This depicts a song I loved as a child. When the song started playing, my mind went to Yokohama, a city I had never been to.

Shichigosan in the Edo period
An event to wish for the healthy growth of children.
It was not called ‘Shichi-Go-San’, but different ceremonies were held for each age group. They change their hairstyle and kimono and take the first step towards adulthood.
A time when becoming an adult was difficult.
The average life expectancy in the Edo period is said to have been in the 30s.
One of the factors contributing to such a low average is the high infant mortality rate. It was not uncommon for them to die before they reached the age of seven.
Hitoshi Kiyohara (1896-1956) ‘Shichi-Go-San’
<Origin of the Shichi-Go-San>.
Shichi-Go-San is held nationwide in autumn. Each age has its own meaning.
3 years of age: grown up enough to wear their hair.
Age 5: Ceremony to put on hakama for the first time.
Age 7: Fastening the obi and starting to wear a kimono.
The wish for the safe growth of the child is always the same.
Today, 15 November, is Shichi-Go-San Day. There is a theory that during the Genroku era (1688-1704), candy seller Shichibei in Asakusa started selling red and white stick candy, called Sennenameame, to wish people a long and healthy life.

My modest collection of vintage giraffes is sticking its neck out for you.
They’ve had many lives and many ages: cats I’ve met in my time travels.
Attributing human characteristics to animals and things: my bizarre collection of a thousand anthropomorphism images.
I’ve collected some weird vintage bird imagery, from bird hats to bird people, ghost birds to giant birds.
Fly by night.
