Shichigosan in the Edo period
An event to wish for the healthy growth of children.
It was not called ‘Shichi-Go-San’, but different ceremonies were held for each age group. They change their hairstyle and kimono and take the first step towards adulthood.
A time when becoming an adult was difficult.
The average life expectancy in the Edo period is said to have been in the 30s.
One of the factors contributing to such a low average is the high infant mortality rate. It was not uncommon for them to die before they reached the age of seven.
江戸時代の七五三
子供の健やかな成長を願う行事。
「七・五・三」とは呼ばず、それぞれの年齢で異なる儀式を行いました。髪型や着物を変えて、大人への一歩を踏み出します。
大人になるのが難しかった時代
江戸時代の平均寿命は三十歳台と言われます。
平均値がこれだけ低い要因の一つは、乳幼児の死亡率が高い事。七歳を迎える前に死んでしまうケースが珍しくなかったのです。
