oh yes, black backed jackal's specially are very teritorrial and opportunistic, though they are way more group oriented and sociable than mongooses, who do live in a community but are 100% autonomous. idk about flighty, have you seen a mongoose fighting a snake? they're vicious af. but they'd rather work around the situation to avoid spending unecessary energy, it's more of a solving things in a smart way than to fight head on, imo.
