The Embassy of France is deeply saddened by the news of Kazuo Umezu's death. Many people were horrified and fascinated at the same time by the art drawn out by the chaos of grotesqueness and beauty, horror and laughter, reality and unreality. His unique worldview was recognised by the Angoulême International Cartoon Festival, where he was awarded the Heritage Prize in 2018. May he rest in peace.
