thinking about a choose-your-own adventure game as one of the gods trying to disguise themself as a human (in modern Greece) and depending on the decisions you make, the more you narrow yourself down from Vague God who is Everything They Are, into one of their broad functions, into one of their broad functions w political alignments (maybe also depends on location in Greece?), into 1 or 2 local epithets as your choices become less and less broad.

with a more meme-y approach: If you go into Greek Ares, half of his options are like KILL or EAT RAW MEAT or LAUNCH THEM INTO THE STRATOSPHERE or MAKE LIKE YOU’RE HUNTING EVERYONE IN A 3 MILE RADIUS FOR SPORT.

If you go down Athens Athena’s path, all the options become ridiculously convoluted and passive aggressive and only sometimes useful to the situation at hand.

Apollo’s choices at the beginning being unfairly, disgustingly different from each other like “adopt them” “eat their liver then poison the water supply” “[vaguely appropriate verbal response but kinda sleazy]” “quote a Delphic maxim and / or vague prophecy and ascend through the roof (cost: €2,000)”.

hehe thinking about the whole “sons usurping their fathers” thing / prophecy and what if you made this an anticipated Thing that would happen eventually on Olympus that Zeus was chill about actually.

Awkward teen Apollo: (internally) haha, I wonder what being a King would be like!

Also awkward teen Athena: Father Apollo’s fantasising about patricide again!!!

Apollo: (horrified) NO! FATHER, I WASN’T-

Zeus: 👏👏🎊🎊 YES!! THAT’S MY BOY!! 🫵🫵 JUST LIKE HIS FATHER!! 💪💪🎉🎉 MY BOY I GO STRAIGHT TO “SLEEP” AT “4:00PM” ON A “TUESDAY” WITH NO SURROUNDING GUARDS, AS THE KIDS SAY,

Potentially consider writing that (from that one version) Athena, instead of cursing that one specific flute, cursed every single flute that would ever be made but the curse is just Apollo hates you for playing it now. Euterpe: (epic flute solo) Apollo: Wonderful! Truly, your skill is unparalleled for creating such a beautiful sound on such a DISTASTEFUL and UGLY instrument!
Euterpe: Apollo: Euterpe please why did you pick this weak tube you could have picked any other instrument to master and elevate to divine- Euterpe: dude can you chill literally once. come on man

if you wanted to focus more on the politics of Olympus. Because of ancient gender roles (VERY MUCH A STRETCH HERE) Athena is the Crown Prince (mainly overseeing war and combat (as well as more domestic politics??), virgin war goddess, generally seems believed to be not as sociable esp compared to Apollo??) and Apollo is the Crown Princess (more related to maintaining relations of states allied / looking to becomes allies / internal states, being personable and diplomatic etc. (from the whole thing with marrying princesses off to other city states.), many of the myths with his lovers arguably stem from political relations between cities!). (Athena and Apollo heir duo perhaps? Due to being children of Zeus, Zeus’ favourites, and very strongly associated with founding and running cities etc. throughout Ancient Greece!!)

Cursed one. Due to the tradition that once they came of age, boys would shave their head and dedicate their hair to Apollo as thanks for keeping them safe, where do you think would Apollo keep all this Hair? Would he have a designated room in his palace? The Hair Room™️? Does he give a house tour to Olympus magazines and go “this is my hair room, it’s the room of the hair (I feel too bad about throwing it out)”? Would the hair be horrifyingly tangled and the room tightly locked or would it be neatly sorted by colour? Which is worse

more cursed: Athena, because she is BORED, wants to make a tapestry out of this hair even if the quality is so so awful and lumpy from tying ends together. Apollo does NOT want this horror to be made, but Athena’s offer of unlimited and unrestricted access of her awesome library packed full of so many books is deeply, deeply tempting him.

less cursed idea: Athena coaxes Apollo to let her borrow (? She does not explain what she means by “borrow”) his hair to weave into her tapestry. He (EVENTUALLY) does at a VERY VERY high interest rate (not snitching on him visiting his kids). He charges for replacements (that’s his hair! not his fault you lost it or couldn’t be bothered to finish the tapestry!), no returns (terrified by “borrow”. ATHENA WHAT DID YOU MEAN) and prices switch between seasons (when he wants to grow his hair out).

what if Athena gifted her Chosen Ones / favourites / respected smart people with her woven clothes? She handmade Odysseus’ cloak. She knitted (?) Diomedes a little scarf. (In a modern version) she gifts her father a lightning-themed jumper or chiton. When she and Apollo really got associated with each other in many parts of Greece / were both solidified as the favourites™️, she made him another one of his cloaks he seemed to like a lot in Hellenistic times. basically just war-torn, battle-scarred soldiers proudly wearing knitted goods as a symbol of their cunning and fighting prowess!

Athena is very attached to her library and binds books very often to preserve original copies of texts she got centuries, sometimes millennia ago.

Once someone made a Theseus’s ship joke and she banned them from her library.

sometimes, in order to kick someone out / to reach high places / be spooky, Athena often turns into a huge owl beast like Wan Shi Tong from Avatar the Last Airbender. And screams

Apollo specifically commissions beautiful lamp shades that function as fancy hats for him and that project shapes on the room around him when he glows!

Athena only lets him read with her in her library during midnight sessions if he does this for her. Nightlight man.

in a modern setting, because of all the stray cats in temples, cats are now favoured by the gods. This varies from gods adopting them all, to scritching them when they visit, to begrudgingly coming to a truce in territory (and growing to love them. Toa Apollo looking at you.)

this ESPECIALLY goes for Athena and Athens’ cats btw she’s a cat lady and they all sit around her when she weaves.

Athena (piercing eyes) and Apollo (Phoebus) both have jarring glowing eyes but they’re jarring in very different ways.

someone interrupts them during a late-night research session and gets shocked. Out of their skin. You could say

Athena and Apollo, alongside discussing politics and forming cities, also bond over sewing, Athena being goddess of weaving and Apollo being a surgeon.

They share different stuff they know. Athena knowing how to hide stitches to make everything seem pretty and coherent and cool stuff that looks awesome. Apollo making knots that never ever ever unravel.

As the other half of Apollo’s high int/knowledge low wis, consider: Athena high wis low int/knowledge. She has actual critical thinking skills. Even better if she still has the complex she’s usually given.

Athena: you should be wary when you return to your lands. Do not underestimate the cruelty of a kingdom long abandoned. Lay low and establish allies before coming home.

some Greek King: Oh Goddess Athena, thank you for your sage advice. Could you tell me the nearest city I could visit freely for food and shelter?

Athena: No Never talk to me again

Apollo wears gold-rimmed round glasses to represent how he strains himself to see way into the future in a lot of detail / to see way across the world (ok I know this is not possible, being a god, but THE AESTHETIC)

Athena wears matching silver ones and complains about it alllll the time.
