What people think why i became a bookbinder: Oh she wants to explore her artistic horizon with those pretty leather bound books of hers. She even gives them out as gifts to her friends. It most likely helps her with anxiety or maybe she just wanted a more special costume made notebook.
Why I actually became a bookbinder: I just illegally downloaded and printed out several of my favourite fanfics and books and started binding them into books cuz I love reading them but looking at screens for too long gives me headaches.

Okay, so.
If you wanna bind fanfiction, this will probably help:
It takes your pdf and arranges the pages based on paper size and how many leaves you’re using per signature, etc. so you don’t have to figure out how to arrange them so that the signatures come out in a useful fashion.
If you wanna bind books, fanfiction or otherwise….. SeaLemon is an okay starting point if you want to try bookbinding with stuff you already have around the house. She’s accessible, makes a really good video, and she’s very soothing to watch.
but she does things SO WEIRDLY sometimes. and so much of her work is an arts-and-crafts-camp feel.
Like… don’t…. don’t use dental floss. Just don’t. Embroidery floss (or whatever “cotton craft thread” she’s got lately) will work as long as you understand that the project is not going to be particularly sturdy long-term. (by long-term I mean generations. waxed linen is what bookbinders have used for centuries because it… holds up for centuries)
Same with using glue sticks- they’ll work in the short term but the book will not hold up to being battered around in your backpack.
paper grain direction is actually important if you want your book to stay flat. depending on paper size and your printer you may not have a choice, but if the pages are bunchy and weird after pressing, that’s probably why.
you really can fold the entire signature at the same time! Really! I promise, you don’t have to fold each individual sheet and then stack them! I have literally never done that, because it’s 5 times the work! I have no idea why she does that!
the one time I saw her do a corner in vinyl I was internally screaming. Mushing it down until it mostly sticks is shoddy work. miter it and make it tidy.
I haven’t watched any of hers in over a year, so I may well be missing quite a bit, but there ya go. For others to check out, uhhh. I don’t really have any to recommend personally, since I don’t watch terribly many. I haven’t tried to learn a new style in quite some time and when I do, I don’t go to videos. give me written instructions that I can peruse and re-read 16 times without having to pause and restart and pause and restart and pause and restart. I’m old and hate having to do that.
HOWEVER. Tae over at @buildingbooks strongly recommends Sage Reynolds and MHR. Tae does some absolutely gorgeous work herself, so I rather trust the recommendation.
Oh Gosh yes! Please check out the videos supplied by sage Reynolds and mhr. They are informative and so easily followed even if you’re a complete beginner.
You will also likely end up with something far closer to what you have in your mind :3
