Super Hero Happy Meal

In the Similar Universe of SUPERBOY BIG GULP:

The writing, as they say, had been on the wall. And, it had been there for a while.

Only when many of their friends -- Uncle Sam and the FREEDOM FIGHTERS, good ol' Robotman and his unfortunate DOOM PATROL, and, although no one really cared, AZRAEL -- received pink slips notifying them their series were to be cancelled before the summer, did Batman begin to see the common thread that wove all these events together:

The THREE.

Batman found clues that went even farther back, clues which revealed the Hand of The Three in their lives, and he could have gone even farther back, still.  But he stopped himself from doing so, for even he couldn't get past what happened last summer:

WONDER WOMAN's world had been turned on its head. Poor Diana still didn't know if she was coming or going, and that she felt like she was wearing someone else's clothes all the time made matters even worse. Because Batman, the World's Greatest Detective, realized:

Wonder Woman's new costume, the one she began inexplicably wearing just over one year ago, had happened because of The THREE.

LOL!

That is funny as fuck!  Aaaaannnd, it's just one angry (and rather famous -- or, infamous, even) fan's reaction to this week's shocking news of a September shake-up at DC Comics.  We're not gonna say who said it, but here's a hint:

Listen for it.

Meantime, Sherm and I will be back on the comicsblog shortly with absolutely EVERYTHING about DC's huge news: from their brand-new line and the creators involved, to the greater implications of their ballsy move, and, most importantly, what's at stake for the publisher-- and the comic book industry at large.

So stick around, peeps: more SUPERHERO HAPPY MEAL in a matter of mere minutes! (Unless we're on Galactus time; then minutes tend to be a bit longer...)

Batman: Hush Unwrapped is the new -- and unprecedented -- Deluxe Hardcover Edition of the now-classic Batman epic, "Hush", by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee.   Originally, the "Hush" storyline ran from Batman Issue #608 through Batman #619 (2002-2003), and introduced the formidable Bat-nemesis whose name it bears.  Aside from Hush himself, the story also starred nearly every major Bat-ally and villain during its near year-long run.

Unwrapped features the art of comics superstar and DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee -- not something unusual at all.  But what is unusual and different is that this new edition will see Lee's art published in its pencil form for the first time ever.  That means no colors, no finishes, no nothing -- other than black-and-white lettering (an essential storytelling, natch) and Lee's initial scribbles.

It's an interesting twist on republishing the old, and Hush: Unwrapped drops from DC Comics in late June, 2011. More at DC Comics HERE and on Amazon.com HERE.

If I'm rememberin' right, DC Comics quickly recalled the 'Ass Variant' cover of All-Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder Issue #12.  I guess Frank Miller didn't like the subtle message someone was sending him.

Issue #12's Ass Variant is almost impossible to find, even for deep-pocket die-hard collectors. But if I was a betting man -- and Sherm a bettin' burger -- I'd say it's very possible there'll be another 'Ass Variant' sometime in our near future.

Frank Miller and Jim Lee's continuation of All-Star Batman is supposed to drop this very month, under the new title of Dark Knight: Boy Wonder.  At least, that's what DC announced at last year's Wonder Con, way back in April 2010.

Even Lee himself was quite confident a year ago we'd see a Miller Batman back on the spinner racks come, oh, right about NOW:

The February, 2011 start date was [chosen] to ensure that Dark Knight: Boy Wonder would ship regularly and on time. -- Jim Lee, DC Comics Co-Publisher and series artist, April 02, 2010 [via]

But now that NOW is here, it's not Miller but frabjous [sorry, we just watched Alice in Wonderland] artist David Finch who has his own Dark Knight titled series.

Call me an ass, but color me doubtful.

Cover to Legion of The Undead featuring a downright zombified Superman, with art by Jim Lee.

Sherm's favorite holiday is Halloween and I haveta say, it's always been mine, too. Sad to see it gone for another year, but we had a lotta fun.  The Walking Dead scored big as AMC's top-rated show in the channels history, Shermie got to have his walk-on (more like a 'tossed-on') bit in a small production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and only two people and a raccoon named Palin drowned in this year's Halloween Annual Bobbing for Apples Contest here in good ol' Springfield, Oregon, our hometown for now.
We're gonna carry on with the Halloween spirit here on the comicsblog  thru tomorrow, since we never had a chance to post our list of the Top 10 Halloween Heroes, so that's coming up for sure. Plus more fun, larfs, off-color fluff, and all the other cool stuff that's become synonymous world-wide with a Super Hero Happy Meal.

If you're one of the few folks who has yet to view the Awesome of Sony's six-minute DC Universe Online trailer, don't read another word until you check that bad boy out on our 31 July blog - here. Because, what The 'Meal's got for ya here isn't exactly that -- although it is just as fascinating.

Which is good, because fascinating is what any follow-up would have to be. Jim Lee (DC Comics' co-publisher) meets his mandate expertly by interviewing the trailer's creator, Blur Studio's Tim Miller, and the result is one very cool DC Universe Online Director's Cut.

While Lee and Miller don't address too much of the critical frenzy that's filled fanboy forums since the MMORPG's trailer first hit, the Director's Cut is filled with explanations of all the tantalizing Easter Eggs you didn't even know you missed. Enjoy!

The 'Hard-Traveling Heroes' themselves: Green Lantern & Green Arrow by Jim Lee [via]

DID YOU KNOW...?

'Hard-Traveling' was the descriptive phrase coined by DC Comics' Denny O'Neill and Neal Adams to describe Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Black Canary, and former Guardian Appa Ali Apsa during a time period when they traveled across the country trying to find the "real" America. That time period was roughly 1970-1972, when Green Lantern (Vol2) became Green Lantern/Green Arrow, and encompassed all of just 13 issues, from GL/GA #76 thru GL/GA #89, Neal Adams' final issue.
If you weren't aware, allow the The 'Meal to tell ya that O'Neill & Adams classic run on Green Lantern / Green Arrow remains one of the most seminal and significant in comics grand history. In many ways, those 13 'Hard-Traveling' issues they created were the Watchmen of their day, if not from style then most certainly from content. Check out the trade if you want a great read, it'll make you think. Hard.

The look that WONDER WOMAN will be sporting once the DC UNIVERSE ONLINE MMORPG goes live is no longer in doubt, and fans who worried themselves sick that Diana might not survive Lee's next fashion challenge can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Jim Lee's concept art for the Amazing Amazon got posted to the internets while most of us were eating our dinner -- and despite that sneakiness, somebody noticed. Then, the word got out. And the next thing you know, the stuff could be up at your local Super Hero Happy Meal.

I'll be damned; it is up!   Looks like Lee sneaked his sneaky self into my office and got his blog on.  (I'd normally have blamed Sherman, but he's out taping a guest spot on GLEE.)

Well...Not a problem, Mr. Lee. The lady's looking pretty good tonight. And even if you had screwed her up again, I'll always love what you did in The Karate Kid.

Jim Lee draws PARALLAX, a manifestation of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum and the sentient embodiment of fear. Originally the name that Hal Jordan took following his absorption of the energy in the Central Power Battery of Oa during Emerald Twilight, Parallax was later retconned to be the cause of both Jordan's insanity and the Yellow Impurity within the Green Lantern Ring.

Parallax, in one CGI-ed form or another, will also be the main antagonist of the Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern movie that opens next summer! Fun, yet scary.
