Victoria Nguyen, Untitled, from the series Variations, 2018-19.
“Variations is a psychological self-portrait project about my experiences of being both the giver and receiver of the gaze. Modeling after Hans Bellmer’s Variations on the Montage of an Articulated Minor, I apply the Surrealist ideas of fragmentation and fetishism by using my own body to address issues that arise in the gaze. From shaping myself into a lifeless mannequin to rearranging my body parts into a disjointed mass, my body takes on varying forms, ridding itself of my “self-ness” in order to become a compliant—yet disruptive—object of study and observation.”
