Voltron Legendary Defender & Avatar series connected?
Hi folks Alex here and I thought for this weeks post I’d talk about the connection between Voltron Legendary Defender and the Avatar series.
As we know this incarnation of Voltron uses the same artist and producer as the Avatar series both Legend of Korra and The last Airbender/Legend of Aang both are very creative and go into more depth and use interesting settings and feels. After looking over a few episodes of Legendary defender both recent and old my theories that I posted on this blog indicate a connection between the two series and show the possibilities of a crossover between the two franchises. The key of this is the theory of the multiverse and as mentioned in The legend begins the sages of Altea have long theorised that there are many realms stacked against each other such as the realm with the dark quintessence creatures. But who's to say that the Avatars reality isn't one of them, as we know in the Avatar universe there are two worlds the physical and spiritual world and the Avatar is the bridge between the two worlds. The key to the similarities is in the characters and the events such as the dark creature from the rift on the Galra home world that the original Paladins of Voltron destroyed.
I couldn't help but see a similarity between that creature and the dark spirits from the spirit world during book 2 of Legend of Korra
Both creatures can't be touched physically and possess a similar property of dark quintessence. What if when Zarkon deceived the paladins into enlarging the rift so he could save his wife the creature that corrupted them was a dark spirit from the spirit world indicating the rift lead to that particular universe.
Another connection would be between the Avatar and Voltron itself, as we know the Avatar can master all four elements including spirit bending thanks to Ravva the spirit of light and Voltron is comprised of five lions that represent its own elements fire, water, earth, forest and the sky. Then theres the fact that in order to form Voltron the spirit of both the Paladins and the Lions must unite as one just as the Avatar state which connects to past lives and become one with the light spirit itself.
In terms of the characters as I said in a previous post there are some incarnations of certain characters such as Kuviera and the Altea general Hira from the mirrorverse who have the same voice and personality wanting to achieve a powerful empire such as Hira and her Alteans taking the free will of others or Kuvira building a giant mecha suit to unite an empire showing that they are reflections of the other in the multiverse.
Another connection would be between Ty-lee and Ezor. Ezor’s personality is that she’s and I quote “the friendliest of Lotors generals” as Ty-lee is the friendliest of Azulas minions but at the same time have a determination to complete their mission as was shown at the boiling rock and when Ezor was fighting Kieth.
Speaking of Kieth, as we know in season 3 he is now the leader of Voltron and is still trying to figure out how to be a good leader both in himself and under Shiro’s guidance (even if he is a clone but until I see season four I remain skeptical) this shows something he has in common with Korra. As we know when Kieth was a Paladin he was hot headed, determined to succeed and sometimes aggressive but this was due to him questioning his humanity after learning about his Galra heritage and over the seasons he's begun to care and take on new responsibilities as leader and as a Paladin. This is something Korra shares as she couldn't wait to be the Avatar but due to her being so Naive it lead to some imbalances no matter how hard she tries to bring balance but after her confrontation with both UnaVattu and Zaheer she's matured into a compassionate person who is willing to put others before herself such as the resurrected Air nation and being able to be compassionate to others even Kuvira.
Just as Kieth was learning to chose his battles and making tough choices showing that the two have more in common than they might think and they both had friends to guide them on their path be it bringing balance or being a leader.
Both these series are very in depth about their characters, history, interactions and elements that link them together intertwining their fate. Plus I think a crossover between them be it fan or official would show the true connection between the series and if dreamworks, netflix and Nickolodeon manage to negotiate a crossover I’d certainly pay to see it.
I hope that we see more of these connections come season four of Voltron Legendary Defender and who knows maybe even more so, I’m considering doing a crossover fan comic of my own at some point just need to finish other projects and get the right timing and inspiration.
