A Taxonomythic Bestiary

For a project that involved the contemporization of mythology, I dealt with the tradition of naming newly discovered species after mythological creatures. Visually, I focused on scientific illustration, bestiaries, and pterosaur fossils. Although I wanted to evoke some scientific illustration-like imagery, the purpose was not so much scientific accuracy as it was the feeling of mystery and magnificence. There’s a mythical quality that surrounds prehistoric animals, an unknowability that lends their fossils to interpretation and reinterpretation.

Keeping in mind that I took a lot of artistic liberties with these skeletons, the pterosaurs I referred to are:

1. Azdarcho lancicollis - named after the Uzbek word for dragon 2. Quetzalcoatlus northropi - named after the Mesoamerican god Quetzalcoatl 3. Samrukia nessori - named after the samruk/simurgh
