Wonder Woman's place among the titles topping our DC Comics Friday Forecast for July 2011 was assured by a lot more than just Alex Garner's wicked-cool cover on Issue #613. (Although, were the entire 32 pages inside the comic completely blank, Garner's art would probably still get Diana Prince a place on our list!)

New Wonder Woman's journey towards discovering her True Self was initially intended to wrap-up with June's issue, but 'The Odyssey' was even more epic than its creator, J. Michael Straczynski, had planned. The storyline extends an additional TWO issues, and July tackles the first of those. Here's what happens:

WONDER WOMAN #613 Written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI and PHIL HESTER Art by DON KRAMER and WAYNE FAUCHER Cover by JOSHUA MIDDLETON 1:10 Variant cover by ALEX GARNER The mega-opus “Odyssey” proved too big, it needed two extra issues to tell J. Michael Straczynski and Phil Hester’s full story! It’s classic Wonder Woman versus the new one! Even if she wins, she loses! On sale JULY 27 | 32 pgs | $2.99

  • SMASH! by artist Chris Weston (for Marvel Comics)

Weston is writing and pencilling Marvel’s upcoming one-shot, The Twelve: Spearhead, a ‘prequel’ to his and writer J. Michael Straczynski’s yet-to-conclude 2007 maxi-series, The Twelve.

Spearhead, which is not being written by JMS,  follows The Phantom Reporter’s activities as a war correspondent covering the super-hero contribution to the Invasion of Europe, and will guest-star Captain America and the Invaders.

The Twelve: Spearhead Issue #1 will be 40-pages, features cover art by Paolo Rivera, and is due sometime in March 2011. In his recent interview with MTV, JMS said he’s completed the final issues of The Twelve, and the series is expected to finally finish its delayed run this summer, likely in trade paperback / graphic novel format.

A Super Hero Happy Meal Must-Have Comics Magazine

G. Willow Wilson (Air) and Leandro Oliveira provide a “Grounded” interlude in October’s SUPERMAN #704. Wilson's story details a visit Lois Lane makes to her college town in anticipation of Superman’s arrival. When she runs into an old boyfriend and sees the nice, normal family he has, Lois is can’t help but examine the choices she made and wonder if they were the correct ones.

Oooooooo!!! Lois having second thoughts. Sounds like a drama-o-rama. We of The 'Meal love us some superhero seriousness, and this ish should be packed with plenty of it. This month, JMS takes a time-out, but John Cassaday remains the cover guy on Superman Issue #704  [via]

Um, is it Wednesday still?

Just as I'd sat down at my laptop all prepared to post this week's Wednesday Special - on Wednesday, when it belongs - well, the next thing I knew, I woke up in a dark alley somewhere else wearing another dude's clothes -- and I had no idea who the heck I was! Then, I had to fight off some kid-gang calling themselves Los Golosinas since apparently my pockets, socks, and underwear were stuffed full of Chiclets and yo-yos.

That's all I remember. The way I figure it, I was (a) drunk (b) got Punk'd (c) or some joker got a wild hair or maybe a movie deal and ret-conned my life. They're all equally plausible, but let me just say this:  J. Michael Straczynski, you're on my List, bud. On. My List.

... Without further ado or commentary, Super Hero Happy Meal's WEDNESDAY Top 10 Comics SPECIAL for the week of July 21st, 2010!
