On 1 February 1913, Leonora Cohen made history when she threw an iron bar at the Crown Jewels in protest at the Government. Becoming known as the 'Tower Suffragette', Leonora dedicated her life to fighting for women's suffrage and equality. Not only did she campaign for women's right to vote in 1918 and 1928, but incredibly she fought again in her late nineties for the passing of the Equal Pay Act in 1970. This gave men and women equal pay for equal work, something that she had been fighting for from the very beginning.

Discover Leonora Cohen's remarkable story in our film (http://bit.ly/LeonoraCohen) and find out how you can get involved in our programme of events marking the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act 1918 here: http://bit.ly/VotesandVoices

On 12 Jan 1618-19, the old Banqueting House is consumed by fire and Inigo Jones was hired to replace it.

The old Banqueting House was only completed in 1606 as a replacement of the Tudor banqueting house. As the popularity of the Jacobean court masques grew, so did the desire for a grander performance space. However, when King James I saw the finished building in 1606 he was disappointed. Around 12 years later, workers clearing up a masque accidently set fire to the oil-painted scenery and the Banqueting House was burnt to the ground. Inigo Jones was the architect of the moment, and was quickly hired to replace it. The fashionable Palladian building that he designed was completed to James I’s delight in 1922.

Today in 1618: Sir Walter Raleigh is executed.

Raleigh is best known as an explorer and a favourite courtier of Elizabeth I. He was knighted and appointed captain of the Queen's Guard in 1587. However, Raleigh’s secret marriage to one of the Queen’s maids-of-honour Elizabeth Throckmorton angered the queen and both were imprisoned in the Tower of London. When James I took the throne in 1603, Raleigh was far from a favourite, and, after being implicated in a plot against the King, found himself once more in the Tower – this time for 13 years, held in the Bloody Tower. He was released to lead an expedition to South America, but its failure led to his eventual arrest and death sentence.

Today in 1683: Princess Anne, the future Queen Anne, marries George, Prince of Denmark.

The marriage took place in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace. Although it was an arranged marriage for political allegiances, the couple were happy and committed to each other throughout their marriage, despite suffering hardships over the loss of children.

This portrait of Queen Anne by Antonio Verrio forms the centrepiece of his painted ceiling in the Queen’s Drawing Room at Hampton Court Palace, 1703-05. Queen Anne is depicted as Justice, with scales in one hand and a sword in the other.

Today in 1554: Mary I and Philip II of Spain are married in Winchester Cathedral.

A portrait of Philip by Titian had been sent to Mary in advance of the marriage. Their wedding took place just two days after meeting and the couple honeymooned at Hampton Court Palace. An Act of Marriage was drawn up to ensure the joint authority of the husband and wife. Mary was 38 when she married and Philip was 11 years her junior.
