Felt and the Cosmere

Khyrindor: Was Felt cosmere-aware during Era 1?
Brandon Sanderson: Um...Yes.
Khyrindor: Was he directly involved in the interplanetary trade through the Pits?
Brandon Sanderson: He was involved. Whether directly is the right term or not I will not say.
Khyrindor: And is he part of the Seventeenth Shard?
Brandon Sanderson, carefully: He has been a member of various different groups and had various different motivations over the years.
I would not put him, right now, as a member of the Seventeenth Shard.
Khyrindor: As in, like, Stormlight Archive...?
Brandon Sanderson: As of Stormlight Archive Era, not a member of the Seventeenth Shard. Obviousl-
Um. Well. I won't go any further on that.

21 - Rusty

All I could think of was Wax running up staircase t the end of Bands of Mourning and noticing that he might be getting too old for this.

Also I just enjoy drawing him. and as an appendix to this: @curlytale and I were musing how Wax didn’t throw his back out in TLM, I suggested that surely Steris would have penned out a proper training schedule and then @priscellie threw in the idea of them doing scadrian yoga each morning. :D how could I not sketch this!?

building off of my earlier post about kell's scars, heres a rough sketch of how i imagine them (+ some notes!). couldn't quite get them to pop out as much as i'd like to (if it were fully rendered, i'd have added some more depth to them to show their layered effect) but overall i'm satisfied with it. aphantasia is a real bitch when it comes to having to imagine and draw things like this though :^P what're y'all's thoughts?

VOID I LOVE YOU SM

So spoilers for Mistborn: The Final Empire! If you haven't read it, please beware because under the cut, Here There Be Spoilers (and also beware, Very Long post under the cut!)

The big running theme in The Final Empire is trust. Who can one really trust? Is it worth it to put your life in the hands of other people? What says they won't betray you as soon as it becomes favorable to do so?

I’ve never quite understood the criticism for Mistborn that Vin is a “not like other girls” girl.

When literally her entire character arc is that she eventually learns that she can embrace her femininity in her own way and that it’s okay to be “like other girls” when she wants to be.

Even if she starts out a “not like other girls” girl (which I don’t really think she qualifies as in the first place), that’s the whole point.

I think Brandon Sanderson did an excellent job of dealing with the struggle that a lot of women face. Do I take on “masculine” traits because that is what gets me the outcome I desire? Do I embrace my femininity even if it earns me the scorn of my peers? Can I do both? Can I be a feminine woman who also is a leader?

Vin grapples with these questions through the whole series. That final ball scene in Hero of Ages was her really understanding that she is perfectly okay with being the warrior who also likes balls and dresses and that she doesn’t need to be one or the other to be herself.

Idk about the rest of you but that is a MASSIVELY important message for women to read.

So whenever I run across a BookTok girl talking about how they only read Mistborn and didn’t like how Vin was written I can’t help but think that by not finishing the series you didn’t understand that that was the whole point. It is unfair to judge how Vin fits into a feminist lens if you only read The Final Empire.

Her arc across the three books is SO important to me and it just doesn’t at all fit the typical “not like other girls” character.

One of my favorite moments in the series is in WoA when Elend tells Tindwyl that Vin isn't like other girls and Tindwyl is like "you know that also describes literally every girl in existence"

Honestly, Vin doesn't have much of a chance to explore her femininity until she joins up with Kel and the crew. When she's a street rat, her femininity is used as a weapon against her: her brother was very cruel about that though she doesn't dwell on that often.

So yah, I can see why wearing dresses and perfumes and going to balls is super weird for her; it's like someone from a poor family visiting an extravagant Vegas buffet.

and it's delightful to see how she works through complicated feelings about her ability to choose a new style for herself and retains these little touches, the scented soaps, the way she wears her hair a little longer, that beautiful dress at her final ball where she finally, FINALLY dances with Ellend.

This is another excellent point.

Why would Vin want to embrace femininity when it would have gotten her assaulted or killed? That is traumatizing and a difficult mindset to recover from.

Reupload with Img Descriptions courtesy of @cosmereplay !

My beautiful Dakimakura is finished, drawn by the lovely @solarfry who does a lot of work for me. You've seen her work before! Sub to her patreon and enjoy!

Reddit absolutely hated this. I uploaded it to r/mistborn and the amount of downvotes was insane, I couldn't believe how disgusted people were with this. I mean, they get half naked posts of female characters all the time, but Kelsier with just his shirt undone?

Anyways...I'm in love with it.

I shared this weeks on Reddit but since that site is a wreck, I’m sharing over here too. I identified which (100% free!) cape pattern the illustrations of Vin and Kelsier on the stickers in the Mistborn swag box heavily reference! You’d obviously have to do a bunch of tweaks, but I would recognize this torso wrap and dart situation anywhere, so it’s a solid starting point!
