WRITERS! Where are you?

I'm looking for writers on here who are working on their own original stories.

Fan content gets a lot more love than original fiction does around here, so promote away, shamelessly. Post links if you've got 'em

Personally I mostly read Sci-Fi and Fantasy but this is a free for all.

Thank you for asking! These are whump books in fantasy and modern genres. My writing focuses on abuse and the emotional impact it has on the victim, written as a protagonist who fights against all odds to overcome their abuser.

Dance of Death <fantasy riches-to-rags book>

When a young noble finds out that her friends are being legally abused, she sees no choice but to take a political stand against it, using humorous comments that cleverly discredit her opposition. But she has no idea how far her enemies will go to crush her spirit.

Back to the Dregs <Used-as-bait novella>

A young detective thought he'd left his problems in his past, but when he's kidnapped as bait for his gangster brother, he has to find a way to escape. Before they figure out his brother hates him.

The Ghost of Seattle <Living Weapon Book>

In post-apocalyptic Seattle, a boy becomes a living weapon for his abusive father. When he takes his life into his own hands and joins another gang, he believes he's now fighting for people that won't use him. But he is wrong.

Information on The Kill-Touch <novella coming soon>

(this one is, wierdly, fantasy AND sci-fi)

A young telekinetic is suddenly forced to provide for her younger brother when her parents are killed for their magical powers. But when she's kidnapped by scientifically advanced researchers to be experimented on, she has to hide the extent of what she can do if she wants to escape back to her brother.

Fandom Medical Archive: Year 1

Okay Folks! As requested- I did it!

I compiled and vaguely organized the first year of all my original posts, medical reviews, and asks into one easy-to-search google doc. It is 128 pages and nearly 60,000 words. This blog is significantly bigger than even I knew, so I'll be going year-by-year and hoping to get the entire blog onto 9 docs.

This took some time to put together, so if you use it and want to say thanks, my paypal is below the cut. Donations will be used to purchase reference materials for the blog and blaze cool posts!

This one is about 40,000 words and formatted a little differently.

How do you craft something that's intended to be thoroughly unenjoyable? That people will understand the meaning behind and see the quality of despite or maybe even because of their dislike?

this WIP probably won't see the light of day for a while but I want to talk about the process. this is new for me.

I've mentioned before, how different it felt to write a tragedy for the first time.

but lemme tell ya that's also entirely different from "I want people to feel icky while reading this."

'cause, thing about tragedy is it can still be cathartic, that woe can still be enjoyed. it's an indulgence.

that's not this.

this is me intentionally trying to immerse my readers in unpleasantness and invoke extreme discomfort within them without grossing them out and all while still having it be clear that the story is meant to disturb; all the perturbing stuff serves a message that I'm trying to impart to the readers.

and that's such a delicate balance that I don't even completely understand yet.

a well-crafted tragedy should still feel fulfilling.

how do I make people feel like they're being violated by the manuscript but still have them come out of it with the sense that they've gained something from the experience?

Hmmmm... I've definitely read a lot of stories that were incredibly tragic, where every character involved felt pain and by the end there was no hope for the situation. But I think these stories are the sort that can be cathartic, as you said, so they're probably not what you're looking for. But there have also been a few times that I read stories that were disturbing, that I didn't quite enjoy, but I could still appreciate the quality of the writing. I don't remember the details of these stories, but I think they were probably written from the perspectives of truly irredeemable characters, characters who hurt others in horrific ways and completely and utterly fail to see what is wrong with their actions, even reveling in the pain they cause.

I often find catharsis in the perspectives of the characters who are hurt, the ones who are victimized.

But reading the POV of the unrepentant aggressor, when written in a certain way, is one of few things that can make my skin crawl.

writing quiet characters

He looked at him. He looked at him in a different way. Blinked. He tilted his head. He looked at him sideways. Under his lashes. In a unique kind of tilt. In a violent sort of way. He stared at him in a kind of way you haven’t read about before. He sighed. He looked away. He looked at a different away. He stared. Considered. Pondered. He was silent but it was interesting, somehow. It was a questioning sort of silence. Puzzled. He was still. He went even more still. He was barely breathing. He was dead with anticipation. He tensed. He relaxed minutely. The seconds ticked by, silently. He waited. He narrowed his eyes. His eyes widened. He followed you with them. His eyes. He did something that was nothing but filled the required beat of a line. He

You know, I’ve never personally been lifted from the ground by my neck to be strangled, but uh, is there a reason y’all never like….. kick the person holding you? Like characters straight up just dangle there and gasp, like you have legs! Use them you stupid bitches!

Actually, the physics involved with that is kinda weird. The thought, oh shit, can’t breathe, usually overpowers the rational part of the mind that can calmly assess the threat and comes up with effective solutions.

But that’s only the first obstacle. The second is leverage. I don’t know about you, but I hate stomach crunches. Thing is, why you’re being gripped by the neck, the only way you can get your feet up on your attacker is to move using muscles in your neck and spine. There’s not really any other source of leverage you can draw from like this.

It’s not an easy feat. It takes conscious thought, thoughts that keep getting drowned out by the oh shit, can’t breathe, instinct.

And then

in order to kick effectively, you’ll need some kind of leverage. Putting your back against a wall would be the most effective tactic, but a person being held like that literally has no choice in this regard.

The next best tactic would be to lift your legs as high as your opponent’s shoulder and use the combined leverage to try and break their grip on your throat. Except:

  1. If they’re lifting you up off the ground by the neck, they’ll probably not have their grip broken by human force.
  2. Your neck bones are fairly fragile, you could end up paralyzing yourself making the attempt.

“Just kick them” doesn’t work in this situation because you’re off the ground. An ordinary kick relies on manipulating leverage and muscle from one leg on the ground and another exerting force on the target.

Trying to fight back without a good source of leverage is like trying to beat them to death with a pool noodle.

And that’s assuming you can think of any of this at all.

This was actually very informative and I revoke my earlier snappish words, thank you
