production image, while it has Swan motifs at the hips like later Odette costumes, and the bow-waist like a Degas ballerina. I had fun.

I don’t think this counts as dancing.  Or even skipping really.  It’s more of an exagerated waddle

So. Let me tell you about the day I took this video. It was the 1 year anniversary of my open heart surgery. It’s about a year old, and I’d say it’s pretty safe to say I’ve improved since then. In case you don’t agree, let’s take a look at some more at my exaggerated waddling.

*rolls across the floor*

Clearly I am immobilized by my own mass.

Oh wait… that’s not it, is it? It sort of seems like the opposite. Almost as though the ability to dance is based on strength, effort and passion and not on being skinny. Strange concept I know, let’s see if you can wrap your tiny little mind around it. 

not to mention she wasnt waddling at all.. That was clearly a jete, chasse, and assemble.. not waddling. ballet…

Yo. Professional ballerina speaking here.

Clearly she is performing a saute arabesque, chasse, step-step, assemble devant with arms in fifth. 

And as a teacher too, I can’t find much technically wrong with it at all. 

Which means not only is she a gifted dancer, she has a wonderful technical foundation that she is executing properly and with lovely mannerism.

Being a ballerina isn’t about how much you weigh. Give me this girl ANY day for a student or dancer to work with. Clearly she has the knowledge and the passion, which means she will be a joy to work with. 

Also, for those of you criticizing, you clearly have NO idea how difficult it is to execute a develope ecarte derriere the way she is at the barre in one of her later photos. This takes YEARS of dedicated training, as well as extensive natural facility, such as turnout, which she clearly demonstrates here. 

So maybe before you peons thinking you’re masters of ballet judge dancers based on weight, you should actually learn about ballet and technique. Because if you had, you’d recognize that this girl clearly has technique—unlike your basic asses.

As someone who loves dancing and is overweight… this post is awe inspiring.

if i remember correctly? the little clip at the start of the post was like, right after she had some health issue or possibly surgery?  and was recovering still.  the rest were when she was back at 100%

and she is Fucking Amazing.  to hell with anyone who tries fat shaming her.

Something about hearing the footsteps involved in ballet makes it seem very real. But unlike when it's audible over the music, hearing it when there's no music doesn't make it lose any of the magic.

Look at the body control these guys have.

I also love the uneven socks to help people see the footwork better.

I know one MMA fighter in NYC who took ballet lessons to improve his coordination and control.

He thought it was very effective.

The thing about this is, you can barely see their muscles straining from effort. The effort to keep each other and themselves balanced, definitely, but that guy’s hand is barely shaking. The amount of training and strength and balance to go into this is fucking insane.
